This old house was the last hurrah of an old way of thinking. These days strip the the architectural elements and sell them in California and use the profits to build a modern home.
That is the fun, challenging and frustration thing about old houses is not much was of standard sizes. Then you have the low income home builders using scrap materials. Some of the things they did are just sad and others are kind of genius.
Windows. Rip those abominations out to the frame and put in things that don't have negative "R" values.
Windows, yes they have very much improved. Unfortunately the current project is the runt of the litter and the recondition budget falls short of replacement. So they get repaired cleaned up recaulked and weather stripped. If they where standard size I would probably break down and do pocket windows.
Last several reconditions I have done have involved "the window people" coming out, taking measurements, quoting a fixed price, and doing a great job in a third the time.
My time is worthless and it's good winter therapy. LOL!
Our windows people were by my lights very expensive bUT they did a good job and the power bill went down
