Kitchen Remodel #01 Update Before
Before 23 April 2018
Expect periodic progress pictures. As you can see this is a kitchen in a time warp.
These sellers had the worst taste in the world. So, I guess it was cheaper and I got to redecorate the whole thing, almost. I left the ugly cabinets in the laundry room.
Our executive mansion had the worlds ugliest old people carpet colors and decor. Bought it cheap on the way down and watched it go down some more, a lot more. Sixteen years later sold it for a handsome profit. The style was again out of step and updating was needed to sell.
At least we had oak kitchen cabinets but butcher block Formica counter tops. Very solidly built house just before the runaway cheap construction methods took place. I miss it but then I think about big city living, the cleaning and care it took. No thanks, I like my downsize living. :)
The Jesuits had slaves working plantations. These sold some when they got into financial problems. Now descendents are being looked for and found using DNA. Some get preferences in admission. Too little, too late, but better then nothing.
Every thing very expensive, gas, eating out, lots of mom and pops. Dil starting to get large and tired easily. Shower fun. Son solicitors to keep Me from falling down. Was mostly in Evanston. Was cold by my lights
One person's "preferential treatment" is another's "leveling the playing field."
As an example:
When it is demonstrably provable that:
Black guy with degree from same (or better) college, better grades, better extra-curricular activities, and no negative marks on his record is still passed over for hiring and offered less money when he is hired - there's a problem. And solutions aren't easy.
Same is true for women - who today graduate in higher numbers with better grades than men, yet still lag in STARTING salaries across almost all professions.
When basic society has been giving preferential treatment to white males for centuries - "preferential treatment" is the norm. So, ANY move toward fairness and equality is going to be viewed as "taking away" and "giving" something not earned - even in those cases where it very much IS earned.
Recently read a study where "economic background" was the strongest predictor of future success (makes sense - advantaged monetarily, means better educated parents - easier access to education and capital, etc., etc., etc.) Except, the study determined that even after normalizing for economic background and education - black males were the one sub-group that got no measurable benefit from "born well".
It's hard to address societal inequities. And the ones currently advantaged by those inequities certainly have no incentive to give them up.
Racism or social ladder. All races are discriminated against due to the social pecking order. Thomas Sowell is a great example of against the odds of his success as a never go anywhere and he does not think anybody needs an advantage. His answer is simple and to the point, Work harder. I agree as we did it, never got any respect for our accomplishments as business people.
My merely relating the conversations between my dad repairman (white) and his client business owner (black) in the 60s/70s would earn me a lifetime ban on every social media outlet. Those two would trade unrepeatable race baiting insults over a beer.
Ya...I grew up poor in the South, and only in the last ten years have I been paid commensurate with my experience. The thing is, even before that, I was making so much more than my parents ever made that I never questioned it...
My granddad really liked and admired Jewish people. He admired their financial acumen. BUT the the language he used was unbelievable. Not in their hearing of course.
I dated a couple of Jewish girls in HS, Nice families. Once I left the gas station I always worked on flat rate commission. Made great money when I hustled and when I bought the business I worked at my income took off. Next I moved to Denver and after working again flat rate commission I met up with my long term business partner for a real blast in making money for the last 20 years of hard work. Retired a fifty and love being a nobody. :) I think most peoples mental block is of their own creation. I see opportunity everywhere if done right.
People find it hard to change, occupations or anything else. One of my cab drivers was in despair about losing most of his business to Uber. He was from india or someplace thereabouts. All moy indian cliens in Miami were doing quite well in biz or were educated in some specialty. I said to him that taxi ing was just not gonna come back and the he should find something else to do. The area seems to be bustling, except a lot of small stores closed. Like everywhere. Restaurants full. Planes full. Lots of people here and there in the airports. Always a line in airports for Starbucks. But change is hard. And it was cold to me, but that was fun. DIL is fine but tired Shower fun.
I have always appreciated the roast format -- yes, the underlying point is "meanness" - but the humor part requires cleverness. It's like "Yo Mama" jokes or any kind of ethnic jokes, (many of which are easily switched to different targets). They certainly aren't PC in today's world - but to be funny, they require more than simple meanness.
Like this from Shaquille O'Neal roasting Justin Bieber:
"Last year you were ranked the fifth most hated person of all time. Kim John-un didn't even score that low, and he uses your music to torture people."
I watched a 5 minute clip - and it was just mean - no cleverness - just meanness for the sake of meanness. I'm certainly no fan of the Trump administration - and they invite criticism on multiple fronts, (so did the Clintons, btw). But, Wolfe's routine was just not funny.

She was a very bad choice and the press club organizers should have previewed her material, especially in today's environment. Haters got to hate seems to be today's theme.
The view out the back of Rob's house is beautiful. I saw it during a long drive spell, but I'll bet mornings in Winter are absolutely gorgeous now that they've had some reas

The carpet on our floor when we bought was consider by Motel 6 to be ugly, far uglier than their carpets
