Greeting from Dark Green 'Merika
From the folks at howmuch.net and their always interesting dives into the ACS, American Community Survey.
DD, investing in k-rails and sand bags this winter? Going to be a muddy one. Cool is indeed cool. Especially since El Dorado County participates in Props 60 & 90.
Dawg, We missed by one year the transfer of our property tax from Santa Clara County. Not unhappy as we like Cool and the fine folks here. At least my old house still is prop 13 as is the Donner cabin.
Props 60 & 90 allow us oldsters to transfer our Prop 13 tax basis to a smaller, less expensive house, one time only. The intent is to pry us out of our Prop 13 houses so that them there youngers can buy them and pay the stepped up tax basis. Thus I could move to Cool, CA and bring my obscenely low property taxes with me. Never you mind that my buyers will be paying 6x more to cover the supposed shortfall.
Josap notes by omission something that has changed in the past 30 years or so. Back then it would be “can I bring back anything?” There we’re just special things that were only available by being there. A bottle of port that didn’t export, a chees or a scarf or glass unicorn. Whatever. Now, we go online and expect free fast shipping. In that way the world has gotten smaller in a good way.
If a loan is forgiven then is't it earned income? Just like forgiving mortgage debt? How about the government forgiving a mechanics tool debt after ten years working. Not so crazy IMO.
Actually that was supposed to be taxed. Then they didn't nobody could pay. Then they were supposed to be taxed, again, then screaming then I lost track.
For the -really- old timers: No! Not another "olive oil" fight!
Honestly, food is just booze without alcohol. It deserves almost the same degree of consideration including moderation. Josap is right that olive oil is a "local" product despite the frequent mass collection, blending, adulteration that goes on in the commercial world. And that was the basis of the olive oil war on HCN all that long ago. Quality, quality control and variety. I wouldn't buy olive oil I hadn't researched. Too expensive. too corrupt. Surprisingly Costco ranks high. For bulk that's what we use.
Travel: The best things are those unplanned/unanticipated/unscheduled/unexpected. THAT is why virtual travel will never come close.
Best meal of 2017 was when we stopped on a remote country road to regroup and find a chip shop or a curry takeout if necessary (because we were hungry). This is where we pulled over: http://www.kildrummyinn.co.uk/dining/
Yes the local “tree products” are as good or better than anything else. There are a few exceptions for special instances but citrus, olive, avocado, the few remaining nuts, are all world class. The stone fruits and apples not so much. I will probably bring some Piru honey as a gift for Liz next month.
Pilgrim menus on the Camino were usually very good. Maybe because after a 10 or 12 mile walk I was hungry. Carried my little 12 lb pack for 5 to 6 hours a day. There were days I just couldn't get enough calories.
The vacation part of our trip .... Very good food. We rented apartments and Hubby cooked some as well.
Every day on the Camino was unplanned. Usually we came across a very cool and unexpected treat. Walk into an oak forest, turns into pine as we went up. Around a bend was the Oasis. Looked like Jimmy Buffet left a few days ago and left all his party stuff. A lady had fruits, sandwiches, wine, beer, candy, water. Lots of things. Donations accepted, no prices. Free if you had no extra to spend on treats.
Someone built a library in the woods..... 11th century Abby being restored by volunteers.... Tiny covenant chapel..... Every day something beautiful was offered to us, just because we existed.

Ours is light green. Son is a shade darker, daughter dark green.
We feel of the map, Not Metro and must be welfare income! LOL!
Fell off!
When you said welfare I just assumed you meant “feed off”...
What is the grey color? Unknown?
Gray is not a MSA. 382 in the US. Notice the nicest areas are generally as sm_refugee calls it; escapes from the Great Sewers.
We are a tax welfare state, Thank you for your support. ;)
Come the Great Quake we in California get it all back in one payment.
Right? Right?... Anybody there? Helllo D.C.? Can you hear us?
DisConnected!
Cool is cool with that map.
I think you will get nothing. The big one may be trillions. pfthff.

Miami loses.
Maybe they will give you Puerto Rico. Or overlook a little Mexico conquering.

California could use Baja if only for vacations, gardeners and a near equatorial launch site with engineer approved recreational facilities.
They won't be able to afford it.
Sure you can afford it let me introduce you to our finance department!
10% interest and 4 points?
Vinny “four fingers” Spagnolli will be your loan officer.
The good m Ole days.
It's all about the affordable monthly payment. :)
Last day in Madrid. I've seen all the palaces, museums, cathedrals, ruins, arches, stores I can handle.
We go to Barcelona in the morning. Then 2 days and we go home. I miss my little parrot.
I miss tales of your parrot too.
Bitty Bird and the tales of the patio; shed and fish farm.
Wow, and for me ten days until I’m off to Heaven’s Waiting Room, Central Gulf Coast of Florida.

I dunno things are less precious.
I want my stuff yesterday. Think of the money saved with internet world tour. Times have changed.
I don't want an Internet world tour. I want to see it in meat space before it disappears into a mass of electrons.
If you get tired of the waiting room, you can drive over her and admire my weeds.
Dawg, you know these things. Is Trump proposing to tax forgiven student loans, including VA loans that are forgiven after 10 years work for the VA?

> "...admire my weeds."
That idea has "Merrit."

Bring a contractor with m you.
There are still many things here we can't get online. Small run olive oil. Local wines. We also found quite a few hand made items.
I do have some new types of things to look for online. :-)
Once you give them the candy bowl, you will never get it back.
Nothing like going places really. The feeling can't be duplicated, people you meet, the food and the weather.

RD: Do you like the local olive oil? There was a grower from out around Santa Paula that had some good stuff at the Farmer's Market last summer.
The Kildrummy place looks good!
