The gradius web server is having trouble with the public network interface, an admin is checking it out right now at the data center. If it is found to be a web server issue and not networking hardware, the server hardware will be replaced. Please check back for updates.

I continue to recuse myself from speculation.
Casey's [soon to be old-] hosting guy here -- the dontdoshit.com guy. Looks like it's just a networking or web server issue.
Dreamhost almost never had these outages three years ago. I guess they're going through growing pains.
In any case, Casey was making arrangements to move to another server (not controlled by me) on Friday. So, depending on what choice he makes, things can potentially get better.
For the record, when he moves servers, the comments regarding him not letting posts through have to do with the fact that when he rotates his DNS entry, he doesn't tell the old DNS server to point to the new servers and then also setup new DNS servers to have the new entries. He generally just changes the DNS servers and waits for the stuff to propagate. When that happens, people who post comments to his site sometimes get redirected to the old server and the comments don't get posted because they weren't captured in the database snapshot.
Of course, the other solution would be to have the old site and the new site [during the transition] use the same database; however, the way it works with these hosting providers is that the databases come with the actual hosting. Therefore, when you move a site, you have to move the database as well.
Anyway, I'm having doubts about recommending Dreamhost to anyone these days. Anyone care to suggest an alternative with as many features?

I've avoided shorting the HBs as I think the game was rigged. I am changing very recently to the game definety WAS rigged but MAY not be rigged anymore. There's just so long you can hold onto control. The ^HGX with a few exceptions should be 30% below current levels. In the usual wierd way WY is down and the rest generally up. WY owns "forests." Forests should be good things to own but lately they've tracked unrelated to the rest of the ^HGX. There's enough stuff to invest in such that if your worldview and analysis don't work don't bother. I haven't developed a working combined set of both so I invest elsewhere. I'm still buying $20k funny money shares tonight in NEW on the dead cat bounce.

ITB and XHB are both ETFs based on the homebuilder indicies (DJ and S&P) Not quite the ^HGX but the correllation looks decently high to me, lots of basis risk in a hedge, but if you just want something to encompass the industry any should work decently well (95% and 96% correllation on daily moves for the past year (the ETFs are new instruments).
Don't forget the duct tape!

The problem with the site is that Casey's site got hosted on a server shared with other people. Turns out another site that was being co-hosted with Casey had a huge surge of traffic at the same time, so the entire server become overwhelmed. They moved his server to another location -- now, the DNS has to update.
He couldn't create a backup because the server was unresponsive under the heavy load and no one could even access the file system. There's some other site that's also hosted on Casey's server that gets 10-15x the bandwidth he does.
Doesn't have anything to do with Casey and has everything to do with Dreamhost and how they allocate resources.
Finally, I thought I'd point something out -- the TV broadcast made no references to his web site, I believe. There wasn't a resulting traffic spike.
He managed to find a new host, so there's some movement going on there, but things should be back to normal eventually.
It is all about him not paying for the things he consumes. There's nothing wrong with his site that paying his own way wouldn't cure.
Correction on last post -- Oops, 10-15x the traffic he does.

If Casey gives me permission, I'll post some site analytics for people who're curious. He didn't make enough of a dent in traffic that a $10-$20 hosting plan couldn't cover.
His site, for whatever reason, consumes a lot of CPU. I never really looked into specifically why his site consumed so much CPU. I guess I can set up a dummy version of his site for tinkering later to see what the real problem was.
Casey will, of course, spend all his time trying to fix his blog rather than what really matters... like getting out of foreclosure... or getting a job... or paying his bills... or acting like a man...

IRVINE, California: Subprime lender New Century Financial Corp. said Thursday it has stopped accepting all new loan applications as it struggles to obtain financing amid market speculation that the company could file for bankruptcy.
In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, New Century said it was only able to fund some of its loans this week, and its capacity to fund new loans has been "substantially limited" due to problems obtaining financing from lenders.
Aside from deteriorating credit quality, the nation's second-largest subprime lender faces investor lawsuits and an investigation by federal prosecutors into trading in the company's stock.
New Century said Thursday it is in "discussions with lenders and other third parties regarding a refinancing and other alternatives to obtain additional liquidity," adding that "no assurance can be given that any of these discussions will be successful."
One of the company's lenders extended $265 million (€201.5 million) in financing secured by New Century's REIT mortgage loan portfolio and certain residual assets. Proceeds will be used to refinance or satisfy some of the company's existing obligations.
The unnamed lender also provided financing to refinance the rest of the company's balance of $710 million (€540 million) in mortgage loans, which are currently financed through another lending facility.
A New Century director, David Einhorn, resigned from the company's board Wednesday night. Einhorn is a principal at hedge fund Greenlight Capital LLC, which owns more than 6 percent of New Century's stock.
The company has become the poster child for the problems of the subprime mortgage industry, which lends money to people with bad credit. Amid a slowdown in housing markets nationwide, the subprime industry has come under the microscope in the past month.
Shares of New Century plummeted $1.29, or 25 percent, to close at $3.87 on the New York Stock Exchange, and slipped 19 cents, or 5 percent, to $3.68 in aftermarket activity. The stock hit a new 52-week low of $3.37 during intraday trading.

Hey all -- been up to my ass in alligators recently but I wanted to say a quick "hi" and also to report that Casey's "fame" has spread even to the hallowed halls of geekness -- the "Joel on Software" boards.
Check out this thread, wherein some poor schmuck is bewailing his financial woes. IAFF & Casey get mentioned about 1/3 of the way down.
Roughly using the federal sentencing guidelines, I came out with about three years as the minimum recommended sentence for a financial crime where the total proceeds to the defendant (cash in hand) were under $1M. I say roughly, because aggravating circumstances add "bonus" points to the level of the offense and increase the recommended sentence. I didn't go through the whole thing and do all of those.
I know a little about the realities of the criminal justice system... Penalties I've seen doled out are about 10 years for serious drug offenses like manufacturing methamphetamine, or 20 years for committing a rape. (These are for jury convictions, not cases that plead out.) I offer no commentary as to whether the amount of jail time in either case is too low or high, or how they compare to what Casey has done, but instead, place them in the open as other examples of criminal conduct, and leave any comparison and conclusion up to the reader.
Casey will definitely have a problem getting the two to three point reduction for "acceptance of responsibility" under the federal guidelines. Acceptance of responsibility is as foreign a concept to Serin as a work ethic is.

I just went back and read some of Casey's 2006 comments. Back then people were offering constructive advice for him to take. Maybe a quarter to a half of the posts were first time posters who didn't know his whole story. Now everyone knows what a fraud he is and just heaps the hate on him.

I just watched the TV sement. Snowflake really doesn't look good. It could just be the TV lights combined with the white shirt (clearly not his color) or it could be that he's not bearing up as well as it seems on IAFF.
