Tech Tuesday

I've been remiss. There are so many Exurban related technology stories recently rather than bring them up for discussion I've been merely collecting them. Cold Fusion, 45% efficient photovoltaics, the economics of electric vehicles, the dearth of battery breakthroughs. And yes, cyborg poultry.

"We have grown the world's first titanium oxide single crystals with large amounts of reactive surfaces, something that was predicted as almost impossible,"

Speaking of technology, Robbo... are you still collecting royalties from your fibrinogen precursors and implantable biomaterials, or have the patents expired, Mr. Rocket Scientist? ;-)

Yeah, well, I had to go look up the news about cold fusion after you posted that little tease. Looks sort of promising, and the guy who announced it isn't a quack, but I can remember bursting with excitement back in 89 when Fleischman and Pons first hit the news. Caveat lector.

OT, but any thoughts on this rather disturbing chart that's been floating about lately: Total Borrowings of Depository Institutions from the Federal Reserve...

Technology in Zimbabwe is so advanced, that with the newest paper currency, everybody can be a billionaire.

Can the Zimbabweans become Trillionaires by Kwanzaa?? ;-)

Bobbo, your blog sucks when you don't comment along with your readers. ;-)

In other news, Ed McMahon is facing foreclosure!! Heyo!!!!

Akubi, obviously the FED is in uncharted waters with this lending policy. I believe they will fall off the end of the Earth, so I am hunkering down financially for the Hell ahead.

re:Ed McMahon

Nothing like taking out a huge loan on your home in your 80's! A loan that you need to work to make the payments on.

disturbing chart that's been floating about lately

It actually takes several months to loot the treasury of the United States on the way out. The billions are limited by the speed of light and computing power.

Bankrupting the government -- the declared goal of the Republican Party -- might finally come to pass.

I always thought that the Republican goal to bankrupt the government was to let us keep our money out of their grubby little hands. Not to put it into the hands of white collar criminals. The last 7.5 years have really burst that illusion.

A google search shows about 3 english language news articles from minor orgs and slashdot and gizmado links to those same sources.

The articles talk about a Japanese researcher who is basically using the same process as those dudes back in '89.

I am very very skeptical.

I would like to know how palladium is supposed to *chemically* shift where deuterium falls on the nuclear binding energy curve.

Ken Deuel said...

And here's a link to an old abstract that says it doesn't.

More precisely, it says the 'dense' deuterium claimed by the cold fusionists is actually a tad bit more spread out than your typical H2 molecule.

on a positive note, waga's link is good news, and it goes beyond just photovoltaics. The same crystals also can be used to generate hydrogen when exposed to UV and visible light for stuff like fuel cells.

That graph is ... interesting? Have such sums been provided via other mechanisms at any point in the past, or is this idea really as "new" as it seems? (nothing being truly new under the sun, of course, but I mean new for the Fed).
