First from New Mexico!🏜
Second from New Mexico. Npoic/mudbiker had his house destroyed by the fires in California.
Wow sorry to hear that.
Passed a forest fire west of Flagstaff yesterday. Lots of distruction this year. 😕
Wow. I get he won't bother dawg any more.
SereiouslY awful.
Anybody else?
Brevard county is preparing for a bunch of P Rs being brought over here bt their relatives.
I tell you,.neXT Canada will invade.
Good Morning ☀️
Canada does every winter to the South West. They have already started.
Dawg's house ok?
Edinburgh Castle. Returning tomorrow. No fires near any of our properties. Too bad about nPoic. Pardon if that's the extent of my sympathies. Someone check in with Tom Stone.
POIC's home is gone, 2 listings up in smoke ( The people got out OK), Several friends don't know if their houses are standing and several co workers have lost their homes.
Sonoma County was overdue for a big fire, it's a tragedy forseen by many.
Ya...I wuz gonna ask about Tom
Oh! There you are... Everything okay?
Is it too early to blame eco warrior forest management obstructions?
Dawg, blame the drought, the wet winter and not enough budget.
No internet or cable at my home, no estimate of when repairs will be done.
Air quality is bad.
And neighborhoods are just gone, ones I know well.
Ashes, whole neighborhoods are nothing but ashes and fire season isn't over by a long shot.
If you think this is bad, see what happens with a 6.8 on the Rogers Creek/Hayward fault, or when Marin County catches fire.
Interesting times.
Time to get back to work!
We have a room in the turret of our hotel.
After the ash settles there needs to be new ways not just more of the same. 200 foot brush clearance would have made no difference for instance.
I'm so sorry Tom. It's still going on, isn't it? It looks worse than hurricane destruction. My destroyed house had walls, part of a roof and a working toilet. And I complained about a weensy roof leak this time around.
Dawg, if you had all the money you needed, what could be done?
NASA has controlled burns. Only once it got a bit out of had. Also grass fires, which get a little out of hand.
But not like that. You can't do controlled burns with all those houses.
Sorry to hear of all the damage, loss of lives and missing. Hope all calms down, much is learned and changes come. Kind of disconnected with no TV most of the time.
One thing I am wondering about all of the damage and destruction to the houses: Did they have wood shake roofs or something? I'm wondering why so many of them caught fire from flying embers. If they were in areas not thought of as fire danger areas, they have had a lot of combustible material exposed.
I think insurance companies killed real wood roof years ago. I know they did in Colorado in the 90's.
The insurance companies definitely killed off wood shake roofs in fire areas.
I'm not sure if those residential areas that were wiped out were considered to be at risk of wildfire. They appear to be in the flats, not on hillsides or in canyons. And not a lot of brush nearby.
I almost didn't close on the sale of my house in Colordao far away from the mountain fires due to having a wood shake roof. I don't think they consider location any more.
Well, what kind of roof did.they have?
I'd want concrete or clay tiles. And granite sides, not kitchens. I guess cinder block s are bad for earthquakes. Surely there is fireproof siding?
And everything inside went too?
Just a slab and rubble.
Granite counter tops burn? Bathtubs and toilets burn? Stove's innards burn? Everything inside made of cardboard?
You all coming to Florida, along with the Puerto Ricans? You know when a hurricane is coming.
Corning ware burn, made to withstand the bottom of spacecraft comiNG in at speed?
Steel pots?
Porcelain burn?
Just how hot were these fires?
Asphalt is just the heaviest hydrocarbons in oil. It'll burn too
I saw a new wood shingle roof being put in less than 10 years ago here in MA. Wood shingle are cut, whereas shakes are split
Lol... Yes, but you might get stucco
Little if any of that is useful after a fire like that.
CorningWare gets smashed when the roof collapses. Steel pans warp...
Porcelain is fragile
I know that, I just think it's weird. Where are these steel pans warped or not?
Some big pieces?
How about someone inventing a spray for squirting on the dry grass to prevent the top couple of layers from burning. . . Before the fire starts or course
Good Morning!
The problem is fire burns faster creating more heat because of the wind and low moisture content of the materials. Just like pumping air into a blast furnace. First metal to melt is probably aluminum. Glass, pot metal even steel. Not much survives. There are better building materials but cost prohibitive. Sounds funny with Kali prices.
Ahhh. Kali-cans care more about looks and status than safety and preserving yous stuff. Here you get some status from having Dade county certified windows and roll down shutteRs
and hurricane garage doors. As well as generators, even camp stoves and of course strong roofs. There are few fires here, even though we have burnable grass. Palmetto start showing green withint a week or 2 after the fire.
Small fires of a few acres. Yes.
Aluminum alloys often contain magnesium which itself is flammable. Trailer fires are SCARY!!!
Wow... Reddit-HCN is dead!
Kali can get years of dry grass and scrub that explodes when it burns. Here you would not believe your eyes how fast a grass fire wil light and burn. Add wind to any and it goes crazy. I don't think sprinklers would be effective unless you drown the house to the point of water damage. Pick your poison. I don't think the advancements in materials will be very effective as much as a fire break/controlled burn. Here public housing are building cement tornado shelter in a central bathroom. Fire kills the air and the heat how would one epuip it to survive an extreme fire I'm not sure IMO.
Maybe people shouldn't live there
Maybe people shouldn't live here!!!
Wasn't it run by poic? Didn't his house burn down? This,my friend, is mean.
I hope Josap and outside come over
And lots more
Some of my neighboRs put in a cinder bock safe room. We put 3/4 foot plywood bolted to dry wall with 2 by 4s twice as close to each other than required by code, same with ceiling. The other side was a bathroom shower with concrete green oard. ( not green, but tough) covered tiles. That closet survived hurricane Andrew without the embellishments so I think it is pretty safe.
I think Reddit was Black Halo not POIC.
Ok, but I distinctly remember it beING poic
No... Reddit-hcn is run by Black Halo... Mudville is run by npoic, and last I saw it was still up and running. Please don't accuse me of things I haven't done.
Nope... He runs muddy economist
Back in the USSA! JFK past customs.
Yay
Lots of smoke from the Anaheim fire here in... Los Angeles!
The l pictures look just awful, Dawg. The was a Picture of a P R guy who had been staying at a kali hotel, outside it, watching it burn down. Horrible
Waiting for baggage. Still an hour to escape the GS as sm_refugee calls it. I could smell the smoke in the airplane. Faint but definite.
5 mins LA traffic; more cars than ten days in Scotland.
LA, a good place to be from. 🚗
Seven lanes in both directions and 20 mph.
How ever looking good in that Lamborghini!
Welcome back! 🤠
