I'll go first. Your posts kill me. Leave it to Beaver? Too funny. The occational sci-fi references are good too. Keep 'em comin'!

Are you interested in doing a post comparing our current situation to the RE market of the '90's? We bitter GenXers can remember leaving school to a crappy job market and a near impossibility to buy a home... Do you see any similarities?

Robert,

I was wondering if you could clue me into your info regarding a defense of the exurbs from the Smart Growthers. I remember you discussing the energy consumption patterns and various other info and I find myself in a position having to defend exurban New Jersey from smartgrowthers. I am looking for ammo, if you can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Occassional sci-fi references?!? Cripes you might as well call me Corwin until I can send for Helva to take me back the Wunderland where I left my own General #4 hull before the Mule finds it and uses it to defeat the Lensmen.

Metro, I've got a lot here, more in archives but first search this blog and go to publicpurpose.com and ti.org as a start.

While you are at end of next week, could you please note all the winning lottery numbers, and maybe bring back
some stock prices?

Buy General Services stock. The one who's motto is "We also walk dogs."

Robert,

I guess I have some reading up to do here on why the exurbs need to be defended from the Smart Growthers.

In the meantime, would you be willing to explain how your last name is pronounced (I'm curious as to how the accent mark affects it)?

Rob Dawg said...

Robert Coté is pronounced co-Tay. The anglisized version Cote is pronounced hard c long e. I'm not picky as long as I'm not called late for dinner.

As you get up to speed you'll encounter a number of unusual acronyms. I invented many of them. From http://patrick.net/wp/?p=63

Coté-isms: Satirical acronyms or terms coined and/or popularized by the talented Robert Coté. Targeted squarely at hypocritical NIMBYists and self-serving left-leaning activists with an anti-development and/or anti-automobile ideological agenda. This agenda is often (mis-)represented to the public as environmentalism or as a “cure” for urban sprawl and/or foreign oil dependence.

SmUG = Smart Urban Growth
SmUGLers = Smart Urban Growth Lovers
NUTS = New Urbanist Transit Supporter
TODLers = Transit Only Development Lovers
FOAMers = Forces Of Anti-Mobility
TROGlodytes = Transit Only Groupies
PEVERT = Promoting Exclusion of Vehicles Except Regional Transit
OPAC = Obsolete Pre-Automotive Cities (credit Prog JF Scott)
CLODs = Chicken-Little Oil Depletionists
TPVs = Transit Potemkin Villages
NURB = New Urbanism

“wishing price” : Robert’s tongue-in-cheek response to homedebtor’s absurd asking prices.
“under house arrest” : Robert’s tongue-in-cheek description for FBs holding McAlbatrosses they cannot sell for wishing price.
“Housing Pustule”: It isn’t a “bubble.” Bubbles are cute , they float along on lasy summer breezes. Little children, green lawns. Bubble baths, exotic models, smooth skin. No, this is a housing pustule and it is time we call it that.

The pustule has ruptured.
The puss is oozing.
The festering boil has necrotized.
The canker has ulcerated.

I'm not that huge on sci-fi, but Blade Runner is also one of my all-time favorite movies (I just looked at your profile). Along with the first Matrix movie. And I'm not even a big Keanu Reeves fan, but the Matrix broke new cinematographic ground.

Anybody seen "Children of Men" yet? I haven't but heard it's good.

Rob Dawg said...

Keanu Reeves was great in "Johnny Mnemonic." We'll all have wetware in a few years. I can't wait. I've been spiffing up the site as you can probably see. Mostly as an experiment for the experience. Thanks for reminding me to include more on the profile. I'm not that interesting so I might as well play an interesting person in the blogosphere. ;-)

I would prefer my pay in tolivers, please. I no longer think some of the social commentary is inaccurate or as funny as I used too- just as it is beginning to hurt.

I am beginning to think the real estate bottom may be gradually heaving into sight- about a 25% haircut in phoenix- back to 2004...one can almost squeeze out breakeven on a few of the properties here if you can find a renter...50k in properties for sale though!!!

Soon Mortgage Hawk v2 will seek financing from the Crimson Permanent Assurance, and set sail on the seas of high finance!!!

After just reading a few of the acronyms, I'm beginning to get a picture of what you're talking about...

In theory, I kind of enjoy the Utopian idea of being able to walk to work or to the grocery. But, I still want a car, I want it to be garaged, and I don't want to hear cars driving by all the time or drunk people out on the sidewalk.

Ah segfault;
You begin to understand the Cotean Nodaltopia.

These are long, complex and dense with concepts that take a long time to master. Good luck, I'm here to help. Don't make me post my sprawl opus.

I can see both sides of the issue. I spent 30 years living in Manhattan, and 7 in suburban NorCal. I really like not HAVING to always jump in my car every time I want to mail a letter or grab a quart of milk. I also like being able to buy a week's worth of groceries at one time, load them into my trunk, and drive home with them. Living where I do, in an older suburb that has a real town center, is the best of both worlds.

Rob Dawg said...

I've no problem with the market or marketplace of ideas but smartgrowth is different. SmUGLERS see a neighborhood where people have invested their lives and treasure thus exhibiting revealed preference and say; "That's wrong, I know better and if we take their money and change their lives my vision can be realised."

I just bought my first house. It's new, I got it for a lower price than others were selling for in that neighborhood because a buyer dropped out.

They were desperate, so they gave me his price. I'm pretty happy. Now if I can only get a few of my business investments to go up I'd be able to kick back a little (not that I would want to).

JimBobJoeBobJim,
I'm a fellow bitter gen-X-er who also find the Y's spoiled and superficial as hell and lacking any ability to come up with anything resembling a new idea (hence, CS annoyance factor) and would find a generational generality discussion interesting as well.
