Any excuse except the truth

Amgen shakes up R&D staff, 400 jobs to be cut/relocated

|About: Amgen Inc. (AMGN)|By:, SA News Editor
With the aim of improving alignment with functional capabilities, Amgen  plans to restructure its operations, affecting ~400 positions at its Thousand Oaks headquarters. About 100 jobs will be relocated to research hubs in the Boston area and San Francisco and ~50 will go to Tampa, FL where the company is opening a new capability center.
A company spokesperson says a little more than 100 employees in Discovery Research and Translational Sciences will be impacted. The action affects ~8% of Amgen's headquarters staff.

Please.  People are not this stupid.

With the aim of improving the stock price with maximum leadership return , Amgen plans to move its technical operations, affecting ~400 positions at its Thousand Oaks headquarters. About 100 jobs will be relocated to research hubs in the Boston area and San Francisco and ~50 will go to Tampa, FL where the company is opening a new capability center and the other 250 are poof, into the wind.
A company spokesperson says a little more than 100 employees in Discovery Research and Translational Sciences will be impacted. The action affects ~8% of Amgen's headquarters staff directly.  These jobs are however considered "apex" positions and additional hundreds of support positions will be quietly eliminated.  The Chairman/CEO's long personal history in the Greater Boston Area had nothing to do with this decision.

Amgen has been slowly bleeding the TO facility for years, haven't they?
Cost cutting would not seem to be a justification if they are moving jobs to SF, of all places.

Diluting at first via remote acquisition and then the bleeding came later. What's wrong with T.O.? Not a big city and not big city attractive to upper management types. Boston is more expensive not just SF.

Isn't capitalism WONDERFUL?

Rob Dawg said...

I suspect capitalism would be pretty good and look forward to the day when we try it.

Lawyerliz said...

Same as Christianity.

If is were possibile, it would have happened.

Alas.

Just got off work. Lost the battle on the laminate over carpet, getting vinyl floor instead. How do I get laid off? I keep finding more work! LOL!

Rob Dawg said...

Vinyl? How long were you in that coma? Next we will be arguing over Audio Technica tracking angles and whether pop and click suppression is ethical.

The flooring guy made us a fair deal and my boss (wife) doesn't like my idea. I still have a lazer disc machine and my hearing is pretty much shot from race cars. LOL!

Stick market i am thinking.
I'm doing fine except Ford. Even so at worst so far down far less than 2%.

We are heading "up" for Easter dinner on Palm Sunday to the Bay Area where the older kids are now.

I was thinking about what capitalism actually is. Does it include. Crony capitalism? Is it what Ayn Rand described? Does it requite charity. If you got you initial stash from the govt, is what you do with it later poisoned and not count?

Rob Dawg said...

Capitalism most certainly demands charity. The numbers work better. Same with wages. There are myths around Henry Ford's $5/day pay but it bought him the best return from workers. Capitalist economy. Socialist society. Representative democracy. Independent judiciary. Apolitical journalism. Win.

Lawyerliz said...

Ahhh, socialist society.

Lawyerliz said...

You know, I hardly read CR any more. It has got pretty boring.
I was reading to start typing my UU talk on the American Revolution, and the computer broke, as I said before . Hub fiddled with it this morning and says it has to be taken in. Hope you have a nice time with your kids.

LBD said...

Good Morning!

Rain today and play day here. Springs has sprung. :)

To much socialist society for me.

Offering insight into the last recession. No acknowledgement that things like foreclosure rates are not comparable and certainly no understanding of demographics despite years of being corrected.
