Interim Montecito Update

Late to the party. Apologies.
Flooded 101 Overpass in Montecito
The mudslides are... well... there are no words. This is God sweeping his scythe across the land. CalTrans thinks they will have cleared the road and unclogged the culverts and inspected the surface to reopen the 101 late Monday. I suspect it will be Tuesday morning or even Wednesday. The "debris" is turning out to include bits of victims. Slows down the process obviously. The remaining Thomas Fires are small remote and not threatening. The missing persons list is down to 5 with no increase in death totals. Santa Barbara County has expanded the mandatory evacuation zone to facilitate clean up. They are forcibly removing people who were/are sheltering in place and comfortable for management reasons. They are projecting many weeks but more likely months before being allowed to return. The "Surfliner" Amtrak is running and I saw it pass through Oxnard earlier as full as I have ever seen it. The Channel Islands ferries are re-purposed for commuters past the freeway closure. Tens of billions worth of properties are affected but since 90% is in the value of the land I don't know how to value the actual losses.

Ready for freezing rain then snow as the temperature drops 60° over then 36 hours? Really. Your area looks scary.

Lawyerliz said...

You know this could easily happen this year or the next. Is there anything which could diminish the mud slides?
I tend to doubt it. Controlled burns might help. Tell the NIMBYS to buzz off.

Lawyerliz said...

Our burns got a little out of hand once or twice and there was some grumbling, but NASA must be kept going and appeased, and there are a lot of engineers around

LBD said...

The natural terrain is vulnerable to fire, flooding, earthquakes. When it happens and what happens no one knowns. One thing we do known floods and slides occur here with out a fire so fire becomes a multiplier. This is just sad. IMO :(

Wow.

Friday 3;00PM Pacific. Thomas fire 100% containment.

Still a colossal mess in Montecito, don't hold your breath waiting for the highway to re-open:

Thanks sm_r. As predicted Caltrans wisely held off opening the 101 now declining to even give an estimated date.

An 18th victim has been recovered. Was on the 5 missing list.

If I buy this can I tie it up at your place until I can arrange a trailer?

Lawyerliz said...

Rich, I say, rich.

Lawyerliz said...

Does this mean the Thomas Fire is still burning? Just contained yesterday?

Lawyerliz said...

Thomas fire still burning? With all the money you'd want, is it theoretically possible to "nail down the soil" or Direct the flows?

Lawyerliz said...

I Glod gonna take his/her broom. And give a good sweep to the stock market?
What will be the maximum? 26k? 27k? 29k? Gloddess help us, 30 k?

Lawyerliz said...

Some idiots are charging bit coins on their charge accounts.

Lawyerliz said...

May the gloddess not help thpem and leave them to the mercy of Darwin

LBD said...

Good Morning!

Another day of snow flurries amounting to nothing.

Yes Idiots and the stock market? Prepare for a hard landing. Till then I'm rich!

Cleaning out the office, the paper shredder is running full steam! No matter how big of a shredder they all overheat easily. No fan! I feel like a politician with an subpoena! So happy to be out of all the Businesses.

77° and dry at Echo Beach this morning. Nice breeze here, but wind warnings are out for the mountains and canyons.

RD, I have space for something that size, but you should not have much trouble finding a trailer... I guess you need a new restoration project?

Lawyerliz said...

Restore a hill.

Rob Dawg said...

Come the "Trumppression" a sailboat, solar panels, generator, water still and the Channel Islands are only 20 miles away.

Lawyerliz said...

Other people will notice that.

Lawyerliz said...

How did those feeble hills get there? Volcano farts? Tsunami spit? Why didn't they wash away long ago?

Lawyerliz said...

26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is a-waiming for me. Santa Catalina,
The island of
ROMANCE, romance, romance, romance. . . .

Rob Dawg said...

That's funny. I thought of that song as I was posting.

The mountains around here are upthrusts of the North American Plate Riding over the Pacific plate which is subducting.

Rob Dawg said...

Caltrans: Both directions of US 101 remain closed in Montecito from State Route 150 near Carpinteria to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara due to mudslides. Search and rescue is the priority operation in this area, which affects the progress that can be made toward re-opening US 101. At this point, the estimated opening date of Monday, January 15 is being rescinded and the estimated opening is unknown. Updates will be provided as progress continues to be made.

LL, this guy has a good explanation of the terrain and conditions that this flood event is not unusual for Cali. Note the elevation rise in his comments.

Cali is first, Florida is second, by this measure (housing-adjusted poverty).

sm_landlord said...

With the 101 closed, they are running ferry between Ventura and Santa Barbara. I also hear the train is running again, which should help.

Cinco-X said...

Huh!? I thought they were just piles of dirt...

Cinco-X said...

Morning y'all. 9°F here this morning. Could be worse...

Lawyerliz said...

Sunnny. Good morning.😀 .

Lawyerliz said...

How
?

Lawyerliz said...

Mass transit can be useful. As a backup

Lawyerliz said...

46°as we speak.
I find the housing prices thing hard to believe.
If true, it is because salaries are much lower. All the new space stuff should raise prices around the this area.

Lawyerliz said...

And wages. These are high paying jobs.

Lawyerliz said...

Does the ferry carry cars?

Lawyerliz said...

Yoga at UU church today.. I did it for maybe 5 years in the long ago past.
We are achy today, hub has muscle spasms too, so it will make us much better or worse!!!!!

Lawyerliz said...

I seldom look at CR. Very dull with us to prod him. Few banks failed. Yawn.

Mid 70s mid 50s. Not weather so much as boring. The lawn is mowed. Maybe weed a bit of garden. Youngest is refreshing the succulent baskets. Mrs Dawg has to get to Santa Maria. Cannot believe the roads are so fragile.

LBD said...

Interesting to see Qudoba now serving alcohol. About all that's left is Dairy Queen to join in, Baked Alaska blizzered? The trail of dead brain cells has grown to unrealistic levels. Generations of illiterate parents and schools social programing shows it's effects. Puff away America but don't use tobacco. Rant off.

sm_landlord said...

It was 63° and breezy on my walk this morning. Now it's 75°, could go higher.

Liz, we have facilities that can load/unload thousands of cars just down the coast, but no such facilities in Santa Barbara. So the ferries can only handle people.

Lawyerliz said...

Well they need.help at the other end, dont they? What is happening there?

Lawyerliz said...

We had baby yoga at the UU church. Very nice.

Lawyerliz said...

Yoga at UU church. Big response. Now will gI've classes there! Yay!

LBD said...

Passenger ferry, taxis, Uber, public transportation should take some of the load. I am sure a tug pulling barge for cars would be to difficult. Kali living. Burning flooding and shaking.

Lawyerliz said...

The shithole projection on the trump hotel hilarious.

sm_landlord said...

SB has a wharf that will accommodate cruise ships, and some slips for fishing boats, but that's about it. No easy barge landings or commercial loading terminals like they have at Port Hueneme.

There is automobile access from the *very* long way around via I-5.

I was actually amazed at the amount of auto traffic between Ventura and Santa Barbara on the 101 - they are saying 95,000 vehicles per day.

Of course, thinking back on some of the traffic jams that I have seen, I suppose that should not have been a surprise at all ;-)

Rob Dawg said...

The 101 at the county line sees 75,000 vehicles each day, each direction. There is no practical alternative.

sm_landlord said...

Foothill road is closed?

Oh, you said "practical". Nevermind ;-)

sm_landlord said...

So is the 33 open to the 166? Yes, I know, that's the hard way to get to Santa Maria.

Rob Dawg said...

33 is closed north of Ojai before Rose Valley all the way to Lockwood.

Mrs Dawg is presently on the road. 126 to 5 to 166 and back down to Santa Maria. 4 hours minimum.

Lawyerliz said...

Good grief, she must really have to get there . HELICOPTER? Fleets of helicopters?

sm_landlord said...

They were running helicopters over the Sepulveda pass when the 405 was closed a few years ago.

But a chopper ride to Santa Maria would cost $$$$$. You could probably lease a fixed-wing plane for $$$$, and there are a lot more of them available.

Lawyerliz said...

Can't she go on Skype or something

LBD said...

To bad the high speed train isn't done. Oh it would go there anyway. Never mind. :)

Lawyerliz said...

Errr, why don't you sell? Then you will be truly rich. The hard thing about the mkt is when to sell. Then don't check any more. Until it dips. Then buy the Dip

Lawyerliz said...

The local paper has noticed the 101 and its troubles.

Lawyerliz said...

Will we hit 26k today on the dow?

LBD said...

Dow hits 26K later this week, my SWAG anyway. Then it corrects, maybe. My stock poorfolio sucks, wrong sector but IRA funds to the moon. Just fun riding the roller coaster.

LBD said...

MLK, market closed today. Later :)

Lawyerliz said...

Oops. Should a remembered that.
What sector is so disastrous?

Lawyerliz said...

Trump making the WSJ mad. Don't remember why, except he hadn't got to them yet.
