If I were building from scratch on the hillsides around here I would not bother tying to the grid. Solar electric. Solar pool heating. Heat pump and a propane tank for the 5% demand peaks and cooking. A purist could go all solar + batteries.
Those new solar screen cells are "Bi-enhanced." No wonder everyone is so excited.
