$200 Million Dollars

In case anyone is not keeping up there was a failure of the Oroville Dam spillway this week. It remains to be seen why or who will be blamed except it is a certainty that the culpable will not be accused never mind indicted. At a noon briefing, DWR Acting Director Bill Croyle estimated repairing the spillway and the damage caused by its malfunction could cost anywhere from $100 million to $200 million. Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article132154774.html#storylink=cpy This is beyond merely criminal. This is treason of the highest order. We are talking about fixing a cement water sluice gap a couple hundred feet long in an existing developed site. Low millions. Once again California takes advantage of any event.

if there is any justice in the world..the person/people responsible will live in Oroville

Lawyerliz said...

There isnt.

Unknown said...

ok Counselor.. lol

Lawyerliz said...

Well maybe there is other damage, other than to the spillway. Nah. It's criminal. Surely someone will want some proof of the cost.

Lawyerliz said...

Surely we should know who the contractor was by this time.

Lawyerliz said...

My son found a house he liked.

Lawyerliz said...

Luckily It is not in california.

Unknown said...

where is the house at??

Unknown said...

poor English.."where is the house located"

Lawyerliz said...

I have no objection to ending a sentence with a preposition. Champaign, Illinois. He has a Va job waiting for him there. A lateral move, but more interesting duties.

Lawyerliz said...

And the housing is cheap!!

Unknown said...

cool..I've never been to Champaign..

I like those cities that are combo state university/state capitols...they usually have a good demographic mix and a decent cost of living

LBD said...

Open end estimate works great and there are no comps to balance. Then wait, there's more, cost over run from unknown damage or a nest of rare bugs found in the way of the repairs. This could be Huge! LOL!

I bet they never thought the spillway would be used, there being a drought and all. They did say this was the first time it had been used, ever. Just like they thought the dikes were high enough in New Orleans. Hmmm Right now here we are having another climate flip flop...80 degrees yesterday, tomorrow expecting two days of rain/sleet/snow/wind.

Lawyerliz said...

Rare bugs, hunh?

Lawyerliz said...

The house is a 10 minute walk from the university. Not so sure how far from the VA.

Unknown said...

the main problem with IL is that property taxes are high and the state govt is broke (and dysfunctional)..

Lawyerliz said...

She's into music and has already been invited to join the oratorio!!

Lawyerliz said...

Yep, but the insurance is low. They can deal.

Lawyerliz said...

And he works for the Feds, not the state. Who knows, but I don't think Trump intends to destroy the VA.

Unknown said...

..and they can get a bit if winter down there..might be a bit of a shock at first for FLA natives..

but anywhere you live has trade-offs (good and bad)..it's really what you make of it..

Unknown said...

I see Gov Moonbeam is requesting federal disaster funds for the storms. I would make such funding contingent on full compliance with federal immigration laws and full cooperation in auditing the CA voter rolls..

Lawyerliz said...

One source said the dam is doomed. Any comment dawg?

Lawyerliz said...

A bit of wintet. A bit???

Lawyerliz said...

I'm not so sure what power he has over cities. I think at least some of California used to be Mexico.

Lawyerliz said...

So people who live below dams should be punished? Come on!

Rob Dawg said...

Jerry: It rained! We need billions!
Donald: oh? You do? Interesting.

Rob Dawg said...

It will require billions to bring up to modern standards so in one sense the dam there now is doomed.

LBD said...

If Kali uses illegals to fix the Dam they could do it for half the price! Wouldn't that be the Kali way?

Unknown said...

I think at least some of California used to be Mexico.

maybe they should ask them for money then..

LBD said...

Mexico is busy paying for a border wall. :)

Lawyerliz said...

Cosumes River levees breaking. Is that bad?

Lawyerliz said...

Well, just call whereever the illegals come from as california, then they won be illegal anymore. Very simple

Lawyerliz said...

So how many dams actually need fixing?

Lawyerliz said...

Or should you all just wait for a big earthquake which will cause everything to need fixing anyway.

Lawyerliz said...

Which reminds me, anything new about
The Japanese reactor?
The lines of refugees?
Greece s financial woes?
Plans to harden up New York s subways, at least?
Corzine?
How Blagovich and Madoff are enjoying their jail stay?
Whether Trump is really cutting costs on the F 35?

LBD said...

Good Morning!

Kali's at the beach, they will get to it later. Let's do lunch!

I found this this AM.

Lawyerliz said...

Well, it's cheaper to live there.

Lawyerliz said...

I have a stupid question. If the hole in the spillway hadn't happened, would the water has been so voluminous that the emergency spillway would have been used anyway???

Rob Dawg said...

Good morning all. 😺
Seems the overnight didn't post automatically. I'll see what happened.

The Oroville dam was headed for overcapacity even with the spillway at capacity. Would have saved half a day or so is all.

Lawyerliz said...

Thx. So fuss about halF a day.

LBD said...

That's why it's call Calirado now. :)

Lawyerliz said...

The employs would prolly charge the full amount

Unknown said...

Well, just call whereever the illegals come from as california, then they won be illegal anymore. Very simple

paraphrasing Scott B.

"if the Dems were convinced illegal immigrants were inclined to vote Republican..the wall would be built already and 100 feet tall.."

Unknown said...

The Japanese reactor?

saw something in the news the other day about radiation levels spiking again..which may explain why Abe is playing golf in Florida this weekend.. :)

There is an interesting book written by a Scotch Irishman whow escaped to get a law degree from Yale or the like, and thinks little I deduce of his left behind hillbillies (I can say this because I'm partly one.). So I wonder if the Scotch Irish were a group of the past who had too many arrive, and were never integrated, fully or partly, whow are now jealous because black people and later new comers are now being integrated, or beginning to be integrated into American society. He goes on about how feckless they are in kwe ping those jobs that they are able to get and Scotch Irish welfare queens.

Lawyerliz said...

Excuse spelling errors plz. I didn't order the bok because it was too damned depressing.

prairiedog said...

The videos I saw yesterday of the spillway and river indicated that at one point a bit downstream, the damn was being undercut by water flowing out of the bank of the river underneath a large pylon. This is not good. Oh, and good morning. Expecting some weather and it is unsettled yet whether we get a flood along with it.

Unknown said...

and were never integrated,

what do you mean by "never integrated"..my observation is that the Scotch/Irish are fully integrated..

which doesn't mean they don't retain some of their traditions..that is very normal (and healthy) in my view...

Lawyerliz said...

Such as not working reliably?

Lawyerliz said...

No it's not. I think I would leave until it was resolved to my satisfaction .

Unknown said...

Scotch/Irish don't work reliably?? where do you get that from??

Lawyerliz said...

Scotch-Irish are not Irish.

Unknown said...

oh..maybe you were talking about the dam...

Lawyerliz said...

The book I referred to, who talked about the ones who stayed in Appalachia.

Unknown said...

most Irish have some Scotch in them..and vice-versa..the countries are a stones throw from each other..

Rob Dawg said...

How many remember the letter from the olde country that included the passages "he bravely fought his rescuers off" and "the fire burned for three days?"

Rob Dawg said...

Until the long bow was invented. 😀

Unknown said...

my great-grandfather used to tell the story that our family claims to be 100% Irish...but the county we come from is just across the water from Scotland..and in the evening the Irish boys would row their boats over to see their Scottish girlfriends..and would pass the Scottish boys rowing their boats over to see their Irish girlfriends.. :)

Lawyerliz said...

Hahahaha

Lawyerliz said...

All extremely sinful!!

Unknown said...

I get it now...Trump's mother is Scottish..so Liz is trying to tie his strong views against illegal immigration to that..because some book..

Unknown said...

ok off to Sunday brunch..have a great day everyone

Lawyerliz said...

Gosh, I didn't know that.

Letter from an Irish Mother to her Son

Dear Son,

Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast. We are all doing very well.

You won't recognise the house when you get home - we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved. I won't be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven't seen them since.

Your father's got a really good job now. He's got 500 men under him. He's cutting the grass at the cemetery.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven't found out if it's a boy or a girl, so I don't know whether you are an auntie or an uncle.

Your brother Tom is still in the army. He's only been there a short while and they've already made him a court martial!

Your Uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whiskey in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cremated him and it took three days to put out the fire.

I'm sorry to say that your cousin Seamus was arrested while riding his bicycle last week. They are charging him with dope peddling.

I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him.

The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days. Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times.

We had a letter from the under-taker. He said if the last payment on your Grandmother's plot wasn't paid in seven days, up she comes.

About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down.

There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.

Your loving Mum

P.S. I was going to send you some money but I had already sealed the envelope.

Sheesh. If that was written about black people, you would be hanged, drawn and quartered.
Blogger still recalcitrant?

Lawyerliz said...

Well I learned what happened to some refugees stranded in Greece. They are still there. Because of a WW II bomb recently discovered and being remove some of the got a day trip to the Thessaloniki museum. 60k in cam o s including a former toilet paper factory.

Lawyerliz said...

That's camps

Sheesh. If that was written about black people, you would be hanged, drawn and quartered.

Not sure but I think the "joke" predates the Great Depression. I said it was old.

New post. Manual, but some fun links.
