Apparently the Central Valley is either Abnormally Dry or in Moderate Drought. Ask the residents. No. And as expected those of us in the tiny kidney bean of red Extreme Drought are even more incredulous. Golfing this morning one sand trap was a lake and one fairway was partially under water. The region in red has already seen 2x normal rainfall and is expecting another half years' worth of precipitation over the next 36 hours. Power is not relinquished easily.
Well the white area is extending slowly downward towards you.

I didn't notice any but I worked all day. My favorite local Mexican restaurant closed and is owned by a small Colorado chain. They made the TV news. Last time they had a strike nothing happened, so I guess we don't have a large amount of illegals here and Americans still work here.

The problem is the first few trillion will go into a black hole of past mistakes and present corruption. Remember "shovel ready?" The City of Oxnard got a chunk of money to back fill corrupt waste treatment plant cost overruns that were incurred in 2006 years before the so called stimulus.
There is good news. The roads are not going to need expanding near as much as expected as automation takes hold.
I haven't heard of anyone having a nanny here, grandparents fill in. Maids same but we do have house cleaning services. Some gardeners but mostly lawn mowing by independents. I use a lawn guy and I do the rest. When was the last time you saw a white roofing crew? Rarely do you see a Mexican crew here. You do see them on large road projects and I think they travel mostly. Farm work here is dominated by machines.

One unusually wet year doesn't mark the end of the drought, just a welcome respite from it. Let's see what next winter brings first.

I think the drought monitor has a component which measures subsoil moisture. I don't know how far below ground it measures or how the measurement is weighted. But I know that corn plant root systems can exceed 5 feet. It would be interesting to know how much and how far the recent deluges have permeated the surface ( and at what depth the drought monitor measures it).
