Farmers are being forced to make difficult choices about whether to abandon some of the state’s hallmark fruits and vegetables, move operations abroad, import workers under a special visa or replace them altogether with machines.
Growers who can afford it have already begun raising worker pay well beyond minimum wage. Wages for crop production in California increased by 13% from 2010 to 2015, twice as fast as average pay in the state, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
LATimes
Just a reminder, "ain't nothing price won't fix." And before you suggest that table prices will explode, not really. Farmers will try to claim that wages are a big portion of their costs but with the skim between farm and table in the totsl cost, not much.

So where do Americans get their income if they don't need these jobs? Government cuts might fix the problem. I pick cantaloupe one summer when I was 14 (illegal), It didn't kill me and it was great experience that taught me what I didn't want to do it for a living.
Build/service/design/sell robots that pick cantaloupe?
How much would it take to lure americans to do the job?
I don't like picking the little bit of stuff I occasionally grow.
Zillow thinks that with a big down payment I could make payment on 300k $, with income of 70k $.
That's more than 4 x income.
On my own house.
Americans where taught they are to good to do these jobs. Get a degree and make a million dollars, how did that work out? Quit importing more poverty. How do you change that? History says hunger is a great motivator. Why do pickers migrate here to do the work?

We could adopt Canada's immigrant standards. Or Mexico's.
When I was a kid I did seasonal work on farms. It always paid better than standard minimum wage. I say standard minimum wage because garners were only "required" to pay half the standard minimum wage. Their cross would've rotted in the fields of they'd tried that.
Of course, during the of season, you could easily see that lower rate. I also recall loading hay in the hot, July Florida sun for $1/hr... If you were lucky that old man would give you $4 for 3&1/2 hours work... If you worked REALLY hard
Perhaps the reason EECON et al are so cranky as of late:

DYAC... Farmers and crops
EEcon and sumluk and others have just lost their way. They think the Trump Presidency has already had material negative effects on their daily lives. If that isn't cognitive dissonance what is?
Well the baby did have an actual negative effect on me. A doc was so worried about a single ck relative who couldn't get in he could pay attention to me.
Ban dammit, ban
Also curious that they can accept ask if this Russia nonsense without evidence and then complain about unsubstantiated wiretap accusations, despite having seen the results of that surveillance in the news
That's the doctor's fault, not Trump's
Drinking Jamaican ginger beer. Lips smack. Could buy gator to ear. . . Nah.
Cocoa Village, unlike a shopping mall is pretty full.
It didn't look like that when Major Nelson took Genie shopping there 50 years ago!
Shops all tenanted, parking full restaurants full, sidewalks full, lots of odd interesting stuff, playhouse, more stuff being built . . . .
I still like Trumps ideas but is is near impossible to chance decades of wrong quickly, maybe to late.
Hard, honest, menial, low paid work when you are young is very valuable later in life. IMO
Snowflakes melt under pressure or friction or stress.
Or even a withering stare

A sad day indeed
RIP Chuck Berry, one of the best!
Just watched a delta 4 air force satellite launch with solids. Had a very different trajectory than usual.
We should buy Baja California for an additional launch site.
We can just walk it off.💔

Who are you, and what have you done with lawyer Liz?
I think we bought Mexico already. Isn't it the 51 state? :)
> I think we bought Mexico already.
Nope, we didn't buy it. Just paid for it many times over ;-)
How much would it take to lure americans to do the job?
somewhere between what they pay now..and $100 per hour would be my guess..
Good morning all. It was nice and cool enough to snuggles with hub.
Brrrr. It's 58. And sunny.
I get the blog to myself again. Hub getting me coffee. We are going to see the student production of anyhing goes after Unitarian church. Hub took a stagecraft course help paint and build.
Moved a bunch of money out of credit union. Hope to get some profits! G the little condo is making money. It has no mtg, though. And my house is making 500 to 1000$ a week. In imaginary money. But I could never afford to live in Kal.
So Trump is not as sowing critical media into his Confabs and some of his minions aren't either. Only Fox. Well, he has the right to do this. But I'm pretry sure they will get a mighty revenge. They will certainly try. Reagan was Teflon. What's the reverse of teflon?

Good Morning!
I am thinking Dirt Magnet.
Why?
Trump attacks the loonies and keeps them busy with them chasing nonsense. He is not and won't be the normal President. What gets accomplished is for all of us to be seen. IMO
You're thinking of Puerto Rico
Disney is opening a land based on Avatar, which I liked a lot. Perhaps a response to Wizarding world. It may get my tush over there yet. I was over Disney ed a decade or 2 ago.
Prolly nothing much.
My daughter came over and spent the night... Had breakfast with her this morning
Nice.
Morning all. Yeah busy. And I have a stack of unfinished posts including a Disney Parks inflation tracker. These coastal fog mornings are laziness inducing.
My daughter was out there sometime during the last two weeks. She mentioned that the dig was so bad they didn't even bother to go to SM pier... She also managed to squeeze in Yosemite
Looks like we get a two day respite from the rain. Noticed yesterday that the trees and flowers are starting to bloom..progress!!

If college students can get credits for protesting then they should get credit for a menial labor job like agriculture harvesting by hand. In fact it should be mandatory. Your thoughts?
I think they'll learn important life lessons piling up student debt while pursuing worthless majors..or maybe not
As long as Starbucks needs more baristas...
Perhaps there'll be re-education so enough...A prime location/occupation for the intelligencia
Ironically, I think they're planning on hiring refugees for those jobs going forward.
Just watched some commentary on Rachael Maddow's tax return expose from both the right and the left. Eviscerating

More inoculation.

Trump and Banning don't seem this politically savvy to me... Must be overconfidence on the part of the deep state
Trump is not "politically" savvy. That's always been the opposition mistake. Sun Tzu.
The art of war recognizes nine varieties of ground: (1) Dispersive ground; (2) facile ground; (3) contentious ground; (4) open ground; (5) ground of intersecting highways; (6) serious ground; (7) difficult ground; (8) hemmed-in ground; (9) desperate ground.
Left to readers as to where Trump has isolated his detractors.
Well... My daughter went home. Pretty sure day here I guess. I can no longer stomach mudville; anything going on over there?

Trump Trolls the Welfare State
The student production of anything goes was marvelous.
As to Trump and his detractors, a pox on all their houses.
Trumps tax returns ( probably leak on purpose) was genius as it backfired of the loonies. Master of getting the dog to chase their tail and bite it. LOL!
I never thought my Art major was worthless. But it wasn't that expensive either.
Well we learned the innards were 200 pages long or so.
Not unexpected... My taxes are fairly simple and the return is probably 30-40 pages. The killer is owning a portion of a couple of LLCs.
T is excellent at bluffing. Sometimes to n t red to know thinks. He doesnt.
Need to know things
>Trumps tax returns ( probably leak on purpose) was genius as it backfired of the loonies.
Yep, the 2005 tax return is probably the only one in the last 15 years where he actually paid taxes. So it's the one he released. LOL
Taxes can be very inconsistent YOY 2015 I got hammered and 2016 for the first time ever I paid Zero Fed and State. I measure my returns by the book the account prepares, usually about a 1/2" now about a 1/4". Retirement has it's benefits. :)
