address America’s most pressing economic challenges.
- The Distressed Communities Index (DCI), a new and interactive way to visualize economic distress and prosperity across 25,000 zip codes in the U.S.
- The New Map of Economic Growth and Recovery, a jarring look at the limited and concentrated nature of new business creation since the Great Recession.
- The Millennial Economy, a national survey on the Millennial Generation’s views on everything from their personal financial situations to the jobs available in their communities to the trustworthiness of American institutions.

would be interesting to see that national DCI map in a time-lapse..e.g. 1960/70/80/90..etc..
good morning!!
The great zips next to bad zips is fascinating.
'Tis a spectacular morning. Lots to do.
Thanks, I think, for choosing Floridah.
Wyoming looks pretty happy..as does Iowa..the rest..not so much.
I don't understand why the part awhy there is coastal poverty in Dade Broward and Palm Beach County, with the dark greens inland. Could it be there are loads of retired people , thus unemployed along those coasts. The interior counties, distressed gave relatively few people. You can see Orlando in fine detail in the middle. I don't know much about the panhandle. Facinating. Thanks.
You can clearly see the cities, and conclude poverty is a phenom of the rural. I'd like to know the percentage of retired as cpm pared with elsewhere. Retire people could have less income, but be related well because they owe little.
Relatively well off
Thank me for picking it and not making fun of it. ;)
The variety was part of the choice. Who wants swaths of West Coast craziness every day or how the Northeast big cities are turning European in wealth geography.
Good point about retirees possibly skewing the figures.
Lots of jobs added in the big southern coastal counties of Florida.
Thank you for not making fun of it.
You can play around with different areas. Counties, even congressional districts. And yes, VenCo has 0% distress. The law of averaging takes over at the county level.
Stay modest Liz:

In addition, postmodern social scientists and their inspired disciples are using these ideas to serve social justice goals. This is a serious problem for a number of reasons. Most notably, many of the postmodern theoretical positions are at odds with decades of research on how to reduce prejudice and improve intergroup relations, and could thus cause harm to members of the marginalized groups they are supposedly seeking to help.
Alabama doesn't look very happy. Too bad the jobs information stops at 2014.
I was waiting for Cinco to make and observation about... eh hem... Alabama's red tide.
"Sweet Home Alabama"..or "Alabama Getaway"
depends upon your p.o.v. I guess
(Skynyrd band was originally from Jacksonville FL actually..none of them made Alabama their "home"..but they did launch their careers at Muscle Shoals recording studios (in 'Bama)..as did Duane Allman
and that is your Saturday morning "Southern Rock" trivia lesson for today..lol
"Southern Rock is an oxymoron."
"Hey! Who ya callin a moran dumbass?"
[/ducks]
Am I the only one amused that the threat of a security breach at the White House triggers an Alert Level Orange?
interesting how many great guitar players came out of FL all about the same time (early to mid 70's)..
Hughie Thomasson (Outlaws), Steve Gaines/Alan Collins (Skynyrd)..Tom Petty..Don Felder (Eagles)...Dickie Betts (Allman Bros)..Ricky Medlocke
reminiscent of Britain in the 60's..(Clapton, Townshend, Beck, Gilmore, etc)
Remembering Florida in the 1970s I can understand any reason to find a way to something different. FL 1970s is not even remotely recognizable today.
great music often comes from "gritty" circumstances/surroundings..
I though Steve Gaines was from Oklahoma
Ya... That's when I, and I believe outsider lived there. Kinda nice, but coke and population growth ruined it.
oops..you might be right Cinco..ok I'll substitute in Gary Rossington then ;<)
I used to live across the street from a legendary rocker (when he was a kid). It was a really rough neighborhood. A lot of the less desirable types we're moving the at the time from all over, and the schools were busting at the seams. A lot of riff raff... He moved back upstate with his Mom after she remarried and went on to fame. He wasn't mentored above fwiw
Mentioned
I've met him before at an AES show... Nice guy. He confirmed to me that powder finger was in fact written by Neil Young to be played by Skynyrd
well..tell us his name!!
gotta run to an appointment..I have the back story on why Britain was able to produce all those great guitarists back in the 60's also...will share later..laterol
Everyone okay hanging on this thread until tomorrow? Things getting busy as we are entering pregame for the fancy ball.
Meh... Maybe it'll still be affordable when I retire... Any downturn is probably related to the auto industry
Tom Petty
Sure... For a bit I thought I'd been abandoned again
I got here in the early 70s. Miami Is way over built and way over traffic-ed.
Apparently Guitarist, singer song writer Randy California was to be in my HS graduation class had he not quit school to peruse a music career. His group Spirit had a hit called I Got A Line On You and played with Jimmy Hendricks. He also wrote some songs many think Led Zeppelin copied. I met him one night not knowing who he was. That's my contribution to the music theme.
I was reading through the complete report about the loss of dynamism at one fo the links Robert gave. Here is the PDF of the full report:
http://eig.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Dynamism-in-Retreat.pdf
It appears that they are counting the smallest business as one with a commercial location and at least one employee, thus leaving out the people who run businesses without those things. Frankly, I think that's where some of the activity must have gone. The punishment the government dishes out to business with employees has been growing steadily over the time that business activity as measured by this report has been shrinking.
Of course that's not the only reason that dynamism is declining, just another piece of the very depressing puzzle.
I hope Rob had a good time.
House up another 250 or so with zillow. Checked my old Deerwood house much smaller, but in a city, worth supposedly only 30 k less than the Merritt Island house. They put a new roof on it so my 30 year roof didn't last 22 years. Or they didn't like it was red. Now it's dark grey. They've got the right aerial, but street view is the wrong house.
Morning... Were looking at yet another Nor'easter this week...
Maybe the house is going up on their algorithm because I look at It every day to see how much it is gone up.
Hahaha hehehe.
Mid march??? You don't have to live there.
A single family house being built here. A left over lot on a busy street. More small commercial bldg too. Another space x launch soon.
If it needs blowing up a computer will do it, not a human. I imagone humans will be hovering.
I daresay a lot of the non employees are paid under the table.
Unemployment U6. 9.2 % black 8.3% overall 4.7%.
What would make me really happy and truly indicate prosperity?
Say overall 4%.
U6. 8.2%.
Black 6.5%.
Asian already has a 3 handle.
Thoughts?
Oh, come on, no east coasters?
Spring forward Liz. Give us left coasters another half hour of darkness.
Yes a good time was had. One of my "adult" children had a bit too good of a time. Didn't have the sense to pass out. Everyone is fine now.
Thoughts
I've never really been "on board" with the way they conduct that survey. They dial random numbers..and then interview anyone who answers and is willing to answer questions about their employment status?? I can see all kinds of problems with that approach..
(Dark) Mornin' everyone..
Good Morning!
What's an alarm clock? Off to breakfast. :)
THE UE rate probably has some value as a lagging, directional indicator of employment..but that's about it.
I wish we would get more data out of the monthly ADP employment numbers. Full time vs part time, wage levels, benefits/no benefits..so we could get a gauge of the quality of the new jobs being added...not just the number of jobs.
I kinda do... My family, my job and my doctor's are here...
I'm sure that would make a lot of folks happy, especially blacks.

When CR posts the graphs that site recoveries under various President's, remember this:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/dont-let-trump-or-any-president-take-credit-for-strong-jobs-numbers/
the local news the other night was so funny (all the channels out here are virulently anti-Trump). They lead with the story of the strong jobs number..and then immediately go to an interview with a "Democratic strategist" who dismisses the idea Trump had anything to do with it.
I mean..either just report the number..or if you want to get political about it...interview both sides.
They are beyond hope though..I mostly have it on mute while watching until the weather/sports/"Washington's most wanted" (crime) segments come up.. ;<)
Agreed
Well Trump tally didn't do it. It's too soon.
But really beyond hope.
I'm not so sure about that Liz. When employers hire...it's based on their view of their business for the next 12-18 months (minimum..too expensive to add people for shorter than that)...not because of what happened last year.
I wouldn't give Trump 100% of the credit..but I don't think you can totally dismiss his impact on business optimism.
Don't be too slow for credit either. Remember the 700 point futures tantrum election result. Small and medium business optimism spiked and they used to be those hiring. Imagine if those businesses were instead bracing for President HRC to expand Obamacare with small business mandates.
The LA stations usually feature Trump in the crime segments too.
The LA stations usually feature Trump in the crime segments too.
hahahahahahaha
Luckily most of the local news stations run those banners across the bottom of the screen to tell you about the next couple of stories they will be covering..so when I see things like "Refugee Choir Performs" ..it's easily avoided.
I hate the weather tease. 0:02 a beautiful day. What's in the forecast coming up. 0:10 when we return the current conditions and what to expect. 0:21 live from the coast surf shot and extended forecast ...
Etc.
"Protest in Olympia" (our nearby state capitol) can easily be skipped also..unless you like watching 15 weirdos carrying signs.. ;<)
"weather tease"..yeah they hire those girls up here also.. ;<)
Speaking of coverage. Funny how the President needs to pay for protection but illegals shutting down traffic in cities are part of the cost of democracy.
If we don't build a wall American sports will be invaded by foreign games. Like soccer. Nil-Nil ties? Unamerican!
wow Badgers made the finals of the B10 b-ball tourney today...I had given up hope on them when they lost six or seven straight towards the end of the season..
#March Madness
March madness usually prepts stuff I actually like to watch.
Pre empts.
free one week trial at CBS.com..binge watch NCIS!!
I'm more into baseball this Spring (World Baseball Classic) than college b-ball..but will probably start paying attention if the Badgers make a deep run..
Fwiw, Netflix has NCIS...
Ooof. Home a mere 24 hrs later. Family debriefing starting. Thanks for all your patience. Nap and hopefully back to normal this afternoon.
whoa..Cinco has some weather headed his way...
that's a big arse storm..stretches from Maine all the way back to the Dakotas..
My sister swears that if the Chatham house gets damaged she's selling. 50mph winds. Cinco town more than a foot of spring expected.
that thing must have dropped in from Canada...way too much energy to be the remnants of what we got last week.
First, let me say thanks to gracious host for Useful Data Site
I have some orientation questions:
When did the HCN site get shut down? (asking for a friend)
Is there a URL for the mudfilledecon site? I'd like to see if the Left has started eating itself up yet.
Thx in advance
MudVille is thataway ===> https://muddyeconomist.com/mudbiker/
I wonder how the media got so predominately left-wing. Is it because the journalism schools at the major universities are filled with left-wing faculty and cranking out similar minded graduates?? or is it a more top down thing..big money individuals/entities with globalist ambitions buying up all the media properties..and then dictating "message"??
Thanks sm_landlord
I miss Outsider and even npoic, but I can't tell you how very good it is to see you again.
Nobody goes into journalism with the attitude; "I'm going to preserve the status quo!"
[Mike] "how the media got so predominately left-wing"
serendipitously (synchronicity to you Jungians) Yesterday I watched a speech Hugh Hewitt gave at Hillsdale college with good detailed information on how, and since when, that happened.
If he were still alive, Harry Jaffa would blame sex, drugs and rock'n roll (a.k.a. moral decline + unmeritricious choices).
Best,
I think it really started when they got Richard Nixon. It gave them a goal to go after. Not that he didn't deserve it, but I thought at the time that this was not a good thing for the country. I loathe Trump, but destroying him is not a good thing for the country either. I wonder if Melania could run the country, the was Mrs Wilson did? But she didn't have to do it for so long.
just thinking back to that news segment the other night that I mentioned earlier...so we're talking local news..so a good national jobs report should have been mentioned maybe 10 minutes into the broadcast?? (if at all).
Instead they lead off with it...and quickly turning the discussion to the fact Trump should be given no credit for it.
Obviously the talking head anchors aren't making these decisions..you have people in station mgmt (news directors, etc or higher) determining the spin.
It is funny watching snowflake journos in the Presidential pools discovering that their relationship with the White House is not one of equals.
of course this is Seattle..so they may just be telling people what they want to hear.
Yup... Tuesday night is not gonna be pretty. I've got a big presentation I need to deliver Wednesday night too. I hope everyone shows up
Crap... The storm shifted tracks, and now my place is getting the brunt...12-18" risk for the storm...
yeah..I think the WH press briefings (from Spicer) should just be a list of accomplishments from the day before..and a summary of events coming that day...no q&a period.
The WH press has lost the privilege of asking questions imo (which aren't really questions..but ideological commentary pretending to be a question)..
No joy in mudville... Only bitter anger over the election
I expect that it's both, plus liberals tend to gravitate to jobs like that as opposed to gainful employment
foot and a half of snow and 50 mph winds?? Even J. Cantore would turn down that assignment.. ;<)
best of luck Cinco..stay safe
True dat
jeezus..this Walton Jr guy for Michigan is good...
Psychodave, good to see you too ;-)
On the news, we watched the PBS Newshour the other night, as well as Washington Week.
PBS political coverage looks like the New York Times and the Washington Post competing to see who is most upset, dismayed, offended, etc. It's really dark in there.
Luck to Cinco. Cantore would do anything stupid.
May be he'll be lucky.
Well... We had a big windstorm a week or so ago and lost power... Hopefully all the wimpy branches have fallen and we'll be okay as far as power... But I think I'll stop and buy some candles just in case... Maybe save a movie for Netflix locally in case we lose cable too... Jeez
My weather station just clicked 29 mph and it is sheltered by the tree line. We where at the big box home center and would not be surprised it hit close to 50 mph.
MSM has been bypassed by Twitter and it scares them to death as it should. What Trump says can be scary or a useful tool to keep the media busy. You pick, LOL!
IMO education is to blame for the liberal media, Social justice.
You can't like his tweets, can you?
What I am is embarrassed. Now I can't watch the news.
I had it on long enough to hear one word, and that word was Trump. If only they wouldnt show his picture!
Cinco - got generator?
How much snow does it take before you guys just call a "snow day" there?
Something is wrong with social justice?
Social justice to me is mob thinking justice. Emotional instead of logical.
Our 2nd floor has roll dow shutter andiami Dade hurricane glass in the windows. As does the first floor. We m have shutters for the first floor too,but certainly wouldn't put them up for a mere 50 miles an hour.
We need emotions and logic,Mr Spock.
If you define something as bad, well it is bad.
Reference Alice in Wonderland.
Not in my world logic properly used fixes problems emotion can not.
you don't have to read Trumps tweets Liz...
Obama has written about 15K of them..and I haven't read a single one..
Me too. Didn't know he wrote any. Trump's are quoted by others and can't be avoided.
Emotions can fix some problems too.
Hillary has 9800 tweets..haven't read any of those either
which tweets from Trump bothered you?? They usually make me laugh...
I have wiped them from my memory banks. I wish they were a joke. Who knows what he really means?
Ohhh. I wish I had a "roll Dow shutter." I think we are going to need it shortly. Market indicators are rarely correct but this many market indicators are rarely wrong.
(Yes, I know you meant "down" and those are great things. If I get to build a lottery house it will have those for fire/quake.)
You would if he ever got Wis into his sweet sixteen! 🏀
I was just looking back at his last month's tweets..most of them are very positive..thanking companies for investing in America..cheering on good economic data etc etc..and then the funny ones..like where he goes after Arnold for his bad Apprentice ratings...
I'm familiar with the way people twist themselves to extract the very worst possible meaning from a short form communication. These days I fall back on "treat them seriously not literally."
Never forget. Trump is not a politician. He ultimately doesn't care what you say about him as long as you say something about him. He doesn't need to be liked by the MSM. The MSM on the other hand desperately needs him. Deep down they know it and that pissed them all that much more.
I think he does care. But not about the msm.
Nope... We've been talking about it, and if we lose power this time, I'm sure we'll pull the trigger on it this Spring
If you actually look into what they're teaching in Social Justice curriculums you might find something sing with it too... Or maybe not
Seems dead over at the mud hole...
Storming yet?
Almost too cold to snow in Cinco town. In the teens. At not that fancy Euro Celsius stuff.
Ya... No snow till Tuesday
Everyone knows why I live in Dawgifornia right? Google Worcester MA April 1, 1983.
Emotions and reason (the head and the heart) need to balance eachother out. Don't see much of that effort happening these days.
Closed mind and open mouth is a formula for an empty soul. Several blogs have discovered this recently.
Tex-ass tea sporting a 47 handle. Good news on every front.
Somewhere there are pics of my wife digging out from that mess...I moved up the following year. Google the April Fool's Day storm from the late 90s
Good morning... Week not fit me; I'm such as a dog. How about you Liz?
Don't understand. I am such as a cat, if that means anything. Good morning. It might rain.
Gas prices not going down here yet. Mostly at 2.239.
House up another 100$.
Son's house purchase marching along. Movers hired.
Need new post. This one apparently dead.
Good Morning!
Busy Sunday evening putting a floating vinyl floor in the pool house. That was easy when things are square!
Gas prices still the same here.
Morning all new post. Gas price prediction later. Thanks for your patience during a busy real world™ period.
