I Didn't Vote For That!

Oh yes, you did.  One of the sneakiest anti-democratic tricks is an "off-cycle" election.

How about March 7th in Los Angeles?  anything so important that it couldn't be last Novemer?  Heck yes.  Mayor and tax increases.  Nothing like voter suppression to skew the outcome.

not to worry.  The mayor is safe.  Let us discuss the tax increase.

Measure H.  Reading the proponents message you'd be hard pressed to learn it means a 1/4th cent tax increase.  That means 9.5% from the current 9.25% in the City of LA.  Or properly El Pueblo de la Reyna de Los Angeles (The Town of The Queen of Angels).

No one even blinks at 9.25% sales tax as high, regressive and counterproductive?  The Laffer Curve is currently in disrepute but there are elements that resonate.

What the Laffer Curve doesn't track is rising public obligations in the red zone.  Revenues plus expenses drives net benefits down much faster.

we have 9.5% up here too (soon going to 9.75%)...they promised the last quarter point bump was "temporary"..ROFL

Unknown said...

I predict the next bump will be to 9.99%..because you know..at 10%..people might start complaining...

In Dawgifornia there will be a general 5% terminal retail transaction tax. Consumption tax sorta. The districts and prefectures are not allowed to charge anything so as to not set off bidding wars.

the bump from 9.25% to 9.5% was supposedly because the recession was dampening tax revenues. The 9.5% from 9.75% is because economic & population growth has suddenly revealed all kinds of infrastructure needs...

either way...we lose lol

What's the sale tax going to be when the sanctuary cities lose their Federal Funds?

Unknown said...

Seattle thinks they are going to get all kinds of federal infrastructure money for their airport expansion...yeah right..

Lawyerliz said...

I don't think they will. Everything is a bluff

Unknown said...

Nebraska will get trillions of infrastructure dollars...lol

We are just a bunch of poor farmers here and qualify as a welfare tax state. Thank you very much! :)

California is fixin' for a fight by adopting more restrictive EPA standards if the Federal regs are relaxed.

I would have thought the asking for disaster funds at in hand would have been enough warning.

We can build you a wall with Kansas if you'd like... :)

Unknown said...

I saw the announcement of the approval of federal disaster funds for Kali emphasized "matching funds"..let's see how that goes...

Rob Dawg said...

A wall sounds prudent. There is a city in Kansas named Liberal. ;)

Unknown said...

you can bet Kali will throw every project that was languishing in their infrastructure backlog into the mix to try to get Fed disaster funds for it..

LBD said...

Obamaha How liberal can you get? Wall with Kalirado would work for me.

Having NO retail sales tax here in OR is a nice change of pace from CA.

Funny though... went to Paris in October and the VAT is crazy.

Trump's taunts are inspiring national pride. Not surprisingly I think.

Nice bounce in durable goods. Highlights why month to month is too noisy to trust without context.

Cool. Not if you eat youself into a cake stupor. And drink a bit too much wine. The cake was really good. I'm afraid to look at my blood sugar.

Good Morning from the outback!

Snow still melting and almost back in the 50'sF. :)

Unknown said...

It looks like we are going to come up just short of 15 inches of precip for the month..so unfortunately I can't check experiencing that off my "bucket list" ;<)

LBD said...

My bucket list continues to grow all the time. I have so many projects in the fire I can't die for at least 20 more years! Fun coupons will be spent!

Unknown said...

we're getting a nice dusting of snow this morning (1-3 inches they say)..it will be gone by afternoon (as it turns to rain)...but appropriate way to end the month.

Think I'll turn a spring training game on the radio..turn on my space heater and bring it up real close..and pretend I'm in Arizona.. :<)

Just took the Series 7 practice exam 50 questions 24/50 including 4-5 "been a long time since I took a test like this" stupid errors and 2-3 lucky guesses.

New post.

Oh we aren't tested. We just have to sit there and we get a code to prove our asses were sitting there. I've done 2 1/2 hours and reaching my limit. We could be reading a magazine. I am now on a lunch reprieve. I have a bit more torture to do and I think I will pick out segments of no more than 2 hours, regardless of the content.
