New Pict Carving Discovered

From Smithsonian:
Construction on a road link in Perth, Scotland, came to an abrupt halt recently after workers hit upon an unusual archaeological find: a Pictish stone engraved with a large-nosed, weapon-wielding warrior.
As Alison Campsie reports for The Scotsman, archaeologists who were called in to examine the relic believe that it is around 1,500 years old. The carving shows a figure who appears to be clad in a cloak and shoes. He clutches a spear in one hand and what appears to be a club or a staff in the other. The spear is consistent with weapons used during the mid-first millennium A.D., according to Campsie.

 -----

Fascinating what people leave behind.  In the future blog posts will be as mysterious.

I really can't see the nose and weapon. Can see legs. Cow nice.

The top is the damaged new discovery and does not photograph well. The bottom in my picture with photoshopped enhancements.

Last night was interesting. John Marcieri, New West Symphony, Davis Gaines, CLU Women's Chorus, Gay Men's Cohrus of LA. Marcieri was a protege of Bernstein and is touring with a collection of his lesser known (theatrical) but important works in celebration of the anniversary of Bernstein's birth.

My dil sings in a chorus and I got to hear her singing unDer her uke playing and it was wonderful.

Hey Liz come over to the Muddy side. It has a reply function that is missing on this blog. Maybe the dawg can add one?
The interesting daughter just had an MRI that showed her pituitary gland cancer to be gone. Thank Glod for this good result. Heath insurance is eating all her income. Getting cheaper Obamacare is a nightmare. She would have to start working part time to qualify. Partner is working 6 days a week to keep them somewhat solvent. We have to make contributions too. She is the daughter born with a storm cloud over her head and it never lets up.

Is Mary there?

nPOIC also banned me from muddy for... get this. Not violating retroactive rules against whining. Then I got banned from Reddit for complaining that he was treating me poorly there. Not a recommended social environment.

Liz, No Mary but josap is. She was doing the Camino in Spain but wore out her knee and now just being a tourist.
Best

Are you banned in Boston too?

Lawyerliz said...

Is that a race?

I miss Josap.

Busy few days digging a trench and laying cable for power to my shed-pool house.
All done and working. Back to the big shed and rearrange everything and build a welding table. Work at not having a job. November and still Kali weather. :)

I went to Cow Piley SLO back in the day when they taught us engineering students to use all the machine shop tools. Been thinking of getting a small metal lathe and a welding rig. Maybe maybe not. Don't have any projects for them but would make the shop almost complete.

Rob Dawg said...

Trying to decide between a plasma or laser table.

Lawyerliz said...

You want them just to have them, like women with shoes
Only greasier.

Lawyerliz said...

No opinions on tax bill?

I'll bet it doesn't pass.

Lawyerliz said...

What's a plasma table? Something to do with cutting stuff?

Lawyerliz said...

Found a Clan map of the Picts. The names are very familiar American names. Suggests the Picts never really went away

Rob Dawg said...

Yes cutting stuff like up to 1/4 inch steel. The process is the reverse of welding.

Rob Dawg said...

Yes, in truth the modern day Scots are mostly Pict. They joined often to fight the romans. Thus hadrian’s wall. After so much intermingling one people.

Lawyerliz said...

But their nifty engravings aND architecture went away.

LBD said...

DD and RD, I love my new plasma cutter, I might get a new mig 220V to go with the 110V/140 amp. Next is checking out the old TIG welder, the HF seems to be off. Found a crazy simple dent puller I am replicating. Tack welding rod to a dent, cut it off and use a pop rivet gun with a spacer to pull. I has amazing pulling power, boarder line to much. Finishing a arrow art project, pic when finished.

Hack of all Trades Master of None! :)

LBD said...

Tax Bill? Reshuffle the deck and probably will lose even with little income anymore.

Lawyerliz said...

You want things to stay they are?

LBD said...

No, I want all Americans to share in the Dream and pay taxes. I don't care how little you make and where it comes from. Scale it from 1% to 15% no deductions.

Lawyerliz said...

Ok. Won't happen, of it did th ex loopholes would start again right away.

Roofer came out to give an estimate. Yay.

Re: Liz and the tax bill
The purpose of the bill is to give the president a "WIN". Back in the day of President Ford, WIN stood for "Wilbur is Naughty". After Wilbur Mills and Fanny Foxy were found in the DC tide pool. Just joking. It stood for Whip Inflation Now.
The bill will give me a small bit of extra money that I won't even notice. WhoRaw!!!
The tax breaks are for corps and other types of businesses. Interesting that the big corps are sitting on piles of money and the economy is doing OK. Seems we are at full employment so what is the big crisis the bill will solve?

Lawyerliz said...

None.

Rob Dawg said...

Tax bill solely serves to cut a few rungs from the ladder of socioeconomic mobility. The Dawg family is in the crosshairs. DD is correct that the result will be about the possible rather than what is right.

Lawyerliz said...

Only thing I like is full deductibility first year for improvements.

Rob Dawg said...

The housing “shortage” could be cured with tax policy. Accelerate depreciation and/or establish a penalty for idle dwellings.

dilbert dogbert said...

Re: Housing Shortage.
Hard to change some of the zoning laws and overcome local resistance to higher density. Aint no way Atherton, Menlo Park or Los Gatos residents will go for "Low Income" housing. Not even sure it would be allowed in East Palo Alto. Back in the day the wrong side of hwy 101 was reserved for the blacks and browns.

EngineerJim said...

I don't see how the tax bill passes. No Dems will vote for it, and the Repubs don't have the votes by themselves.
As far as I can tell, the only way it passes is if there is a "deal' to pass something like DACA along with the tax bill.
Trump is always claiming he knows how to deal. Let's see if he does.

LBD said...

Making a business deal is different then making a dishonest political deal. No matter what it won't be fair.

Lawyerliz said...

Me neither. Oh, what will the rich people do?

Lawyerliz said...

The roofer came out!

Lawyerliz said...

It was Whip InfLatin Now.
Boy, that didn't work .

LBD said...

The Rich all the way down to the hair cutter at home to the lawn guy who deals in cash. They will find a way around and exploit the system, even flat out cheat. So IMO the honest people lose.

LBD said...

Steel roof?

EngineerJim said...

I personally don't much care whether the tax bill passes or not.
From what I can tell, it would be about neutral as far as my own taxes are concerned.
It would be nice to have a simpler tax code where you don't have to keep track of a bunch of deductions, but maybe we can't have nice things. So be it.

Lawyerliz said...

The price was acceptable.
They might be able to start in January!
The guy said roofers are poaching each others' workers. This is over full employment with roofers. He said they are being paid quite well.

Lawyerliz said...

We considered it, but we suspect the salt air wouldn't be kind. Also, it would clash with the style of the house.

Lawyerliz said...

Just don't want the really rich to hog even more.

Lawyerliz said...

I'm happy that the roof guys are being paid decently, even if we have to pay a bit more.

Lawyerliz said...

Headline says 100 accuse 40 politicians in 20 states.

Lawyerliz said...

And CHARLIE ROSE accused, and does not deny. I liked his interviews and he looked distinguished. Guess that means nothing.

Lawyerliz said...

Perhaps we should start the pariah network? For those. Who have something to say, but can't be trusted sexually.

Lawyerliz said...

Roofers in Brevard make 31k a year. Foreman more. Almost livable here where it's cheap.

LBD said...

Good Morning!

$31K good? $31k/50 weeks/60 hours a week equals $10.33 HR, Then taxes. Not my idea of good with risks involved. My guess cheap import labor drives the wage down. How much free government assistance do they qualify for with a family?

Get a copy of their workman's comp policy. Many don't have any especially with an import crews.

Salt air may be a problem there I didn't consider. Do you see any around?

Cinco-X said...

Bill Clinton couldn't be trusted with your family dog, but women seem to adore him. Explain yourselves

Lawyerliz said...

A few metal roofs. The company has workman's comp. FLordia has no income tax.
They don't wrk 60 hours a week. The guys I saw were all young caucasians. Couldn't work that long in the heat. No import labor I could see, I think their wages will continue to go up. In Palm Beach County it's 34k. Shingle manufacturers are going wild, raising prices like made.

Lawyerliz said...

Like mad. They will only hold the estimate 2 weeks. I intend to give them a tip in the end.

Don't you understand? I was watching. No Mexicans, could have been some Cubans, who are all Americans by this time. No blacks. The ones we saw looked like german or Irish descendents

Lawyerliz said...

They leave about 4.

Lawyerliz said...

Our roofer says they all poach from each other, not an atmosphere for low wages

LBD said...

Looks like according to the BLS Florida is the about the bottom of the pay scale for roofers. Even Nebraska is at $42K. Kali at around $51K and New York at about $63K. So that doesn't sound like a shortage driven labor market. IMO

I am Having trouble seeing White roofers and low wages. A roofing company we used in Colorado told us that they could get a crew of white guys but they would charge more and it would take much longer to finish the job.

Hi everyone. Glad to see you.
Short up date, we got to Spain on September 5th, walked half of the Camino de Santiago (250 miles)before my knee completely gave out. Pulled ligaments/tendons. Hurt like hell. Stopped walking in Leon and became tourists. Just over a month walking and the rest wandering by train from place to place. Will leave for home on the 28th. What a long, strange trip it's been. We have had a great time.

Lawyerliz said...

Food poisoning? One of those you know you won’t die but wonder if that is worth it outcomes. Made calamari sticks last night while a temporary bachelor. 1/4 inch strips egg dip then panko less than a minute fried. Delicious.

Rob Dawg said...

I bought a bunch of “stuff” on 11/11 from AliExpress. Cheap little 2-5 dollar items but being poor and needing nothing that’s the way it works.

Rob Dawg said...

Before HCN blew up I loved hearing Jo’s stories of her hardening for the big walk. Great the she got 250 miles in. Sad she couldn’t finish. Everyone should applaud the accomplishment.

josap said...

I did ok. After going over the mountain, it sort of got easier. After the first few weeks, it all got easier because I was in really good shape. 12 miles a day, up and down steep, long hills was easy.

On the Camino, not finishing is not failing. It is hard to explain, it's about walking. You don't know just where or when you will find lunch. No clue where you will sleep. Not sure how many miles you will walk.

But everyone is walking in the same direction. :-)

And going over the mountain was hard.

Such a cheap house for poor dawg.
Fires completely out??

Rob Dawg said...

All Western fires are contained. Cinco can attest to the extreme modestness of the Dawghaus. No basement. No second story. Just a tiny tract home. At least your have air conditioning.

We replaced the faded furniture in the living room with a thrift store trio. The old stuff couldn’t even get a nibble on Craigslist for free. Off to the dump with the trailer behind the tires old expedition. A half mile from Home on the way back a funny grinding noise. The ball socket had pulled from the receiver socket. The hitch pin and clevis had both worked loose. Could have been exciting if I didn’t catch it. Since you will ask. Three piece couch love and seat for $175.

Lawyerliz said...

Did your wife go with you?

LBD said...

We recently got a reclining leather love seat. I can't stay awake, it is so comfy. Wife picked it out, Cheaper then a race car.

Rob Dawg said...

Mrs Dawg picked the “new” furniture. All I did was catch the hint and say yes. To the dump, actually recycling hub, I got a thumbs up from the Tech for backing up the trailer 150 feet to the perfect spot in one try. I have no idea how the pin worked loose.

Lawyerliz said...

What's a clevis?

Rob Dawg said...

clev·is

noun
a U-shaped or forked metal connector within which another part can be fastened by means of a bolt or pin passing through the ends of the connector.

My furniture is all 25 years old bought with hurricane money. It was very high quality expensive and.very comfy. The antiques are more than 100 years old. My mom's bedroom furniture is about 75. We get good quality and expensive and keep it forever
The hub wants to buy cheap furniture. I restrain him.

Lawyerliz said...

Cheap and ugly.

Rob Dawg said...

The “new” living room could easily be 25 years old. Our kids have no attachment to stuff. It probably started with the Cuspers and gap generations but has truly taken hold with the now twenty somethings.
