Turn Out the Light When You Leave

CKE Restaurants, which owns burger chain Carl’s Jr. and St. Louis-based Hardee’s, is beginning its exit from California in March as it moves its headquarters from Carpinteria to Tennessee.

CKE (NYSE: CKR), founded 60 years ago in Anaheim by Carl Karcher, said 51 employees, including 24 in Carpinteria, opted not to relocate to Tennessee, which will be home to 120 corporate employees, reported the Orange County Register.

Is anyone surprised?

Carpinteria (essentially Santa Barbara) to Tennessee?? I think I would be one of the employees opting not to relocate..

Never liked the fries at Carl's Jr. They taste like cardboard.
Good riddance.

Rob Dawg said...

I like their criscut fries. But man, drip, drip, drip of companies leaving. How will the state survive on just big government, agriculture, tourism and consumer services?

2-3 more feet of snow expected to drop in the local mountains this weekend...wowzer

There's infrastructure rebuild -- like the Oroville dam.

Mike said...

should be some nice inflows from the SNAP ipo..

EngineerJim said...

There's some videos and photos online that show the damage to the Oroville dam spillway and the rebuilding that is taking place. I didn't realize how much damage there was to the spillway by running water through it. Basically about half of the spillway is gone. It will probably take at least a year to rebuild it. In the meantime they are now running water through the turbines and generating power -- good news.

Rob Dawg said...

I was initially gobsmacked that the turbine outlets fouled. Then I calmed down. Just one of those engineering things you plain old cannot know until -after- you break it.

The spillway however... It's still only a cement channel a couple lanes wide. Should take a few weeks and a couple, maybe ten million to over-fix. Sounds like a lot of "padding" in the estimates.

Local precipitation could hardly be made to order better. A mix of light and heavy storms, breaks in between and now a period of warm dry. So far my only complaint is a surprise rain might have washed away the grass killer chemical before it took effect.

The rains have put noxious weed growth into high gear. tough to keep up on a bit less than an acre. It does give me a chance to aggressively trim roses, hedges and the redwood trees. During the drought I was worried about stressing them.

Only 240 more days before the State next reconsiders giving up the emergency drought powers they assumed.

I don't know if the turbine outlets themselves were fouled, however there is a huge amount of debris blocking the channel (the Feather River basically) where water would flow out from the turbines. They are clearing the debris now. The debris is a total of about 1.7 million cubic yards -- moving that will take more than a month.

Another reason they weren't generating power, is because they cut the power lines in the area below the emergency spillway. And the reason they did that is they were concerned about one of the towers falling down due to soil weakening and bringing other towers
down in kind of a domino fashion.

Regarding the spillway itself, the amount of damage is huge, I don't think it will be repaired in a couple of weeks. See the online photos.

Noted. all your observations.

I never understood the worry about a line failing. That happens all the time. Keep generating until the line goes down. TIE balancing is a mature practice.

N.B. I actually remember the Great Northeast Power Outage of 1965. Lived in West Springfield, MA at the time.

Hardees, bleh

Hopefully the upcoming tax reform bill eliminates the federal tax deduction for state income taxes paid. All that does is encourage states like California and NY to misspend at the rest of the country's expense..

Rob Dawg said...

California levees a carbon tax and has the wherewithal to pretend it is a fee and not subject to a vote necessary for a new tax. They won't reduce rates under any threat.

Cost of doing business is no different then the cost of living. The Kali dream is out of control for many including business. Best answer is import more poverty, that will fix it!

Wow Muddy Econ has jumped the shark. How can you guys stand it?

sm_landlord said...

I took a peek at MuddyEcon a bit ago, and nPoic announced that he had finally started deleting a few posts. I don't know if it too late for him to save it or not.

On Carl's: I couldn't care less, haven't eaten there for years. They did used to have a mini-salad-bar that was minimally edible. The service was never very good, and the food was meh.

LBD said...

I just took a look and don't miss it.

Rob Dawg said...

Carl's and the rest are just road calories where you stop to use the restroom and stave off hunger. That said we had Panda Express tonight. Not much of a step up.

EngineerJim said...

MuddyEcon is very slow to load.
It's even slow when you just go in to down vote the usual suspects.

Rob Dawg said...

Lol! It's become a lamestream misleadia aggregator of anti conservatism. You can have any flavor of koolaid as long as it's blue.

Reddit appears to have Yogi and KP under new names.
So far they haven't attacked anyone personally.
It will be interesting to see how long they can hold off.

Carl's before Hardees was much better. They had roast beef sandwich with a chili pepper and a white cheese that I liked.

Took me about a minute to figure out anal_sphincter was KP.

Apparently the EiC of the Voice oF San Diego wrote a piece about what is / is not fake news. His first example he stated was simply sa "mistake", not fake.

A white house pool journalist thinks the Trump team removed a bust of MLK from the oval office, runs with the story, then apologizes when corrected.

Your call -- Fake or Mistake?

p.s.: Russia is without question THE fake news story of 2017.

sm_landlord said...

> Russia is without question THE fake news story of 2017.

It was also an important fake news story of Q4-2016.
You would think that they could find better material.
Or maybe talk about...oh, I don't know....policy or something.

TJandTheBear said...

They have nothing else, and they refuse to acknowledge their own failings.

Rob Dawg said...

You have to remember Russia was "Plan G" or so after A-F were deflected or debunked. IMO the only reason this one is sticking is because you cannot prove a negative. Oh, and Sessions did not lie. He was asked about contact in regards to the election not about general contacts.

Uh oh. Politics raising its ugly head.
I found a couple more house for sale with in a couple miles. Not starter houses.

There is one cheap house nearby.
It I'd very close to busy courtenay Parkway. And a few years ago one guy living there murdered his housemate
Not desirable.

Lawyerliz said...

Well, 30k to 475k $ ish.

Maybe in Cali that's starter.

Sigh.

Lawyerliz said...

That's 350,000.

Lawyerliz said...

My house is up another 500$. Yay, Z.

Rob Dawg said...

Whatare you going to do with your new wealth? Leave it as dead equity or put it to work making America great again?

The high speed rail is in trouble again. No money, delays, cost overruns, congressional opposition and lawsuits galore. Apparently the business model assumed billions in private investment by now that hasn't appeared.

Rob Dawg said...

$350k in my neck of the woods is considered a reasonable downpayment.

Lawyerliz said...

Dead equity.

It would be had to find a house that expensive around here. There are a few at 600 to 700k, and more in the 500s. There is one house on acreage, directly on the river, lots of square footage, that Z has at a million.2$. God knows what it would cost in Cali.

Lawyerliz said...

Usa Today headline: as love affair with Put in Fizzles, Russians Become Dishartened by Trump. I will read no further. The whole thing would be hilarious if it wasn't a bit scary.

Lawyerliz said...

I didn't need to know that. Good morning anyway.

Lawyerliz said...

I checked Z on the prices of houses on a very nice golf course south of hear. Prices about the same withe more of a n price spread, say 50k up or down. There is one house actually for sale at 275k $.

LBD said...

Good Morning!

The prices here of RRE range from $50K (fresh painted firewood) to the most expensive at $650K which is in my neighborhood. Nice hill top view house on 5 acres but needs the whole interior updated. Real 80's look. Down side here county taxes on this house are $8446 and probably low to sale price.

Lawyerliz said...

Nobody wants to talk houses?
Lonely.

Lawyerliz said...

Mine needed interior redone too. It was really hideous. Which was good, cause we got it cheap. Bathrooms still need redoing except half bath. Our taxes are only 3500, but then there is insurance, about the same.

Rob Dawg said...

Per market value our property taxes are about three tenths of one percent. We too got a deal because the inside was a time warp.

Rob Dawg said...

$25/day property tax does hurt. What are the sales tax and income tax rates roughly?

LBD said...

Local city property tax is about 2.2% accessed value. State/county sales tax is 5.5% and top income tax is 6.8%. All tilted to AG producers advantage.

Cinco-X said...

If you redo a bathroom or kitchen, I'd suggest NOT using fixtures from Home Despot. Pay 50% more and get far better quality stuff at the local plumbing supply house

Mike said...

The ideal location to live up here for "tax efficiency" purposes would be Vancouver WA (across the river from Portland). No income taxes and low (~1%)
prop taxes of WA..drive across the river and get 0% sales taxes from OR.

Cinco-X said...

Savvy

Mike said...

the downside of course..if you have to live in Vancouver WA...hahahahaha

Mike said...

Rob Dawg said...

Even the "trusted brands" at Home Despot are not the same as the real models at real supply houses.

sm_landlord said...

> Even the "trusted brands" at Home Despot are not the same as the real models at real supply houses.

Once in a while I re-learn that the hard way.
Many of the plumbing products have been de-contented, the faucets in particular are greatly inferior.

I haven't been burned too badly on Hope Despot tools (yet), but I did make the mistake of purchasing one of their shop vacs... once. I had no idea that there such a thing as a disposable shop vac. I sure hope they can keep the HF mentality out of the remainder of the tools.

They've gotten scary good at making plastic seem like metal and sheet metal look like castings.

sm_landlord said...

I was there yesterday to pick up a replacement toilet seat, and happened to pick up and examine a shower divertor valve. The best one they had was terribly restricted, obviously to cut costs. It did appear to be a real casting, though. ;-)
