Science in 61 Seconds

Now you know why economics is not a science.

And speaking of things "not science." I've started backing out of some positions as much to lock in profits as to avoid some potential "air pockets" in the next 8 weeks.

Something to keep in mind is that for many stocks the current yields and profits do indeed look toppy but only if you are buying now. If you bought last year or the year before or especially 7000 Dow points ago then those puny yields are actually quite juicy.

AT&T is $35 yielding 5%. Was $25 for a long time.

Intel $25 yielding 3.6% Was low teens.

People may not be buying at these levels but there is strong incentive to stay put.

October FOMC Meeting Minutes Show Reduction In Fed Bond Buying Likely In ‘Coming Months’

I cannot fathom this happening. I wonder if the fed is just trying to manage expectations?

“For now, on balance, the Fed will probably wait until early next year before beginning to reduce the pace of its asset purchases,” Capital Economics’ Paul Ashworth wrote in a note. “But we certainly wouldn't rule out a move in December, particularly not if November's labor market data turn out to be as upbeat as October's were.”

Economists, on average, think the Fed will start trimming its monthly bond purchases in March 2014 -- with a small chance of it doing so in January -- but with an accompanying commitment to keep interest rates at record lows, a Reuters poll showed Wednesday.

Just got knocked down 5% today on a flat sales forecast. I may buy more if it drops another 5-10%. Their new processors look good for mobile, so they might be able to take some share in the medium term.

Thinking alike. I'll wait to see what they do to "get back on track." I don't hold out much hope that the bean counter in charge is going to see the light but then I never expected HP to pick itself up either.
