Four hundred Billion Dollars

SacBee - It would cost $400 billion per year to remake California’s health insurance marketplace and create a publicly funded universal heath care system, according to a state financial analysis released Monday.
California would have to find an additional $200 billion per year, likely in new tax revenues, to create a so-called “single-payer” system, the analysis by the Senate Appropriations committee found. The estimate assumes the state would retain the existing $200 billion in local, state and federal funding it currently receives to offset the total $400 billion price tag.
The cost analysis is seen as the biggest hurdle to create a universal system, proposed by Sens. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, and Toni Atkins, D-San Diego.
Steep projected costs have derailed efforts over the past two decades to establish a publicly funded, universal health care system in California. The cost is higher than what is proposed for the state’s General Fund budget is about $180 billion.
Employers currently spend between $100 billion to $150 billion per year, which could be available to help offset total costs, according to the analysis. Under that scenario, total new state spending to implement would be between $50 billion and $100 billion per year.

Do the math.   36 million.  Per person $11,000 each.  $45,000 family of four.  But wait.  You know damn well half will pay nothing so $90,000 per paying family.  Will we finally rise up with pitchforks?

Why is health insurance cheaper in other countries?

Rob Dawg said...

Sadly lower health costs in other countries is in no small part because we pay for R&D.

Mr. Dawg is coy.

They smoke more too.

Ok, what do we do?

Breaking news on the subject of taxation:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge by several major corporations to a Michigan law that retroactively changed the way businesses are taxed in the state, leading to $1 billion extra for government coffers.

The justices turned away appeals by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co ( GT ), IBM Corp , AT&T Inc's ( T ) DirecTV, Monster Beverage Corp ( MNST )and others of a lower court's ruling in favor of the state. The companies argued that Michigan's retroactive change to its tax regime violated their rights to due process under the U.S. Constitution.

In Dawgifornia, Public Health is a public right and public responsibility. Education, safe food, safe medicine, early diagnostics, those are public issues. Sickness coverage is a personal choice and the public interest is limited to making sure they aren't scams and remain solvent.

Kali is crazier everyday. I suggest they use the excess profits from CALPERS to finance it. Ducks and runs!

Ok, you are diagnosed early with stage 1 canvcer. Not so bad
But you have no money. What then?

SSDI after a year you get Medicare part A. Your state should fund some of the rest with Medicaid. Broke? the simple solution is BK. Some thing must work the Hospitals are full of have nots getting services here.

State problem to work on. IMO.

Forget about Cadillac Plans, or even Chevy Plans. We'll all have Yugo Plans!

Yugo to the end of the line.

Would publishing a list of the 6 dozen graduates of Notre Dame who walked out on Vice President Pence be too much to ask? They deserve to be identified for their convictions.

But Liz, that's the obvious end game of single payer. Lowest common denominator for the 99% and concierge service for the 1% that will no doubt include all those voting for the change.

Lawyerliz said...

Not obvious to me.

Specify.

Cancelling our local newspaper. The Ventura County Star arrived this morning. 4.4 oz and 24 pages total. Two 13 page sections. The front half had gobs of white space and huge pictures and scant content. A large amount of the "news" was USA Today reprints. Three pages were whole page ads one being a Ventura County Star self generated no revenue ad. Next month the printing plant is shuttering. And get this. The price is rising to $27/month.

An interesting number, $400 Billion.
It would be interesting to look at the assumptions...
Americans already pay twice what any other industrialized country does with shitty outcomes.
Eliminating 75% plus of overhead is going to increase costs?
And has anyone considered what a boost Single Payer would small business formation or those who want to move to another employer?
America is too incompetent to implement Single Payer when so many other Countries have done it successfully?
Big Pharma and big Med spend hundreds of millions opposing single payer due to their dedication to the Hippocratic oath?
OkeyDokey.

Rob Dawg said...

The assumptions are all over the place. The one that stood out being +$50b in new services provided. The other being the $100-150 billion in private health payments being redirected from businesses and individuals for the collective $400 billion.

Time to consider living in Vancouver Washington and shopping in sales tax free Oregon?

Scratching my head trying to figure out how putting California in charge of anything is going to save money or provide better outcomes.

I found the article you posted from the SacBee. It compares the bill you commented on to Obamacare, (The affordable care act).
I found this quote from the article most informative:

"Insurance groups, health plans and Kaiser Permanente are against the bill. Industry representatives say California should focus on improving the Affordable Care Act."

Color me shocked. Insurance companies advocating for insurance reform rather than elimination of insurance altogether.

Anybody talking about the "payer" side is falling for the mis-direction.

Those pushing single-payer for health care are the same pushing gun control for crime -- their agenda is all about statism and nothing to do with solving the problem.

Health care is all about the costs, and if DC wasn't bought and paid for they could fix those in very short order. [And no, that doesn't mean price fixing.]

Good Morning!

Wake up! Busy day.

I suggest Kali try what ever makes them happy and leave the rest of us alone.

Rob Dawg said...

There is the small matter of California contributing $80b per year more to FedGov than it gets back.

Lawyerliz said...

Ask a red state for it.

After all, they should be richer than Kali with all those low taxes, trickle down and business encouragement. And they should be more honest and less corrupt with all that churchgoing and religifying.

Agreed... Also, if they didn't get their degrees, shouldn't Notre Dame records reflect that?

But it should provide plenty of comedic value... Maybe they could monetize that?

Need to see that in a loop at super slow motion to make sure what actually happened.
