And thus it begins:
DETROIT (AP) — Electric car maker Tesla Inc. is laying off about 3,600 workers mainly from its salaried ranks as it slashes costs in an effort to deliver on CEO Elon Musk's promise to turn a profit in the second half of the year.
In an email to workers on Tuesday, Musk said the cuts amount to about 9 percent of the company's workforce of 40,000.
Tesla would not say how much money the layoffs would save, but said no factory workers would be affected as the company continues to ramp up production of its lower-priced Model 3 compact car.
Wait until Elon finds out those "white collar" workers were the ones that jumped in and got the line restarted when something went wrong.

Cute electric car. What is that last thing?
I've seen it happen many times when a company decides to make cuts they go for things like IT first. Was working for a company once that gutted its IT department and then a few months later got a NASTY company wide virus...I'm sure the cost of cleaning up the virus was WAY more than maintaining the salary of the IT staff they had just cut.
Here is what I referred to.

Electric cars of any reliability have been around since the mid 1800's.
Since no one else has answered. That is an early radiation detector used for prospecting before Geiger Counters were invented.
