Useful Data Site - DCI

High School degrees, housing vacancies, adults not in workforce, poverty, income.  All kinds of useful and quick and detailed data here at links:
EIG is a bipartisan public policy organization, founded in 2013,
combining innovative research and data-driven advocacy to
address America’s most pressing economic challenges.
  • The Distressed Communities Index (DCI), a new and interactive way to visualize economic distress and prosperity across 25,000 zip codes in the U.S.
  • The New Map of Economic Growth and Recovery, a jarring look at the limited and concentrated nature of new business creation since the Great Recession.
  • The Millennial Economy, a national survey on the Millennial Generation’s views on everything from their personal financial situations to the jobs available in their communities to the trustworthiness of American institutions.
  • Dynamism in Retreat, a new study examining the critical implications of declining economic dynamism in the United States.

would be interesting to see that national DCI map in a time-lapse..e.g. 1960/70/80/90..etc..

Thanks, I think, for choosing Floridah.

Wyoming looks pretty happy..as does Iowa..the rest..not so much.

Lawyerliz said...

I don't understand why the part awhy there is coastal poverty in Dade Broward and Palm Beach County, with the dark greens inland. Could it be there are loads of retired people , thus unemployed along those coasts. The interior counties, distressed gave relatively few people. You can see Orlando in fine detail in the middle. I don't know much about the panhandle. Facinating. Thanks.

Lawyerliz said...

You can clearly see the cities, and conclude poverty is a phenom of the rural. I'd like to know the percentage of retired as cpm pared with elsewhere. Retire people could have less income, but be related well because they owe little.

Lawyerliz said...

Relatively well off

Rob Dawg said...

Thank me for picking it and not making fun of it. ;)

The variety was part of the choice. Who wants swaths of West Coast craziness every day or how the Northeast big cities are turning European in wealth geography.

Good point about retirees possibly skewing the figures.

Lawyerliz said...

Lots of jobs added in the big southern coastal counties of Florida.

Lawyerliz said...

Thank you for not making fun of it.

Rob Dawg said...

You can play around with different areas. Counties, even congressional districts. And yes, VenCo has 0% distress. The law of averaging takes over at the county level.

In addition, postmodern social scientists and their inspired disciples are using these ideas to serve social justice goals. This is a serious problem for a number of reasons. Most notably, many of the postmodern theoretical positions are at odds with decades of research on how to reduce prejudice and improve intergroup relations, and could thus cause harm to members of the marginalized groups they are supposedly seeking to help.

Alabama doesn't look very happy. Too bad the jobs information stops at 2014.

"Sweet Home Alabama"..or "Alabama Getaway"

depends upon your p.o.v. I guess

(Skynyrd band was originally from Jacksonville FL actually..none of them made Alabama their "home"..but they did launch their careers at Muscle Shoals recording studios (in 'Bama)..as did Duane Allman

and that is your Saturday morning "Southern Rock" trivia lesson for today..lol

interesting how many great guitar players came out of FL all about the same time (early to mid 70's)..

Hughie Thomasson (Outlaws), Steve Gaines/Alan Collins (Skynyrd)..Tom Petty..Don Felder (Eagles)...Dickie Betts (Allman Bros)..Ricky Medlocke

reminiscent of Britain in the 60's..(Clapton, Townshend, Beck, Gilmore, etc)

Rob Dawg said...

Remembering Florida in the 1970s I can understand any reason to find a way to something different. FL 1970s is not even remotely recognizable today.

I used to live across the street from a legendary rocker (when he was a kid). It was a really rough neighborhood. A lot of the less desirable types we're moving the at the time from all over, and the schools were busting at the seams. A lot of riff raff... He moved back upstate with his Mom after she remarried and went on to fame. He wasn't mentored above fwiw

Apparently Guitarist, singer song writer Randy California was to be in my HS graduation class had he not quit school to peruse a music career. His group Spirit had a hit called I Got A Line On You and played with Jimmy Hendricks. He also wrote some songs many think Led Zeppelin copied. I met him one night not knowing who he was. That's my contribution to the music theme.

I was reading through the complete report about the loss of dynamism at one fo the links Robert gave. Here is the PDF of the full report:
http://eig.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Dynamism-in-Retreat.pdf

It appears that they are counting the smallest business as one with a commercial location and at least one employee, thus leaving out the people who run businesses without those things. Frankly, I think that's where some of the activity must have gone. The punishment the government dishes out to business with employees has been growing steadily over the time that business activity as measured by this report has been shrinking.

Of course that's not the only reason that dynamism is declining, just another piece of the very depressing puzzle.

Lawyerliz said...

I hope Rob had a good time.

House up another 250 or so with zillow. Checked my old Deerwood house much smaller, but in a city, worth supposedly only 30 k less than the Merritt Island house. They put a new roof on it so my 30 year roof didn't last 22 years. Or they didn't like it was red. Now it's dark grey. They've got the right aerial, but street view is the wrong house.

Cinco-X said...

I've never really been "on board" with the way they conduct that survey. They dial random numbers..and then interview anyone who answers and is willing to answer questions about their employment status?? I can see all kinds of problems with that approach..

(Dark) Mornin' everyone..

LBD said...

Good Morning!

What's an alarm clock? Off to breakfast. :)

Unknown said...

THE UE rate probably has some value as a lagging, directional indicator of employment..but that's about it.

I wish we would get more data out of the monthly ADP employment numbers. Full time vs part time, wage levels, benefits/no benefits..so we could get a gauge of the quality of the new jobs being added...not just the number of jobs.

Cinco-X said...

Unknown said...

the local news the other night was so funny (all the channels out here are virulently anti-Trump). They lead with the story of the strong jobs number..and then immediately go to an interview with a "Democratic strategist" who dismisses the idea Trump had anything to do with it.

I mean..either just report the number..or if you want to get political about it...interview both sides.

They are beyond hope though..I mostly have it on mute while watching until the weather/sports/"Washington's most wanted" (crime) segments come up.. ;<)

Lawyerliz said...

Agreed

Lawyerliz said...

Well Trump tally didn't do it. It's too soon.
But really beyond hope.

Unknown said...

I'm not so sure about that Liz. When employers hire...it's based on their view of their business for the next 12-18 months (minimum..too expensive to add people for shorter than that)...not because of what happened last year.

I wouldn't give Trump 100% of the credit..but I don't think you can totally dismiss his impact on business optimism.

Rob Dawg said...

Don't be too slow for credit either. Remember the 700 point futures tantrum election result. Small and medium business optimism spiked and they used to be those hiring. Imagine if those businesses were instead bracing for President HRC to expand Obamacare with small business mandates.

Rob Dawg said...

The LA stations usually feature Trump in the crime segments too.

I wonder how the media got so predominately left-wing. Is it because the journalism schools at the major universities are filled with left-wing faculty and cranking out similar minded graduates?? or is it a more top down thing..big money individuals/entities with globalist ambitions buying up all the media properties..and then dictating "message"??

[Mike] "how the media got so predominately left-wing"

serendipitously (synchronicity to you Jungians) Yesterday I watched a speech Hugh Hewitt gave at Hillsdale college with good detailed information on how, and since when, that happened.

If he were still alive, Harry Jaffa would blame sex, drugs and rock'n roll (a.k.a. moral decline + unmeritricious choices).

I think it really started when they got Richard Nixon. It gave them a goal to go after. Not that he didn't deserve it, but I thought at the time that this was not a good thing for the country. I loathe Trump, but destroying him is not a good thing for the country either. I wonder if Melania could run the country, the was Mrs Wilson did? But she didn't have to do it for so long.

Unknown said...

just thinking back to that news segment the other night that I mentioned earlier...so we're talking local news..so a good national jobs report should have been mentioned maybe 10 minutes into the broadcast?? (if at all).

Instead they lead off with it...and quickly turning the discussion to the fact Trump should be given no credit for it.

Obviously the talking head anchors aren't making these decisions..you have people in station mgmt (news directors, etc or higher) determining the spin.
