Their Taxes Will Cover It

ICE raided a meatpacking plant. More than 500 kids missed school the next day (CNN)Jessica Bailiff looked out at her class and saw empty desks where her students were supposed to be. The physics teacher's heart sank. She knew why they weren't there. The day before, federal authorities had swept through a nearby meatpacking plant, rounding up nearly 100 people they accused of being in the United States illegally. Immigrant rights groups say last week's operation in eastern Tennessee was the largest workplace immigration raid in a decade. More than 500 students stayed home from school the next day. Now, a week later, most are back in class. ----- 100 workers detained. 500 kids attending school. And people still pretend that illegal immigrants are net contributors to the economy.

Good Morning!

Up to two earthquakes last week. Add a 2.6 to the list. Some cows woke up but none feel over. :)

Multiply the cost by other welfare expenses like medical, food etc. Nope they contribute and send savings back home. Teacher was scared of loosing her job and the end to the teacher shortage. Racist math.

Maybe we should kick anybody out with an IQ less then 115. With DNA testing we know where they came from. LOL!

Lawyerliz said...

That would be an awful lot of people

Lawyerliz said...

If we kicked out people 99 and under that would be about half. Would solve many population problems.

Yet we still import poverty, Not logical.

California is coming to Austin.

What happens in Kalifornia infects the rest of the country. :(

Actually, the idea that we import poverty is not logical.

America was built on the backs of immigrants - poor, uneducated, hordes of foreigners that swept unfettered into North America - and in 10 generations had supplanted every former superpower on the planet. And at no point in our history did ALL of them succeed. There have been and always will be failures - in every culture - in every economic system - in every political system.

But this thread was based on a BUSINESS getting raided. By definition, these 100 'detained' were ***WORKING***. And their kids were in school.

MY American values say that able bodied adults who are working ARE contributing to society - and kids in school getting an education ARE doing what we expect future valuable contributors to be doing.

Now, if the EMPLOYER was not paying taxes on these people - then it is the (probably white American citizen) that was actually the tax dodger breaking the law.

I got to watch as my Exes two sons both dropped out of school at 16 and went into construction -- working "under the table", (so their boss wouldn't have to pay taxes on them). Eventually one of them wised up, joined the military, eventually went back to school, learned a skill (Sonography), and earns enough to support himself, his stay-at-home wife and their 3 kids.

The other one - the one with the 130+ I.Q. -- was eventually diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and has been and will likely remain on disability for the rest of his life.

A high I.Q. doesn't guarantee a work ethic or success - nor does a low I.Q. preclude a work ethic and guarantee failure.

But, people will go on believing their (demonstrably wrong) assumptions about "other people", because it's requires no effort.

Me? I went to see what employment data we have on foreign-born people in the US. The latest data I can find is 2016 data. But, at that time:

The unemployment rate for foreign-born persons in the United States was 4.3 percent in 2016, down from 4.9 percent in 2015, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The jobless rate of native-born persons fell to 5.0 percent in 2016 from 5.4 percent in the prior year.

So: Unemployment rate comparison:
foreign-born 4.3 ... native 5.0.

Of course, foreign-born includes legal and illegal immigrants, refugees, temporary residents, etc. Since most illegals actually enter legally (many with work visas - which lapse), it isn't a surprise that their employment rate EXCEEDS that of citizens.

The factor you can not measure is work out put. Data does not show that, as an employer I can say very few Americans work hard to increase their potential. Paying on a flat rate commission tells a lot. Why would anybody hire an illegal unless their is profit to be made. I hear that Americans don't have the stomach for the job. Funny all the hunters can stomach the kill skinning and even making the sausage from their kill. Employers in this business want cheap controllable illegals who produce well. Would they work for the money only or for the government hand outs as well. Illegal is still illegal.

First, you're assuming government handouts, when in most cases, illegals cannot get them, (emergency care is an exception).

Mexico actually has had universal health care for more than 10 years. So, coming to the US for "handouts" makes no sense. Compared to most of the developed world, the US ranks last in almost every 'welfare' metric out there.

The irony is that the very profile of 'lazy foreigner who wants to sit on their a** and collect welfare' PRECLUDES them actually making the effort to come to America. The reality is that the ones trying to get to America are self-selecting by motivation to work. They come to America because they believe they CAN get ahead here through hard work - whereas they cannot where they were born.

Growing up in rural NC, the tobacco fields were filled with high school kids - both black and white - working 10 hour days in the sun for minimum wage. Today, those jobs are filled by (mostly legal) migrant workers, because the farmers cannot FIND the teens willing to perform that kind of labor. The American teens that want jobs are working in air conditioned fast food joints, movie theatres and grocery stores stocking shelves.

And in some areas of the South where there were local crackdowns on illegals, (MS, AL), they also drove away the legal immigrants - and created labor shortages the farmers not only couldn't fill cheaply, but couldn't fill after doubling wages.

Actually 'illegal' is a gray area for many undocumented. The majority (about 60%) enter the country legally and then their paper lapses. But, 'overstaying' legal entry is this legal twilight zone, a civil, not a criminal violation.

So, you have different classes of undocumented. Those who entered illegally, yes, that is a crime. Those who enter legally and overstay is another class. And, of course, you have children brought in by parents, who do not begin accruing 'unlawful presence' until they reach 18, (the DACA candidates).

And, of course, the majority do work. Also, it's estimated that about half actually do pay income tax, even though they are not eligible for most benefits, (like SS, earned income tax credits, etc.) They use Tax ID Number instead of SSN to pay, (in 2010 about 3 million individuals paid Federal taxes this way).

So, some employers utilize the TIN and collect SS taxes for illegals, (which puts money into the SS system, despite the fact that the illegals will not be eligible for the benefits). Others employers pay under that table to stiff the government and line their pockets.

It's not a one size fits all world.

I checked, the drop outs from employment add about 1% to the unemployment rate. This is a private not govt estimate. It has been going down was 1.5m now 1.3 m
WSJ sez firms are snapping up teenagers.
Betcha the drop outs will go down some more.
If you pay enough, it may be that some Americans will want to take these unpleasant jobs. Say 25$ an hour to pick veggies and berries. This is stoop labor and I'm told Kali farmers are desperate for pickers. Hours to be limited at the choice of the employee. Some might come out of the woodwork.

Lawyerliz said...

And yes this would cause prices to go up. Well they wanted inflation, didn't they?

Unknown said...

at $25/hr they will build a machine to do it.

LBD said...

They have machines to pick almost everything waiting in the wings for cost effectiveness.

Sorry but I know illegals who have gotten welfare for decades even government housing. So status "illegal" must be observed first for that to even function. The U.S. had the Bracero program but it was dropped in the 60's and that filled the need for farm labor. Today the farm labor works other better paying reliable jobs, full time and sneak the whole family in and complicate the mess, so the problem is all theirs. Looking at it that way the data is BS. To many Americans are paid not to work in America is the real problem. IMO

Lawyerliz said...

Ok, but it will take some time. They've already been trying and tougher crops are already harvested that way. Berries are very delicate and easily squashed. This season needs harvesting now.

LBD said...

Picking strawberries has been conquered several years ago by machines with several cameras to decide ripeness and then cradle/clip the berry and place in a crate. They work day and night faster then humans. Here is one of several from around the world.

Good Morning!

Don't worry our schools don't teach like they used to now but we have Goog and Youtube to think and show us how to do stuff.

Question is why do we need to import more poverty?

Rob Dawg said...

I remember a Jetsons cartoon where Geogechad a brutal day at work. He had to push the button three times.

Rob Dawg said...

The increasing lack of economic mobility means imported poor will stay poor. Very bad policy.

Unknown said...

So we should add a wealth tax and redistribute to the bottom to increase social mobility, right?
