In 1980 the US boycotted the Olympics because the Soviet Union was in Afghanistan. In 2014 the US is participating in the the Olympics despite being in Afghanistan.

Of course the Olympics are entirely different as well. We can monetize anything!
Not sure why any country wants to host the Olympics. Money spent and lost for very little return long term.
