California would have to find an additional $200 billion per year, likely in new tax revenues, to create a so-called “single-payer” system, the analysis by the Senate Appropriations committee found. The estimate assumes the state would retain the existing $200 billion in local, state and federal funding it currently receives to offset the total $400 billion price tag.
The cost analysis is seen as the biggest hurdle to create a universal system, proposed by Sens. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, and Toni Atkins, D-San Diego.
Steep projected costs have derailed efforts over the past two decades to establish a publicly funded, universal health care system in California. The cost is higher than what is proposed for the state’s General Fund budget is about $180 billion.
Employers currently spend between $100 billion to $150 billion per year, which could be available to help offset total costs, according to the analysis. Under that scenario, total new state spending to implement would be between $50 billion and $100 billion per year.

Breaking news on the subject of taxation:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge by several major corporations to a Michigan law that retroactively changed the way businesses are taxed in the state, leading to $1 billion extra for government coffers.
The justices turned away appeals by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co ( GT ), IBM Corp , AT&T Inc's ( T ) DirecTV, Monster Beverage Corp ( MNST )and others of a lower court's ruling in favor of the state. The companies argued that Michigan's retroactive change to its tax regime violated their rights to due process under the U.S. Constitution.
In Dawgifornia, Public Health is a public right and public responsibility. Education, safe food, safe medicine, early diagnostics, those are public issues. Sickness coverage is a personal choice and the public interest is limited to making sure they aren't scams and remain solvent.

Cancelling our local newspaper. The Ventura County Star arrived this morning. 4.4 oz and 24 pages total. Two 13 page sections. The front half had gobs of white space and huge pictures and scant content. A large amount of the "news" was USA Today reprints. Three pages were whole page ads one being a Ventura County Star self generated no revenue ad. Next month the printing plant is shuttering. And get this. The price is rising to $27/month.

Those pushing single-payer for health care are the same pushing gun control for crime -- their agenda is all about statism and nothing to do with solving the problem.
