How Twisted Is US Immigration? This Twisted

Another project is the proposed Europa Village, a residential, hotel, winery and event space development partly paid for with $60 million from over 100 Chinese investors through EB-5 visas — a program that allows foreigners to apply to become legal U.S. residents in exchange for as little as a $500,000 investment in a business that creates or preserves at least 10 jobs.

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-temecula-chinese-investment-20170417-story.html
 Continues:
A number of hotels and strip malls have been financed through Chinese EB-5 investments, dozens of homes have been sold to overseas Chinese buyers and a local education firm co-founded by former Walnut Mayor Joaquin Lim is placing hundreds of tuition-paying students from China in public schools in the neighboring cities of Murrieta and Temecula. To provide more housing for the students and others, Lim is in talks with China’s third-largest home builder, Country Garden, to build a hotel in Murrieta.

Totally messed up.

I think that program has been in existence for a long time, and not just for Chinese either.

Good morning.

Lawyerliz said...

Well the students are smart and paying their way, and money we sent over there is coming back. Could be worse.

Lawyerliz said...

Could we pay they to take Trump? Oh, never mind.

Good Morning!

More rain today, crops are mostly planted.

This has been going on for ever. Foreigners paid for Clintons but they refused to take them. LOL!

Is Kali particularly corrupt in your opinion Rob? Is Mormon Utah less corrupt? Maine? Oklahoma? I won't mention Floridah. the Dakotas?

LBD said...

Bigger the state bigger the corruption.

Good morning lbd, no rain here and we need the rainy season to begin. My poem went over ok, and I read Arnolds Dover Beach too, and a teacher said I had a good reading voice. I was flather, but Arnold is so good he forces one to read it well.

Lawyerliz said...

Per capita corruption bigger?

Size matters?!?!?!!

Lawyerliz said...

The student poetry was mostly ummm not good, but there was one girl who presented 2 poems, one good, one utterly fabulous. Could be published anywhere.

Liz, I just left you a comment about our condo several threads back.

Yes, living in a small town has made it possible to see it in action. Pie is smaller less actors to chose from. a few years ago a underfunded developer from the old boys club got money on the promise of building a strip mall for an almost done deal with a small chain store. The perfectly good restaunt was disassembled and moved to reuse again. The property tax on line shows no improvement tax paid since. Basically the local government gave him money on a promise not filled to remove the building so he pays no tax. Happens all the time for the same group of people. Citizens do not care and can't even figure it out.

I read one yesterday. Is this a new one?

Lawyerliz said...

Bad. Will deal be Done eventually? You said it was close.

Why don't you run to throw the rascals out? Asking a lot, I know.

dodahman said...

Why don't we all throw out all the rascals?

There would be no one left to govern us, I am afraid...

Yes. Here it is again. Besides a monthly assessment of $540, we pay about $3k in property taxes (includes senior exemption...) for our 1,100 sq. ft. 2/2 condo.

The $540 may seem high but 3 elevator motors are being replaced (after 35 years) at a cost of 600k. We had a leak in one wall last year that required a scaffold being dropped from the roof, bricks to be removed and insulation and draining modifications. The outside wall is a common element and was paid for by the assessment. I don't want to know what it cost. Tuck pointing on the building is about 1 million every decade.

Health, Past 18 years total of 2 heat attacks, stents and major OH surgery, 4 rounds of cancer including stage 4. Not dependable and I live outside the city limits but do have rentals biz interest in the city. City controls most of the county services. Gave up the idea when I figured out nobody seems to care. Big uprising comes when man bites dog.

I responded cued a teenaged turtle from the pool. He was not swimming very vigorously. I have good turtle karma!!!

Wooh. Elevators are expensive as are wall leaks. Our property taxes for 2600 square feet and 2 3/4 acres are a bout the same.

Gov Brown is not politically corrupt except in the sense that he accepts the corruption around him as a necessary evil. He is an enabler.

Diane Feinstein, Willie Brown, the long list having served or are serving sentences. Yee's gun running! The City of Bell. Yes, CA is at or near the top.

Despite the daily regime of both big and little pharma every day I wake up another day older. Pffft. What good are all these pills? Oh wait, I wake up every day.

I do take a fist full but most are supplement style. Niacin, melatonin, Vit C, multivit, aspirin, glucosamine, condroitin, Vit E.

Short list of whats right with me is getting shorter. Medicine is expensive till you need it and then it is priceless. I feel the best over all then I have for over 10 years. :)

Lawyerliz said...

I take a lot of that plus other things such as Fenugreek and alpha lipoic acid and cinnamon

Hey! An idea. Let's put TSLA in the Dow 30 Industrial Index.

The overreach failure of Elon Musk will not hurt the practical efforts he started. Hyperloop and Space-X will go on.

Stage 4 was 11 years ago, just finished R-chop last years and now on maintenance treatments for about another year. Everything is going great right now.

Lawyerliz said...

Hub had non Hodgkins lymphoma ND was supposed to be dear 30 or 35 years ago. He never heard of R chop. Nor was he told he was stage anything.

LBD said...

11 years ago I thought I was not going to make it. Mine it seems odd to the doctors. Never goes away and the systems and treatments are hard to decide on. Normal treatments quit working at one point and that is when I went to stage 4 and got into a study with liquid radiation. Life time does in about 15 minutes. Thanks GSK. Never got sick and tumors where back to safe range in a few weeks, lasted over 9 years. Tumors everywhere even in my lungs. R-Chop has been around for a long time as far as I know. Nasty treatment but it works.

LBD said...

They don't stage now either, some other way to scale it but I really don't pay much attention.

Isn't the Dow Industrials dominated by banks now?

Must be because my stocks don't track the Dow very well.
I have no bank stocks.

You'll notice the greedy Americans featured in the story: the realtor and the vintner. California is being sold-off to the highest bidder. The FIRE people love it; the politicians love it (more property taxes); the Chinese love it because they get to move their money out of CHina and come to the USA.

Peter Brimelow was right: the USA is going to have an Asian coast.

Another day and nothing about repealing NAFTA, only modifying it. Under NAFTA renegotiation is allowed. Trump probably won’t ever admit this. Instead you’ll just hear lots of reports by politicians and business people who are massively benefiting from NAFTA. Like other issues, expect Trump to declare success for how his changes, not NAFTA, have benefits America.

Lawyerliz said...

You want a new Chinese exclusion Act,?
Just asking.

LBD, NPR just broadcast a report about recycling drugs. Partly used blister packs are being recycled in Iowa mostly to people who may not be able to afford them. The article emphasizes that recycling is obviously superior to destroying them. Nursing homes are major sources of recycled medicine. I know I would accept and used these drugs if they saved me a lot om money. The way I see it, if they are going to be destroyed, they are expensive, and I could take them, I'm "qualified" to get them.
I couldn't find the NPR or Propublica link.

LBD said...

Good Morning!

We do recycle excess medicine and have for many years. I know the cost are insane for many, it's a waste not to.

Belated good morning all.

Hi, PRCalDude. Don't be a stranger.

Trump is personally juggling too many balls. He needs some Adderall. Maybe some expired capsules from Iowa. ;)

NAFTA suffers from jurisdiction shopping. It isn't the only instance where location mobility benefits the richest participant.

Even if he did say something, he wouldn't mean it. NAFTA IS hard, who knew.

Liz,

Do I want a new Chinese exclusion act? Absolutely. We might take some, but not as many as want to come here just because this is a great place for them to stash their ill-gotten cash away from public corruption crackdowns in their homeland. Also, American kids deserve spots in American schools and universities. Our fathers went to war to secure this nation for their own children and grandchildren, not for the Chinese. We've done plenty for them by defeating Japanese imperialism and offshoring our entire manufacturing base to them.
