Loss of Innovation

Innovation is now in the sole possession of mature, sober, socially suave individuals buttressed by classic education and methodical career advancement in the field and only the field where they are expected to come up with breakthroughs.

Good thing we catch those outlying kids an medicate them back on the path.

An American invention together with inputs from many countries.

Have garages been forebidden for the next generation of tinkerers?
Must of the new stuff.in in biology or biochemistry. For that you usually need equiment.

LBD said...

Garage inventors have been replaced by computers, Just like the need for education has been replaced by Google brains. Don't get me wrong information is a great advancement if it is correct and not guided. The curious will servive but I see smaller numbers as playing and obtaining things is far more important nowdays.

Wakey wakey East coasters. Is everyone on vacation? Or, forgotten how to write?

Good Morning!

Yes, Still on vacation but time to head home and get the patio finished for guests this weekend.

Ya... Next week I'm building a dry stacked stone retaining wall. I'll betcha it's gonna be hot too... 😫

Lawyerliz said...

If I had told him, he would have grumbled

LBD said...

Innovation for me was building my retaining walls with 1 ton cement waste blocks and topping with decorative block. I have a friend who buys what ever equipment he needs at the time and sells it after he is done with his project. Some time even profits a little. Flex time un like a rental unit. Save your back. :)

http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2017/06/california_bans_travel_to_alab.html
California's Attorney General said the state is pulling the plug on state-sponsored travel to Alabama and three other places - Kentucky, South Dakota and Texas. The addition brings the total number of states included in California's travel ban to eight, with Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee placed on the off-limits list earlier this year.

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/448942/civil-asset-forfeiture-police-abuse-clarence-thomas

The spreading use of forfeiture has of course drawn resistance amid concerns about due process and outright abuse. The Supreme Court declined to hear a high-profile forfeiture case, Leonard v. Texas, for procedural reasons. But Justice Thomas issued a statement on the case that was both erudite and blistering. It was also very humane: Justice Thomas has a keen interest in the literary details as well as the legal ones. He wrote: This system — where police can seize property with limited judicial oversight and retain it for their own use — has led to egregious and well-chronicled abuses. According to one nationally publicized report, for example, police in the town of Tenaha, Texas, regularly seized the property of out-of-town drivers passing through and collaborated with the district attorney to coerce them into signing waivers of their property rights. In one case, local officials threatened to file unsubstantiated felony charges against a Latino driver and his girlfriend and to place their children in foster care unless they signed a waiver. In another, they seized a black plant worker’s car and all his property (including cash he planned to use for dental work), jailed him for a night, forced him to sign away his property, and then released him on the side of the road without a phone or money. He was forced to walk to a Wal-Mart, where he borrowed a stranger’s phone to call his mother, who had to rent a car to pick him up. These forfeiture operations frequently target the poor and other groups least able to defend their interests in forfeiture proceedings. Perversely, these same groups are often the most burdened by forfeiture. They are more likely to use cash than alternative forms of payment, like credit cards, which may be less susceptible to forfeiture. And they are more likely to suffer in their daily lives while they litigate for the return of a critical item of property, such as a car or a home. The issue, Justice Thomas wrote, is “whether modern civil-forfeiture statutes can be squared with the Due Process Clause and our Nation’s history.”

LBD said...

Just got home Gas is now $1.99. I did however spot a TESLA 125 miles north of Denver with Kalirado plates. Somebody isn't afraid to drive out of town! Had a fun two weeks now back to the diet, at least till this weekend. :)

Lawyerliz said...

Gas usually goes up this time of year.

LBD said...

Yes it does and they are still drilling north and east of Denver. More collection tanks as well. Somebody is making money.

Used a Micky D's touch screen last week 4 of them and 1 counter register that no one used while we where there. There goes the $15 an hour delusion.

Lots of cannot hide data saying there is a general slowing. Oil. Durable goods.

LBD said...

Looks like the festival stuff here is slowing down. Get home and they announced the Annual Blue Grass festival will not continue. Wonder if the old mold is not getting the free volunteer help from the young. That's OK you can see it all on You Tube anyway.

Did see a billboard looking for RV delivery drivers claiming there is a shortage but I bet you have to have a clean drivers license and pass a drug test.

No jobs but opportunities exist.

I'll bet the pay is bad. Local Ford dealership pays drivers by the mile on a zipcode to zipcode basis. A 12-hour roundtrip trip can gross you $100 as a contract worker. So yes, they have trouble finding drivers too!

Rob Dawg said...

They don't call it piecework anymore but it is piecework.

LBD said...

I would think over the road and local would be different. Car dealers are Valets and not OTR drivers. Market price is still set by availability of workers.

We are vacationing to see the eclipse on the 21st of August. Will take a while Cause the hub can drive only 2 to 3 hours a week. Made hotel reservations last year, so should be no prob there.

Lawyerliz said...

A day, not a week

LBD said...

Good Morning!

We drive an average of 65 MPH 4-7 hrs a day lots of stops IMO. They are booking hotel rooms here for the eclipse. Star gassing here is pretty good, loved laying on the beach at Lake Mac star gassing after a bonfire. Miss the lake house this time of year.

If your job is unfulfilling then you are in the wrong job.

Hi all, I've lurked CR off and on since about 2007ish, but I could never stomach commenting in the comment section. I've read most of your opinions for years tho, and thought this might be a sane enough forum to occasionally participate in. Since I know more about most of you than you know about me, my background is I'm a civil engineer in Austin and I work mostly with floodplain studies and land development. Listening to your discussions over the years has helped me form my own opinions on things over the years, especially when I disagree. I lean more left than most of the comments I read here, but not nearly as left as the typical Austinite. Introductions are hard when you've been a wallflower for a decade.

Welcome welcome. My last college was WPI where I was on the rugby team and the mascot was a goat. Things are a bit slow and shallow until I get back from vacation about Sunday.

Lawyerliz said...

Hey, I'm not shallow!

LBD said...

Shallow? Wait a minute I don't have my pool completely filled yet.

Rob Dawg said...

The pool at the resort is pleasantly warm. Warmer still from inside however. High West Distillery. Fancy place just purchased by mega beverage Constellation Brands. Makes most excellent burbon whiskey and vodka. got a couple bottles. 92 and 93 points.

Rob Dawg said...

I should add that these pools are not real swimming pools anymore. 4' 6" deep for insurance reasons. No diving boards. No deep end. No diving. No running.

LBD said...

Wow I just learned Playboy magazine has a White House reporter and I just thought it was a kids picture book. :)

Glad your are having a good time. My pool was a pleasant 84F and will get warmer as the solar heater is now working. I may add to it as the patio continues to take shape.
