Tarnished Golden State

California leads the nation once again in a statistic no state wants to boast about.
When the cost of living is factored in, the Golden State has the highest poverty rate in the country. More than 20 percent of its residents struggle to make ends meet, according to recently released Census figures. That’s nearly 8 million people.
Unfortunately for Californians, this year’s poverty numbers are not an aberration. The Census began releasing state-by-state results for its “supplemental poverty measure” in 2011, in an attempt to improve upon the outdated and heavily criticized official poverty statistics.

To think we used to be able to join the rifle team as an elective in high school.

Rifle team like golf team and ski team were the most awesome electives. Always last period and as a senior the period before was study hall. Morning science classes, Lunch, then English Lit and bam! Shooting, skiing or golfing. For bonus points be on the newspaper and have "deadlines."

Okay. I admit it. You knew me as -that kid- in HS and hated me for it. Truth is it wasn't ski team but swim team. More work and in New England a winter sport. One time in college in Boston it was single digits and winter break but practice continued. Pool heat was off. After 7000 yards we would dress in t-shirts and leave our long hair wet. Spikes, waves, mohawks, every kind of hairdo that would freeze in seconds. T-shirts throwing off clouds of condensation in single degree temps headed to the late cafeteria held open for athletes. Good times.

What well regulated militia does did an't of the shooters belong to?

The "rifle squad" at my HS were a bunch of girls twirling 2 X 4's while the marching band played.

However, they did offer a gun safety course for those taking shop, which basically was an afternoon shooting skeet. Pretty much every kid I grew up with started hunting in their pre-teens. I was one weirdo "brain", so I never hunted - though I did target practice with my grandfather and shot at the annual Turkey Shoot a couple of times.

I did have a friend who on the first day of hunting season was so excited that he managed to bag his Mom's China cabinet.

I believe the Florida shooter was JROTC.

Then you could have been part of a well regulated militia.
The pre dead children are shouting no more guns.

Lawyerliz said...

Are they sorry? Did.he act out?

Hunting deer is necessary because we are the only top predator left. Or reintroduce wolves. Has all kinds of good ecological effects. Or pumas or mountain lions.

Lawyerliz said...

They only eat one human at a time.

We co exist with alligators. The suburbanites reluctantly co exist with bears.

Having grown up where guns were common, every kid hunted, and mass shootings were rare (and hunting accidents common), I have knowledge of the vast chasm in the reality of guns between rural and urban settings.

But, in NEITHER setting do I see the efficacy or benefit of assault rifles, massive magazine clips, or bump stocks in civilian hands.

So you could have been part of a well regulated militia. My son was a band. Kid, and then he was a Ranger. I didn't go ballistic because there weren't any wars at the time, and it didn't seem there were gonna be any at the time. Doesn't seem to me the recent wars defended any American s from anything.

A friend of my son's hunter wild boares, which were delicious and a pest. The space center tries to keep them down. They declared An open season on pythons a few years ago and it was a miserable failure with totally inept hunters

I have a couple of guns but they don't interest me much. Guns like any toy of interest become a Horse Power game as to how powerful and how fast they are. Insane people will use what ever method they can get to do evil to others. Guns are to easy to get and once again our government has failed us. Same excuse not enough money when really it is their priorities are messed up. IMO

You are rich even if you are poor in Kali. They need to stop the BS and deal with importing poverty. It is big business to keep people poor and stupid.

Lawyerliz said...

Why don't we ask the children, they are the ones with some thing at stake. No being shot without representation

Lawyerliz said...

Warn the Mexicans their children may be shot. Mexicans love their children

I was like 11 when I fired a machine gun set to a three burst. Very heavy adult supervision. Have the shooting merit badge and some sort of marksman add on. My brother and I broke in his 9mm in Venice in November with 200 rounds of full grain. Fun and challenging.

We don’t need to get rid of guns. We need to help crazies.

Rob Dawg said...

Mexicans live with the danger of their kids being shot. They address it by arming the good guys.

LBD said...

Parents should take their kids out of any dangerous situation. Is still suggest vouchers including private schools. Government is not getting the job done and push back is non existence. Another candle and flower vigil isn't going to work.IMO

You can't get rid of crazies, so . . .

Lawyerliz said...

No it won't. Something else will.

I hope that all remember that there is no gates preventing folks from leaving or coming to Kalipornikateya.
Don't come if you haven't graduated from high school. Don't come if you are offered less than 150,000 per. Even then, you will only rent not buy. Kali is a rich state with a YUge agriculture industry. Ag does not pay. Ag needs lots of messicans to do the hard work.
Even 20 some years ago my wife had lab techs who had to commute to the Stanford hospital from Los Banos.
There is a lot of open space cheap land in the Reno area. Reno is close to massive recreational areas. Reno just needs an upgrade to educating the population that tech industry wants. Water could be a problem with increased development. They could just steal it from the alfafa farmers in Fallon. The alfalfa is exported to feed cattle in Kali.

Liz, Laughed at you mentioning reinto of predators to control the over population of deer/wild hogs. Here in Kali, I am pushing for the reintroduction of the Grizzly Bear. They were lowland bears and kept the black bear population down. With enough Grizzly Bears we could keep the human population down too.
