Lessons learned from the end of California’s “permanent drought”
Summary: The “permanent drought” in California, like the now ended “permanent drought” in Texas, is ending. But like the panic about Texas, it is rich in lessons about our difficulty clearly seeing the world — and the futility of activists exaggerating and lying about the science. Of course, they should have learned this after 29 years of trying (starting from James Hansen’s 1988 Senate testimony).

Has anyone priced out Kali running a couple pipelines from the Pacific ocean to it's critical reservoir's..desalinating along the way?? Maybe just turn it on during drought years??
Has anyone priced out running a pipeline to the border and flushing the surplus population? The singular most infuriating thing was water agencies continuing to issue "will serve" letters while restricting existing customers.
when you think of all the steps/costs involved in extracting a barrel of crude oil from half way around the world and turning it into gasoline and delivered to your corner gas station..one would think that economically desalinating ocean water would be pretty straightforward by comparison.
Icebergs! And when they get too small we load up our seniors and set sail.
Unemployment claims are way down. Maybe people are buying or "saving up" for a down payment to buy. Zillow is showing virtually nothing for sale within a couple of miles of my house.

I like it..solves the water problem and entitlement cost problem at the same time!!
And when last I checked, people were staying 8 years instead of 5 before moving.
Fire mane made the case that more people are covered by UI but I still think reduced hours are the new layoffs.

We've had a Desal plant operating in Carlsbad for more than year now.
With all the economic data behaving normally well more normally is it time to bring back the old sayings like don't fight the Fed and more important, sell in May and go away?
My house went up another 300$. I found a couple of nice trailers for sale a couple miles south, and a couple of houses with a half mile. That's it.

cool (and good to see you EJ!!)..have you noticed a big difference in your water bills (i.e. have costs gone up significantly) since the plant came online??
Great another engineer. Now we can have theee more differing opinions! Just kidding.
Liz, when you say "trailers" you mean manufactured housing? Aka hurricane magnets?

I see a two bedroom condo for $42K near you. The pictures are kind of depressing (though the window treatments are very "creative")...but hey..for $42K...put another $20K in to fix it up..
maybe we can be neighbors!! lol
Hi, Jim.
Not sure. Yes, hurricane magnets. Well cared for.
Address of condo?
Nothing that cheap near me. Trailer 79 and 105.
it's going to be interesting to watch new car sales up here with the new annual licensing fee (to pay for expanded light rail) now in place. Seattle metro car owners will pay a 1.1% tax (in addition to the normal state licensing fees) annually..calculated off of depreciated (straight line..not Blue book value) MSRP of the car.
Co-worker of my gf just got her bill for a 1 year old Ford suv...$850.
180 Minna lane
watching YouTube video of (fat tire) along cocoa beach..looks nice..where do you shop down there Liz...Publix??
"fat tire biking"
ooooh..they have an Aldi!!
Publix. I pass by the Aldi every day. Never go on. Everyone loves publix.
interesting..heard good things about Aldi's (owned by same company as Trader Joes I believe)..
so is it realistic to live on Merritt Island and work in Orlando?? (asking for a friend)...;<)
Minna is quite a distance. I live on the other side of Courtney
If you live really near 529, the Beeline/beachline. And o
Job on the far West side of Orlando, barely.
520
yeah..looks fairly close on the map..but no good freeway between the two it appears
> cool (and good to see you EJ!!)..have you noticed a big difference in your water bills (i.e. have costs gone up significantly) since the plant came online??
Water bill went up, but that was because we were using more water with the drip irrigation system (figure that). Now it's down since we've mostly had irrigation off for the last three months. These rains have actually hit San Diego area. This is unusual -- mostly the pineapple express doesn't get this far south.
New drought map says you are abnormally dry.
>New drought map says you are abnormally dry.
Doesn't seem like it.
Good grief, drought nearly gone. 520 is a good freeway, Mike, except it isnt free.
My sister in La Jolla is considering changing her name to Naamah (Noah's wife).
Any more rain on the way?
Any more rain on the way?
Yes. SoCal a trace SLO/SB Sunday but NorCal a full Pineapple Sun/Mon.
there must have been accidents this morning (or maybe just normal morning traffic)..Google maps was saying 45 minutes to travel the 30 miles (or so) into Orlando via 528..down to 35 minutes now..
how much is the toll each way??
520..sorry
wait..I was right the first time 528 (into the airport)..
I usually don't travel it in rush hour
It can be pretry bad. Or not Tolls? Hmm we buy a sticker. 4$ to Orlando? Not sure.
Last time I left Orlando Airport towards the west i remember it costing 85¢/mile to get out of the tolls. $6-7. I remember the first $4.50(?) and thinking "okay I'm good to at least the Everglades." Ouch.
I was going the other way.
$7 tolls when you're on vacation is an annoyance...when it becomes a part of everyday life it moves to a whole different level..
btw..congrats on the market exit yesterday..you may have picked the top (for the near/intermediate term at least)..
Tornado targets
No Money for Desal in SM, gotta pay for the pensions somehow.

Can't they pay for that with RR ticket prices?
Who are you?!
Stocks. Under performance on the active management side. Forget who I am quoting.
Great... It turns cold, and my town is almost completely without power... The worst part is the lack of a toilet. These new pumping septic systems have limited storage. I can get water from the stream in back as long as it didn't get too cold
Try the George Washington Bridge...
power outages are the worst...especially in winter
Cinco,
Might consider a trailer or motor home with a generator for short term power outages and a fun toy as well. I did in a power outage run the generator for lights TV and computer usage.
Why is the power off?
Calling the end of the drought's like calling the top in the market. I'm not about to do either.
The real problem is how droughts are measured.
We've been thinking of getting a propane generator installation. Just haven't pulled the trigger. They're now saying power back by 2 PM tomorrow... Whew
Heavy winds blew down trees all over the area. Much of North Central MA was affected
Good to see you around...
We don't dwell on politics here but this was too funny to ignore.
"eClaire" as in live by the tweet die by the tweet.
Don't get it.
Good morning.
How do I get Icons?
Not watching the evenibg news is leaving a hole in my life, but I just can't bear watching.
Agree. The all politics thing is getting stale.
Anyway. How many of the icons showed when I put up 30? From that I can tell you how to get some.
A bunch 15 or 20 at least.

Good Morning!
I don't twit or what ever they call it. :)
I don't know how to do that.
G' morning everyone!!
Anybody's house go up in value overnight?? hahahaha
I don't have to look, I am sure the county tax assessor will do it for me. Another government service looking out for my best interest. LOL!
speaking of houses..hope Cinco's power came back on...
I am sure the county tax assessor will do it for me.
they heard you had a generator...+$10,000...hahahaha
Thanks... It came back on a little after midnight. There's about 10 in the surrounding a area still without power, and only one in my town. I think they expect everyone to have power by 1 PM today. Appreciate your thoughts... Internet and cable is back too, which is almost as big a relief
😋
If you post from a phone or a tablet, you probably already have them. BTW, you can edit your profile and add an avatar. Mine is a pic of our dachshund sitting on my lap. She's intently eyeballing a fly that was buzzing around the room last Summer
great news!! yeah last time we lost power..I remember looking around and thinking...what did I used to do for entertainment before the internet?? lol
I hear ya... Without power and Internet/cable I don't have phone service or 4G either as I'm in the boonies... Sure am glad I had that gigantic ash tree taken down last Summer. We found after removal that the entire core was hollowed out by ants, and I'm nearly certain that it would have come down on our house and our propane tanks
Mike, My generator is in my very expensive motor home. The county has deprecated it to zero and plates are $50 a year. Crazy it goes down and houses go up.
World with out power is rough. We are spoiled. Glad you can get back to normal.
It's summer here. Close to 80° later.
When the Big One hits those of us with generator and the solar panel houses that survive will be minor gods.
New post up.
Dow is close to 21k. Got your hats?
