Irma Prompts Postponement Of Planned Rocket Launch From Vandenberg AFB

Hurricane Irma isn’t just impacting the southeastern U.S.   The hurricane prompted the postponement of a planned rocket launch from Santa Barbara County.  The United Launch Alliance delayed its planned Thursday launch of an Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The rocket was set to carry a classified military payload into orbit.  ULA officials say some key members of the launch team are from Florida, and they wanted them to be able to be with their families. Some team members also helped secure the company’s launch facilities at Cape Canaveral in Florida in advance of the hurricane.

The grassy dog part of yesterday, is the pond of dogs. Watet At least a foot deep, maybe 3 feet tall. It was ok to go for a walk. Target closed and some local restaurants closed.

How is Dawg's mom?

Everyone survive Irma alright?

Lawyerliz said...

I did. Just don't want to go back until we have water again.

Mom's "stuff" is sadly intact. My brother was granted police powers in the trailer park and says only a half dozen car ports were damaged

Dilbert. Don't be a stranger. We are laid back and comfortable here.

Dilbert thinks physical violence against Trump supporters is "understandable"...just saying

and just a reminder of what he said..it was right after the Trump rally in San Jose...that was the one where many rally attendees were physically attacked upon leaving the rally..Dilbert's comment was (paraphrasing)

well that's too bad..but understandable given the candidate they are supporting

The interesting daughter is headed for Tenn from Georgia as the friends lease is up. Not sure that is heading in the right direction. As she is pregnant staying near good hospitals is muy importante. At least Tenn is mostly on the left side, the better side of the cone. Seems Tampa St. Pete dodged a bullet. I guess she and the menagerie will be wanderers for a bit more.

Some of my friends have some power. Boil water order. Going down for free breakfast.

The Englewood bunker dome never lost power.

Someone I was speaking with had a friend or relative with property in Key Largo, and was hoping for total destruction. Apparently you're not allowed to do tear downs there, and have to leave the property "as is" with maintenance. They were waiting for the trailer to be blown away so that they could put up something nice. Apparently the gubmint it trying to preserve "old Florida"...

:thumbs up:

Hope she starts away from Memphis. Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville should be fine...

Lawyerliz said...

Part of the reason is that they want to lessen the population down there. It can't really be evacuated. The supply lines are fragile. Water depends on one pipe.

Lawyerliz said...

Has she matured any?

Lawyerliz said...

I'm more worried about water. The water pipes on Merritt Island are showing their age. Housekeeping staff told me they lost cable and went to sleep early.

Latest I phone will cost 1000$. I don't mind if they last 10 years. My present smart phone lasted 3 years so far. Maybe the price will come down. I hope it will have a really big screen.

If a structure is damaged beyond 50% of it's value, you have to rebuild ABOVE the 100yr floodplain elevation to get FEMA/insurance funds for the rebuild. This is very much at odds with many historical building regulations and causes the owners to be stuck between two layers of regulations. being unable to rebuild means the structure remains damaged and just rots. Nobody wins.

Stilts?

Unknown said...

For a normal homeowner, that means stilts or on fill or over the garage. You can't put a historic structure on stilts and maintain the architecture.

Rob Dawg said...

Normal homeowners are screwed. If you are rich and connected there are ways.

Good Morning!

Times like these I am glad we chose the simple life. Cheap fun is still fun.

Re: Houses on stilts
The NYT had a series of articles on a family building a new house down Floridoh! way. The bottom was a garage with doors to open to let the storm surge through. The garage was the stilt.
When we were thinking of adding a second story to our Palo Africa home I investigated the building code and found that we would have to raise the house about 3 feet to get permits. The house was on the levee of San Francisquito Creek and the last flood would have by passed the house if I had kicked in a fence to let the water flow around the house. The reason for the flood is the Chaucer/Pope St dam, AKA bridge. This bridge will never be fixed as at least 20 public agencies have to give permission.
Flood insurance is a joke.

Is it legal to dig a pond and use the dirt for a hill to build your house on?

dilbert dogbert said...

The whole lot has to be raised.

Rob Dawg said...

> a pond and use the dirt for a hill

You mean a gator basin and turtle mound? ;)

LBD said...

Lol! I didn't think of gators.

Cinco-X said...

If you built a mound, you'd probably be required to pay put in a retention pond... In fact, you probably need to put in retention pond anyway, especially for larger developments and commercial buildings...

Unknown said...

also, if the water doesn't flow then you have a nice mosquito breeding ground and the stagnant water will smell terrible as the anaerobic bacteria take hold.

Unknown said...

Totally legal to dig a hole, but you can't increase flow or concentrate what was sheet flow across the property line.
