$2.41? ARRRGHHH!!! Clearly it is important to not be a petroleum producing state.

sm_r on the dull dull dull Reddit HCN notes:

"U.S. ends fiscal 2017 with $666 billion budget deficit "

This is Obama's last budget. He -is- the devil!

Lawyerliz said...

Is that up or down? I forget. Hey, it's not a trillion.

I shudder to think what my house would cost in Kali.

Lawyerliz said...

Production $18.56 trillion. 666 hunh. Actually, not so bad.

LBD said...

Many people in Kali never pay their house off as the gut the equity ATM to stay alive.

Gas here $2.359

Did I mention the expensive twin screw ego boats at Lake Havasu? Some people are making money or they have a large line of credit. Great eye candy and I didn't have to lift a finger. I think the car thing might be worn out of me.

Watching TV this morning showing some of those houses flooded in Houston.
So how do they go about repairing a house that had say 5 feet of water in it ?
Do they just basically rebuild the first floor? How about the load bearing walls?
Or would it be a complete teardown?

Rob Dawg said...

I’ve never heard of a flood tear down. New Chinese drywall bottom four feet and toxic fume new paint smell and good to go.

Cinco-X said...

It's a trick to dry those houses out. IIRC, the vapor barrier is on the outside of the insulation unlike the case up North where it's on the inside. I'd guess the best bet is to rip the drywall or up too the ceiling and replace the insulation and drywall.

EngineerJim said...

>New Chinese drywall bottom four feet

I'm pretty sure that water wicks up the dry wall way above the flood level.
Also in some of those Houston videos, it looks like mold/mildew goes above flood level.

EngineerJim said...

We had a (relatively) minor flood from a supply line break.
The water was at most 3/4 inch in depth. They took out drywall about two feet above the floor.
That's how far the water travels up the drywall in a matter of a few hours.

Rob Dawg said...

Unless your house is made of Cypress wood a flood never gets fixed.

Lawyerliz said...

No. Aghhhhhh. No Chinese drywall.

Rob Dawg said...

I predict that in 10-15 years there will be a huge home improvement industry around replacing contaminated Chinese drywall with expensive Canadian drywall. The Dawghaus suffers no such indignity. The Dawghaus is lath, plaster sheet, brown coat and such.

Lawyerliz said...

We got non Chinese drywall in our Andrew destroyed house. I makes you sick pretty soon.

EngineerJim said...

The nice thing about drywall is you can patch it up and repaint it and you can't tell that it's been redone. At least I can't tell, maybe an expert can tell the difference. Don't know how well lath and plaster can be repaired.

Lawyerliz said...

The Chinese kind.makes you sick

Lawyerliz said...

It's supposed to be better, but I don't know way.

Cinco-X said...

If you get someone experienced with the right skills, tools and raw materials, they can do okay. That's typically not cheap. I think there's a company in Worcester that does repairs and new work.

Lawyerliz said...

I have some pecky cypress paneling which I don't like, but which somehow suits the house. My children keep telling me to paint it or gets rid of it, but I won't.

Rob Dawg said...

You can have it cheap, right or on time. Pick two.

Rob Dawg said...

Good on ya. Too few distinguishing characteristics these days. That said those glass slat crank windows with a negative R value can die any time. We had three from 1962 and are well rid of them.

Lawyerliz said...

I've had houses with them. The cranks break easily
and they are ugly.

Lawyerliz said...

Nothing is on time anyway.

EngineerJim said...

We had a house that was built in the 40's that had hand cranked windows. The windows opened out, they weren't slats. They seemed to last . I don't remember any of them breaking.

Cinco-X said...

jalousie windows

EngineerJim said...

>jalousie windows

Except the windows we had weren't slats, the whole window opened outward.
I don't see any photos on line. Must be too old.

Lawyerliz said...

These were cheeeeep houses. We bought the first one for . . . $22500.00. . Which was cheap even then. Hehehehe.

Lawyerliz said...

In 1972. We sold it for $50k 9 years later.

Lawyerliz said...

The tiny cheap houses went up fantastically before the GreatRecessio, maybe $200k? Then they went down by half or so.

Rob Dawg said...

Houses are expensive because there are too many parasites firmly attached to the process.

Lawyerliz said...

Good night.😀

A shame Mudbiker’s property got treated the way he treats people. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

EngineerJim said...

Yeah, If that happened to me, I don't think I would rebuild there.
Just sell the vacant lot and get what you can for it.
Use the insurance money to pay off the mortgage and buy elsewhere.

Rob Dawg said...

It was a joke in Life According to Garp but seriously people don’t learn and governments enable. If you live on a barrier island you should not get any Federal protection a third time.

Lawyerliz said...

What happened to his property ? Destroyed? If you get good insurance money, it's not too bad. You know, it didn't affect me much because it wasn't my fault in any way.

One office in my bank building got flooded. They were airing it out with fans. My hair dresser had sheets of stuff on the floor
Near the door. Flood
This was after Irma, when we had a very very heavy rain. Could have been a rain band.

Lawyerliz said...

Or, could be Irma filled everything up with water and there was nowhere for the new water to go.

Kitty is on my lap and refuses to get up.

nPOIC lost the entire structure and contents. Even the chimney was burned useless. That’s hot intense. And yes, all his bikes.

Rob Dawg said...

Cat enforced liesure is always a good excuse.

LBD said...

So if the drywall repairs are questionable how would building cement block for the first floor work out. If is is sealed and painted would it restorable for nasty flood water?

Rob Dawg said...

New post.

Oh my. Nothing that I really love was destroyed. In Andrew. I could always buy another book.
