Coraline

Dark and quirky. A technical and visual tour de force. Coraline is not for children. The story is on par with the darkest of the original Grimm's fairy tales.

No CGI in Coraline, it was all animation, but far superior to Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer we all grew up with on TV. I loved this movie. It was too much for my daughter who's 6, but my son who's 10 loved it. It was outstanding.

Didja notice from the previews that there are a shitload of these 3-D movies coming out over the next few months?

Thanks for the no spoilers! Really looking forward to this; a nearby theater has it in 3D. Costs an arm and a leg (or rather, two arms and two legs once the companion is taken into account), but I'm confident it will be worth it. I'll happily pay $10+ for a high quality movie.

And that's the essence of my spending habits these days: I'm happy to put some of my hard-earned money out as economic stimulus, but I pay for quality, and "Made in the USA" is a big plus. I will say that I have not regretted any purchase of any "Made in the USA" items in recent memory. We don't make much anymore by way of tangible goods, but what we do make is top notch.

We are getting a Movico theater here Friday. I think this should be the first thing to see there.

I'm definitely going to buy the graphic novel. This is one of those "I saw the first one when it came out" events.

It'll be interesting how they handle DVD marketing and structuring. Will it only be 3D in Blu-Ray? Does it translate to 3D on a plasma but not LCD? Etc, etc.

The high diving sister act scene is worth the price alone.

Haven't seen it yet (I'm WAY behind on my movies), definitely on the "must see" list.

Off topic - anyone else humming Tom Petty's "free falling"? Is 6800 going to be the new floor or will it continue down. I'm thinking we've got to be getting to the point where actual value will hold the price up a little.

Rob Dawg said...

Tom Petty? Well then "Mary Jane's Last Dance" no doubt about it.

I was checking 1997 lows and outliers. 6800 still sounds about right but there is that annoying spike down at 6391. Still confident that 7000s have no staying power.

Wow - when I wrote my comment, the dow was down about 80, now it's down 186. Probably won't breach 7k today, but I'd be surprised* if it didn't break it by the end of the week.

Ouch.

*baring outside interference. A new "give money to everyone" plan *might* keep the market above 7k, but I really doubt it.

Prop Flop,

Same as the real estate asset fantasy just years late.

Eek!

I've been thinking about shifting back into equities--very slowly and in small amounts, mind you--but I'm just not seeing a bottom. Still, we have to be getting close to capitulation at some point, right?

Right?

No. Things are low but I just cannot imagine that we can ever return to "normal" without some form of bloodletting. We are still looking good over the last 20 years. Not enough pain IMO.

You can't think about a bottom (in equities, which reminds me we need some nice tight bottoms around here Rob) until the massive state budget deficits are met with massive cutbacks. It will take several rounds of fear and name-calling before everyone sees there is no recovery. Until there are reasonable budgets there will be fear and there can be no lasting equity recovery during fear.

How can businesses and investors do anything but hide when they are afraid of taxes, eco-nut regulations and class warfare?

The markets will rebound, and confidence will return to the American public, when I'm given a pair of handcuffs.

It's looking more and more like I got away with a sweeeet $500K+ theft. Too bad I blew it all on exotic juices and liquid grass. :-p
