Thomas Fire Time Lapse
A good camera makes even klutzes into cinematographers.
I was looking at some of the burning homes pix on latimes.com and noticed that some of the houses had tile roofs and clear space around them, yet were burning from the inside out.
It sort of makes me wonder if there isn't something else that should have been done in the design of the houses - something that could have protected them a bit better.
Liz, Depends. If remote and difficult to fight and no structures or people are at risk, they let'em burn till the rains or snow puts them out. In Kali there is always a fire burning somewhere.
Sm_LL, The KaliFire has documents discussing wildfire resistant construction. I chased it down a week ago or so. Wood fascias and other exterior woods are a problem. Attic vent screens need to resist wind blown embers. The construction behind the vents need to be fire resistant. Windows and window coverings are also a hazard. My guess is that insurance companies will force codes to become more strict about fire resistance. We got dropped by USAA for our Donner cabin. AAA said no problem, except we had to do all our insurance with them.
Also forgot to mention defensable space, moving all exterior burnables away from the house, moving all furniture away from windows, landscaping with fire resistant plants and remove trees near the house. We discovered our deer resistant rosemary is green gasoline.
Okay. I envision a tungsten chicken wire mesh with a 4” cell as a support for a loose weave of Nomex and Kevlar. I figure about $3/sf so a blanket for a house will be $7-9k typically. The insurance savings should see a ROI of a dozen years or so for at risk homes.

ReplyDeleteAssuming it's effective, you would need an hour or so to put that over the house. Some of these fires come up pretty fast.
I know of no fires even these where there wasn’t an hour between OMG we need to do something and the fire arriving.
