Fire Replacement

Lots from the Thomas Fire are starting to come on the market.  The "homeowners" aren't interested in rebuilding.  Hardly surprising.

Is losing $8b/day a lot?

Lawyerliz said...

Me neither. We waited before rebuilding after Andrew. I don't think they should to encourage rebuilding even. Any new insurance information?

Lawyerliz said...

I think so

Rob Dawg said...

We need to see what get built. I would be surprised if the city doesn’t allow McMansions for the tax revenue.

Rob Dawg said...

Adding citizen status to the 2020 census. Who has standing to object? That sounds flippant but think about it.

Supply and demand should dictate lot prices go down, but this Kali, so who knows?

Lawyerliz said...

Non citizens? People was got denied voting last time?

LBD said...

They are not making any more Kali dirt. After a few bite then the rush will be on.

Facebook/Faceplant, New Frontiers with new problems found. It's not like they need all that info for memories. LOL!

I think the census should ask about citizenship because it effects hand outs. Time to tighten up leaks in the systems.

For a few million dollars you can replicate Facebook without the back room nonsense. It would probably be “profitable” without the data harvesting. Where are the white knights?

Good Morning!

Nice RV spot, a cool 2.5MM Prevost would fit in and the property tax would fill the hole. Fire or flood coming just drive it away. The neighbors would cry Trailer Park Trash! ;)

Lawyerliz said...

A provost is a super rv?

Lawyerliz said...

I disagree because we really do want to know how many people are. G
Getting the rugs cleaned to day if they ever show up.

Lawyerliz said...

And a good mornong to every one.

Lawyerliz said...

The hub, I fear will get used to all the tidyness. Gotta get stuff off of the flood before cleaning it

Lawyerliz said...

Has you house insur az me gone up? Rob?? Anybody. Afraid to ask

LBD said...

Yes Top of the line used by stars as tour buses. They start at $1.5MM.

Rob Dawg said...

No increase yet but I am sure it will be substantial.

Well, the constitution NEVER counted "citizens".

Initially, it was all free persons, 3/5 slaves, and only excluded "non-taxed Indians".

With the 14th Amendment, that became: (section 2):

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed

Note: At the time, only males age 21 and up could vote. But, the census specifically counts "persons", so as to include women and children.

So, technically any "person" would have standing, (except non-taxed Indians), if making an argument based on the Constitution, which mandates the census.

LBD said...

The constitution seems to perverted all the time for some groups advantage. My position is any American citizen legal voter and their children should be recognized and the info used to promote their status. IMO.

Rob Dawg said...

My position is that nationality and residency status is in the same bucket as ethnicity and gender and age all of which are not necessary for the purposes of apportionment. There is no ground where you can call some of those questions acceptable and some not.

Rob Dawg said...

Excluding Indians not taxed...

This one I've never gotten straight. Were there taxed Indians? Were they not counted for just Representation but still taxed? Damn those vague Founding Fathers.

Firemane said...

Not sure where it is spelled out, but pretty sure this is tied up with the creation of reservations. If you are living on a reservation, you are not subject to normal Federal tax laws.

But, if you are NOT living on a reservation, you would be, regardless of heritage. While not a perfect analogy, reservations are treated 'almost' like little mini-countries inside of the US. Which is why casinos are prevalent, (bypassing lots of state and Federal laws preventing gambling institutions).

While I can appreciate how one might be of the "opinion" that the census "should" only count citizens - that is very clearly NOT what the Constitution says - nor any indication of that being the intent.

In point of fact, at any given point in time there have been thousands to millions of non-citizen RESIDENTS (legal) that are counted in the census -- and though not allowed to vote, the representatives elected to those regions are "supposed" to be representing ***every person*** -- not just who voted for them.

The concept is one of representing RESIDENTS. This is one reason out-of-state students can register to vote LOCALLY.

This is also one reason missionaries are NOT counted in the census, (which is a long-standing gripe of the Mormons, since at times this reality has cost them a seat in the house).

And while the impact on political parties is obvious -- there is no practical purpose for intentionally attempting to under count the actual number of people living in an area. "Pretending" there are a million fewer people living somewhere is NOT going to change the amount of water, electricity, schools, or roads needed to adequately serve the population.

Nice to want to follow the law of the constitution but our government and politicians have decided as to what to ignore or enforce. So the constitution has become a suggestion guide more then a group of laws.

I fail to see what being an American means anymore except we have to cater to illegals and pay taxes. Seriously what benefit does an American citizen have? Maybe we should should have free immigration to the countries who will let us become citizens of their country and we retain dual citizenship. I might like to have an instant exit when all hell cuts loose. America 2.0 sucks.

Census identification Citizen v resident of any status would crystallize the issue of illegal immigration. That’s why the left is afraid of it.

Lawyerliz said...

Indians weren't citizens for quite a while, so the weren't taxed. Imho

Lawyerliz said...

Yep the illegals drink the water walk on the sidewalks and poop in the sewage, so should be counted.

Lawyerliz said...

Sure. Hahahahehehe. By the way, what does it mean???

I've never really understood the red/blue divide on mexican immigrants. If team red weren't working so hard to keep them out, then I see a ton of cultural similarities between the rural, white, christian conservatives and traditional mexican family values. Team blue may end up working very hard to bring citizen status to a population that one generation from now doesn't end up voting for them.

LBD said...

Forty years and I have never seen either party enforce the immigration laws to a logical extent. Promises, promises and nothing done but a little show with zero results. Trump got elected because he did address it head on. Remember The Republicans didn't want him so it is hard to call it a Red or blue thing. Reagan the great even screwed us with amnesty and where did that go? The problem is WE and our government have grown a huge problem. If they had done the right thing and controlled who came in to the country and kicked the undesirables out we would have a fair and not abused mess we have today. IMO when it comes to free government money both parties, rural, city folks are all for socialism. Beliefs end when there is free money on the table.

Immigrants legal and illegal reduce wages, which economists seem to think is a good thing.

I dont

California’s abysmal educational outcomes can be directly attributed to finding millions of unexpected unprepared kids showing up without having a decade of their parents contributing to the tax base.

Unknown said...

I'm not sure how much poor people put into the tax base, legal or not.

LBD said...

I think this shows catering and the result in the drag on education and the rewards for failure programs. I said before I left Kali in the late 70's that a Hispanic could be born and raised in LA and never learn English.

Poor people who float through life are an insane drag on the country and extract many times more then they ever contribute. Start with $150-$250K spent on a preschool to grade 12 education. A debt they never pay. Makes student loans look small. IMO

Austin just had to pay for it's own bullet proof vests because it did not qualify for state funding due to its status as a sanctuary city.

LBD said...

IMO all cities and counties should be able to pay for bullet proof vests to begin with. The problem is to cry and get it just like welfare. They need to drop the sanctuary city BS as it is not American. Laws are not selective and their actions should have consequences.

Rob Dawg said...

Anyone stop to think part of the reason Austin needs vests is because it is a sanctuary city?

Lawyerliz said...

Mexicans commit more crimes than Cubans?
I have a suspicion that Mexicans are resented because once this, the whole southwest, was THEIR country. actually a bunch of tribes and a few Spanish descendents.

Rob Dawg said...

The difference is that Cubans are prepared to come to the Us and the Mexicans prepare for bringing Mexico here.

LBD said...

LL who should we resent, our forefathers stole the whole country. The where a bunch assholes. Now we are a bunch of wimps allowing our country to be invaded. If every country gave back what it took then the world would have to go back to the stone age. Mexicans do not want to be American, they want to take far more then they contribute. The majority live by a poor mans justification to steal as it will be repaid by insurance and nobody really loses. They see Americans as rich and it doesn't hurt them. I have seen it and understand it.

Lawyerliz said...

The rest of the people we stole from were not able to steal it back .m

Good Morning!

More clouds and patches of light rain. At least it isn't snow. :)

Nice country you had there, to bad you gave it away.

Firemane said...

1) Lumping everyone from ANY country together in one tight package is idiocy. There are lazy American and lazy Mexicans and lazy Asians. And there are hard working examples of EVERY race and nationality.

2) My perception and experience here in NC is that Mexicans (as a group) are more hard working, more motivated, more attuned to the concept of achievement through effort than (as a group) the pampered, privileged next generation of xbox, ipad, iphone wielding layabout white teens who graduate HS without ever holding a summer job, and only have good grades because of helicopter parents berating teachers into inflating grades their kids are incapable of earning thru merit.

3) My belief is that the "Great America" that Trump so much wants to return to was great BECAUSE of immigrants, who in overwhelming numbers came to America BECAUSE we preached the notion that every person could flourish based on the sweat of their brow, the depth of their intellect and the quality of their character.

American did not become great because we only allowed doctors and engineers and financially successful people in. It became great because we said to the world, come here and you can BECOME a Doctor or Engineer or Business owner if you are willing to work for it.

Our great eastern cities were built on the backs of Irish and Italian labor. Our western railroads were built on the backs of those same immigrants and added in Chinese immigrants.

And though prejudice and maltreatment of people not "like us" (whomever the "us" might be in a given moment), is also an ugly part of our history - the basic notion that action is far more important than appearance has won out for the most part.

The sad part for me is that too many Americans today don't get the fact that the desire to detach from England to begin with was in large part to RID OURSELVES of the notion that where you happened to be born was in some mystical way the single determining factor in what you could become. American exceptionalism was based on the very odd concept that where you are born should NOT matter.

Lawyerliz said...

Yep, America is An idea, not a place. Most of Indian die off was disease not meanness, but the Na,is has nothing onus as to meanness. Cubans has a few years of difficulties, but now they fit right in. Last I heard Miami was getting Brazilians, and lots of people from The Carribean islands who do great. A lot of people are not so approving of Haitians but they are admiring of their hard work.
Hence I think you CAlipersons are
Mad because the immigration is taking their own country back. Part of the problem is the hardships worked on Mexico by the American invasion
Manifest Destiny indeed.

Lawyerliz said...

Promote their status? Poor white trash too?

Lawyerliz said...

LBD said...

I am not mad. Sad and kind of laughing at what has happened. The world has never played nice and probably never will.

I am talking about the illegal Mexican and not the upstanding Mexican American from the past generations. Lots of lazy people in our country, deal with them all the time. Some are even educated. Given the choice of hard work or welfare it becomes an obvious choice. Just hanging out and watching Kali start to collapse.

Unknown said...

Thank you Firemane, you said it better than I would have. I disagree with the basic premise that immigrants are bad, but couldn't take the time to form a coherent argument.

Lawyerliz said...

Can't illegals be outstanding?

LBD said...

If some illegals where outstanding I doubt they would chose an illegal path to get here.

Life in Mexico is about stealing for many as part of survival. Why not go to where the hunting is better. Bribes to public officials has long been an acceptable practice in Mexico. I think living in Kali taught me a lot and watched it in action. I doubt much has changed or even gotten worse. They brought it to Denver before I left. Enjoy the future it will be yours, good luck.

Firemane speaks many truths.

Lumping everyone from ANY country together in one tight package is idiocy.

I would expand:

Lumping everyone from ANY [race/religion/origin] together in one tight package is idiocy.

That's clearly what he meant but I thought it need saying out loud.

Rob Dawg said...

More Firemane:

than (as a group) the pampered, privileged next generation of xbox, ipad, iphone wielding layabout white teens who graduate HS without ever holding a summer job

My kids were a mix. The last baby bird not quite out of the nest never held a HS job but summers were stuffed with volunteer and personal advancement whilst school years were so filled with plus classes that she came a few credits short of an Associates after a year in Community College. I'm good with that kind of pampering. She starts at Target on Saturday. She starts about three notches higher than a typical new hire and probably four higher than a "no experience" kid.

Rob Dawg said...

The problem is not the immigration but the response. We see it in Western Europe and see it in America with our responses to transgressions. Ask Steinly.
