Here to Help

A reader wishes to pick our collective brains for a good used car. He started off by suggesting a slightly used PT Cruiser. That sounds okay to me. They depreciate a lot at the first and are decent products making the combination a good value. Everyone is sure to have an opinion. Just make sure you distingush value and quality and such. I love my Civic but paid a lot. I like my Expedition but only paid a little making it a different kind of good value. Clearly the Expedition has more general utility but if you are just hauling yourself 20 miles to work 0.5 gal versus 1.2 gal is $5 a day. Then again the 3rd row seat has prevented several possible fatricides and/or filicides. The PT has versatility and low operating costs I believe. The $7-$10k cost for a late model can forgive many shortcomings. What say ye dwags? Give a howl, help him out.

Sorry... couldn't resist.

Buy at night and when you are in a hurry.

Place inordinate importance on the little things.

Alternatively, think about having a car, thinkreal hard. Envision yourself behind the wheel. Close your eyes, click your heels together three times and wait for the sound of tires in your driveway.

I really like my 04 Scion xB (I bought it new and plan on running it till the wheels fall off). I hear the Scions are holding good resale value and since the xBs are in for a redesign in a few months, the 04-07 models should get cheaper soon (but not ridiculously so)

Scions are made by the Toyota people if that matters to all y'all

I get 31-34 mpg in my little white box and have had zero maintenance worries.

Murst!

I certainly would not buy Snowflakes VDUB, not even for the celebutard value

Try the Car Talk guys.

El Gringo said...

Is this a serious question? In that case the best way to go for a car is a civic, or an accord if you are looking to spend a little more.

Honda makes the best cars and they hold their value the best. Buy right and you'll have gotten your money's worth when/if you need to sell it.

If you are in a major market, check Craigslist.

The Dude said...

Anything made by Honda. I had a ten year old Accord that ran just a good as the day I purchased it....until a jackass hit me and totaled it. Also, a '99 Acura that will easily last another ten years.

Sometimes the discussion is like a Ford vs Chevy debate, but Honda has performed like no other brand I've ever owned.

BTW, did you notice who was FIRST? That's another FIRST in my bag in case you didn't notice!

Rob Dawg said...

Civics are real expensive slightly used. I've seen many asking more than I paid for new. Accords don't get great gas mileage and sometimes can be expensive to repair and insure. Don't get me wrong, great cars but I think we are trying to strike a balance between capability and hidden value.

Anonymous said...

Do NOT buy a PT. They are built on a Neon chassis. The reliability of these are terrible. They buzz and rattle. The drivetrain sucks.

Do a google search on them. They are popular because they are so cheap.

Why do you think they depreciate 40% in the first 2 years.

Stick with a quality Japanese brand. You can pick up a used Camry, Accord or Civic and drive the wheels off it for 150,000 + miles. Try that with the PT.

I love my wife's 2000 Hyundai Elantra.

We bought it new and loaded with nice options for under $13K with leather seats, power everything, etc and have had next to nothing as far as problems. What little has gone wrong (a burned out headlamp and once an idiot light tuning on when not necessary) has been covered 100% by warranty. The car now has 75k miles on it and never gives us problems.

So far our maintanance expense has been next to nothing in cost: Just oil changes, air filter replacements, fluid checks and the 60k mile check up. Not to mention that the dealer gave us free oil changes for the first 2 years.

Our next car will definately be another Hyundai.

New Corolla's are cheap but boring. They are also bulletproof. They will last 10 years, and hold their resale value much longer. Will a PT Cruiser? Dunno. I doubt they are any near as reliable, but they are far better than older Chrysler products.

I think I must be the only person to have a bad experience with Honda. My first new car was a Honda CRX, and it was constantly in for repairs.

If I were buying a new car today, Nissan is making some very nice looking cars with good MPG -- their Versa got rated as one of the 10 most fuel-efficient cars of 2007.

Hondas and Toyotas are boring boring boring but they are very reliable.

My vote is for a Honda Civic or Accord.

My mother had a '94 Honda Accord. The car was immaculate, she is not a smoker and she garaged the car and kept it serviced regularly. It looked new. She had talked about getting a new vehicle because the Honda was 10 years old but put it off because there was no real urgency. In '05, some idiot hit the car in the rear and it was determined to be a total loss. She got $7800.00 from the guy's insurance company (for an 11 year old car with 150K miles). Not bad!

Consumer Reports has a quick list. Basically every Honda makes their grade.

As to the Car Talk guys; Tom & Ray both have degrees from MIT. Don't be fooled by their demeanor. I've been a fan from the beginning. Whenever they get thistype of question they usually reply; "So, Dawg from California, what kind of slightly used Toyota automobile were you thinking about?" Then they'll ask about weather and possible mention Subaru or newer Volvos.

Toyotas are da bomb, for rizzle. Of course the only one I ever had was a '76 but it ran for an eternity and survived three totallings. They don't die, much like true soldjas (Master P reference, not Iraq, don't get panties in a wad)

We have a Toyota Matrix, if the reader wants something in the PT Cruiser form factor (i.e., what a previous generation would have called a station wagon). The Matrix is basically a Corolla wagon, and so should be about as bullet-proof. We got about 25 MPG for a short winter commute (enough time for the car to get warm before we pulled into the work garage). Last summer, on the highway, we got a hair under 40 MPG. Not bad for having fold-down seats and being able to schlepp stuff.

Staying with the Japanese models, the Honda Civic-based wagon would be the Element ("Bradley Shopping Vehicle"). My brother worked at a Honda dealership for about a year, and was nervous about the large number of moving, interlocking plastic parts, though. I have some friends who love their Subaru Outbacks, also.

We also have a used Honda Civic, which has had problems, but this is mainly due to stupid ricer kids being the previous owners. They actually managed to loosen some bolt in a suspension arm, found that their intended mod was too hard, and did a half-assed job of putting said bolt back in place. A couple years ago, I was toodling along, made a turn, and had one of my rear wheels basically come off. Luckily it was a local street -- I don't want to think about what would have happened on a highway -- and the dealership was able to fix it, though it required unibody repairs.

Anonymous said...

Oh, further wagon-y things would be the Toyota RAV4 -- the Corolla SUV form factor -- and the Honda CR-V -- the Civic SUV form factor.

If one wants to buy American (for whatever that actually means, given the origination of parts in a global automobile industry), the Pontiac Vibe is basically a differently styled Toyota Matrix.

Anonymous said...

If I were buying a used car a Honda Civic would be my choice. It's the only car that can last more than 100k miles in Michigan (salt, bad roads, rain & snow turn cars into shitheaps in 5 years here).
I fleece new ones for half the price of a new car payment with sweet GM discounts (the Michigan disposable car plan).

Anonymous said...

@ Cordwainer Bird:

Subarus are good cars, but getting a decent used one at a reasonable price is difficult. Most fall into one of two categories. The first kind is a year or two old and has 10 or 20k on it. The owner traded it in because he or she never really liked it, and it costs almost as much as it did new. The second kind has 250k miles or more and is on the market because the wheels are about to fall off.

I buy Japanese because it's what I know and because I buy cars that are more than a couple of years old, and I think Detroit's only recently if at all started turning out stuff that'll hold up in the long run. Among the Japanese makes Honda and Toyota are the best, followed by Subaru, Nissan, and Mazda. Mitsubishi is to be avoided.

Anonymous said...

Forget the PT cruiser -- underpowered equals quick engine failure. A Chrysler, bottom of the old big three. Any Honda (best) or Toyota is good, sure, boring too. But you can also do work on them yourself, which will save you even more money.

Sprezzatura said...

The Vibe is built at the famous NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA. That place is literally a business school case study of how a Toyota/GM partnership turned an American factory & its employees around.

Literally as in, when I was in b-school, we studied NUMMI in my Systems class and even went to tour the factory.

Anonymous said...

I too have a Toyota Matrix. They're roomy inside and get excellent mileage. The best part is the way the seats are styled. You don't have to go down then get up into the seat when you get in the car. This is especially good if you are gonna take a grandparent or mobility impaired individual somewhere. It's especially nice for those with bad knees.

You can also get them in an AWD model, but you sacrifice MPG.

Also the "lift back" storage area is covered in hard plastic, which is a godsend as far as keeping it clean. I had an entire case of diet soda explode back there, and it took about 5 mins to clean.

Current car is 97 Corolla. It's wonderful. Paid $6K cash for it in 2002. Had 88000 miles on it when I got it. Other than a broken starter, no repairs necessary. I just turned over 90000 miles last week. I don't have to drive a lot.

Previous car was 88 Corolla. Paid $3K cash for it. One repair only while I owned it. Head gasket. Beautiful car.

Before that had an old Nissan Sentra. I forget which model year. Great car. Joy to own. Got hit from behind. Totalled. Very nice settlement. Brief time in hospital, though.

The only option I demand from a car is that it runs.

My wife has a '99 Accord EX sedan (~95k) and I have a 02' Accord EX coupe (~54k). Both are great cars. With a V6, they don't get great gas mileage (22-24 mpg), but its acceptable. We've had the '99 since 04/05 and the '02 since 04/02. No major maintenance issues (we just had to replace the timing belt on the '99, but that was a normal, preventative expense IMHO).

Our present plan is to basically drive both cars into the ground. However, we would consider a hybrid at some point, to be driven by whomever has the longer commute. Our plan would be to look to sell the '02 first, even though its newer, because its resale value is nearly twice that of the '99. So when we go on long trips (down to see my parents in Marin, about 100 miles each way, door to door), we usually take the '99 in order to minimize the mileage on the '02. My commute to work is only about 6 miles each way, so I've been putting less than 10,000 miles on it a year.

So yeah, I'd definitely go Honda. Or Toyota. I'd consider a Hyundai if it were new, but I'd have reservations about buying anything pre-2004 (even though the body styles didn't chance from 03 to 04, apparently Hyundai tweaked something that made their vehicles much more reliable according to CR).

Personally, I don't think that CPOs are often very good deals, especially when you figure in the (generally) higher cost of financing a pre-owned vehicle and a lower resale value down the road. When my sister was looking at Civics, she found that the difference between a brand new and a CPO with less than 30k was less than $2k. On a 60 month loan (I know, I know), the difference in total interest paid would be $1600. If you can pay cash, then CPOs might represent a good deal. But if you're financing, then I think that buying new often represents a superior option, because the high rate of depreciation in the first few years of a car's life usually isn't reflected in the CPO price.

Next, when buying a car, before you actually purchase it, go through the exercise of imagining yourself as a prospective buyer of it five years down the road. If you were going to be it used in five years, would you be more interested in a standard silver, white, or charcoal, or in a loud yellow? Would you really care or be willing to pay more for all the little dealer add-ins? If not, then don't get them today unless you see it as essential to being able to use the car today. If you anticipate that you would avoid a car in a trendy color or not pay more for frivolous additions, then most likely your future buyer won't either.

One final thought: if you are considering a full-size truck or SUV, hold off a few more months. In all likelihood, gas will be setting new records this summer (again). So this July and August will represent a perfect storm for purchasing a truck, especially if you are planning on buying a domestic one because Toyota's new Tundra is going to cut into Ford and GM's sales. At the same time, this summer is not the time to buy a hybrid, but this winter (especially around Christmas) might be.

A couple things from a seasoned PR vet.

1. Review of "affiliate crew's" website does not show the press release that was on PR Leap.

2. Affiliate crew's PR man is a guy named Ray Wheaton.

3. The only individual quoted in any affiliate crew press release is a guy named Ryan Stevenon - a director at the company.

So, a couple of things:

A. Nigel issued a press release, that was obviously not "corporate approved" release, therefore it is not listed in press release section of the affiliate crew website.

B. Having "Mark Swaby" an account executive quoted in a press release probably was not a good thing.

I know people who've been fired for such offenses.

Keep in mind that these small SUVs like the RAV4 typically have the spare mounted on the outside rear door. There is no bumper, and if you are rear-ended at even a slow speed, the tire will push into the door and ruin it. That's a $1500 repair.

General thoughts:

1) I'd avoid an out-of-warranty German car like the plague...
2) Hondas and Toyotas are great cars, but not a great value to buy used because they hold their value so well. It's good if you're selling a late model one, but bad if you're buying.
3) For the most part, I've found that Mazda and Nissan have similar bulletproof reliability, but lower resale values than Honda or Toyota. My used Altima was the most dependable car I've ever had.
4) I know the conventional wisdom is that leases are bad, but for someone who likes to trade vehicles frequently, it's cheaper to find a manufacturer-subsidized lease, because they inflate the anticipated resale value used to calculate the lease in order to move product.

Oh, and, one more thing...

My final exams are over the next two weeks, and after that I start studying for the bar exam (in July). I'm probably going to take a hiatus from the whole Exurbannation / IAFF saga until then. I may pop in from time to time, but I'm not sure at this point. The blogs have been an enjoyable, entertaining experience so far, though. Maybe after the bar exam is over I'll be able to come out to Cali for Casey's trial!

For commuter, Honda Civic or Accord, Toyota Camry. More money used up front, but good mpg and value retention.

For an SUV, who knows. Anything that gets over 20 mpg should be more than sufficient.

Orson Buggy said...

Thanks, R-Dawg, for giving in to my request and starting this thread.

Folks, I used to be Nadia Belemi. Thought I'd just start a new email addy and end the gender confusion at least.

I'm the one who's thinking about getting a used car. My present ride is a company vehicle. It's a 2004 Freightliner Mid-roof Century with the 12.7 litre, 425 hp Detroit engine with a 10 speed auto tranny that averages 6.35 mpg depending on what I'm hauling and the terrain. So, I've got some experience with Daimler-Chrysler products. It's not that bad of a truck but I'd like something smaller I can use when I'm home that I can park in front of my house, drive to the store and restaurants, etc...

I live rather south of the mason-dixon line, so winters are not much of an issue, though I have family and friends in Ohio that I'll want to visit every December. I have no intention to deliberately drive off a road, so 4wd seems unnecessary. Sometimes I think I want a mid sized, extended cab pickup (Tacoma, Ranger, et al). V8's need not apply, but I could do with a Sedan instead. I don't have a boat or trailer and the only time I ever expect to tow anything would be if I move and the most I'd want to tow is an 8' uhaul trailer. I mean, I spend most of my time with a 53' trailer following me. Why would I want to pull something for fun (and not get paid for it)?

I generally drive cars until their demise. I've had good luck with 'program' cars: Lease returns or former rentals that are 2 years old, nicely equipped, have factory warranty left, less than 35K on them, and have an extended warranty available. And with carfax, you can find out the history on them. Generally, with me, the time on the warranty runs out before the miles do.

My last car was a Grand Am. I'm thinking of something a step bigger (maybe a Grand Prix) though I might want to check out a G6. I'm a little too old and rotund (though I have lost 27 lbs in the past 6 months) for a subcompact these days. I'm not a fan of SUVs and I have no family to haul around. I'd consider a bike except no room for groceries, my guitar (custom built Martin), and forget about driving it to Ohio in December.

To add to my confusion, let me toss these in:

1. I have a line on a 03 or 04 Ford Focus. My roommate knows the owner. The present owner is selling it because she's 75 or so and is too old to drive. It's fairly loaded (no sun roof) and has 7K on it. She literally only drove it to Synagogue on Fridays. I only have 4 issues with it (sight unseen): 1)It's a Ford, 2)It's light metallic green, 3)It's got a wing on the trunk (Is oversteering that much of an issue with some front wheel drive cars?), and 4)there's probably no factory warranty left.

2. Another thing to toss into the pot is that my company hauls parts to GM assembly plants. So, as a "GM Supplier", I get some sort of discount on new GM products. I need to find out if you work out your best deal than toss the discount at them or announce the discount and take or not take what they offer.

So far, what I've gathered is to look long and hard at Hondas and Toyotas. I've been advised by a retired Volvo engineer that 1)look for a PT Cruiser with the turbo and 2)If I can get over that nameplate, except for the engine, tranny, and body, a Ford Five Hundred is a Volvo for $20,000 less.

Please, keep your info coming it. Unlike certain Snowflakes we know, I'll take seriously any advice and suggestions I read.

Orson Buggy said...

Oh, I want something that'll last, so I guess we're talking reliability. I don't mind getting 6.35 mpg when the company pays for it, but since I'll be fueling this out of my own wallet, economy is a good thing. I don't need something super fast or powerful. Max would be a 3.6 litre 6. I want AC so I suspect I'd need at least a 2.0 litre 4. I want an auto tranny and power windows, locks, mirrors. Oh, and take it from me, everyone wants cruise control. As for radio, I'd prefer something with an Aux input jack for my Sat Radio and MP3 player. Or a cassette player; I have the adaptor.

Need more info? Ask. I can answer questions too, unlike some people.

The doc is over 300 pages, so here's the skinny: Algae (the swimming pool kind) can produce as much as 60% body weight of glycerides (oil), which can simply and easily be turned into biodiesel. Process needs brackish or seawater, sunshine & pumped-in carbon dioxide.

Maybe he's a mad scientist?

3)It's got a wing on the trunk (Is oversteering that much of an issue with some front wheel drive cars?)

No. The wing is purely cosmetic. The Focus is the first thing out of Detroit to really appeal to the "sport compact" crowd, who are into that sort of thing.

I hear that they're decent cars. They're pretty foreign for a domestic car -- I think the engine is from Ford's European division, and I suspect a strong Mazda influence on the body style. I can't speak to the reliability, but I'm sure you'll do your homework there.

Anonymous said...

Hi Orson,

I would advise not to discount compact cars due to interior space. A lot of them have high visibility seating like an SUV and are quite spacious inside. I am taller and larger than most and don't have any problem with my Toyota Matrix. I also checked out the Honda Fit and Mazda 3 5 door with a friend and they were quite roomy. Of course, there probably wouldn't be any used ones, since they are newer models.

Toyotas and Hondas sell for way too much used. The Regal has a 3.8 liter V6 so you should get good performance and an ok 25-30 mpg. If I was ready to change my vehicle and was going for frugal, this is the one I would get.

Maybe someone will bail me out. Maybe I'll win the lottery, Maybe Elvis will come down from a spaceship and hand me a check for $200,000,000.

Anyone know how those little spams got through after his last post?

And as for this Anti-bob blog, I'm sort of irritated by it. Dawg, I know you probably don't even want me bringing it up, but I personally don't give a shit. You didn't steal anything, you made a mistake and most importantly yesterday you didn't ignore it, you stood up to the DWAD we all know is behind it.

Anyway, their big mistake was shooting the big load on day one. So I guess that's pretty much the end of that. After that it's just your speling they can mak fun uf.

@ Anon 6:48pm

My favorite part of his little pity party:

"maybe I’ll keep it and take on a partner to handle the management of this thing"

Notice how whenever he brings up gaining a "partner" he envisions that person getting stuck with all the actual work? What a douche.

My wife and I went to a few open houses today in Elk Grove. They were open from 1-4pm. We got to the first one around 2:30pm and judging by the cookie plate, we were the first ones there. They were nice homes (probably too small), but you could smell the desperation on the realtors from a mile away. The first one especially didn't seem at all interested in selling us the home that we were visiting (and she was showing) but instead recruiting as clients. Lovely lady, but if I had been the homeowner, I'd have been ticked on her concentrating more on recruiting buyer clients than actually selling the home. In fairness, we did say that we were mostly just interested in getting a feel for the neighborhood and that this house was probably a little too small (it was ~1250sqft, we'd probably want a 1500-2000sqft home).

The last house we went to was actually pretty nice, although horribly overpriced (if listed at $100k less than we might be interested). It was 1500sqft ranch on a 8500sqft lot. But while the realtor was telling us about the virtues of that property being against a drainage canal and how quiet the property was, a train passed by. Turns out we were less than two blocks from the tracks (I hadn't had a chance to really research any of these, we just went to ones that were advertised in today's Bee). It was pretty funny to see her try to backtrack.

We won't be buying at any point in the next 12-18 months, at least. We just wanted to get a feel for a couple of neighborhoods that people had told us were good values. Fortunately we were able to step around the issue, but there's no way in hell that I'm paying $210/sqft in the same area where $110/sqft was fairly common five years ago. For the right home on a good-sized lot in the right location, maybe $150/sqft.

Strategy right now: just enjoy our cozy apartment, save, and wait for the market to come to us.

Now taking bets on what the excuse will be for doing nothing with the pool...

There is no way he fixed the problem. 1) He has no electricity at the site, so he would need to rent a generator, which is loud and would attract unwanted attention. 2) It would take a few hours for the bleach to work before pumping.... or could he skip the bleaching if he could pump the water out? 3) He has no place to dump the pool water. And of course 4) It's manual labor. He sits on his butt and whines. Under no circumstances will he do any actual work.

And at any rate, he posted on his blog at 6:18 PM. It's a good two hour drive back from Modesto when you're stuck in one traffic jam after another, so he must have left Modesto around 3:30 or 4. Far too early if he was actually trying to do something about the pool.

I doubt he ever went down there. So now he's looking at a $1000/day fine from the Mosquito Abatement people,

Santa Clara County Mosquito Abatement goes after a cemetary

*plus* the expense (and OMG actual work!) of actually doing something with the pool.

(BTW, why do people have this idea that in-ground pools are lined with plastic liners that would get sucked up by a pump? I've never seen that, not even in those temporary above-ground pools. In-ground pools have tile and concrete. Above ground pools have rigid side walls).

Anyway, since in Snowflake's eyes debt is just unrealized potential, more debt is good. Credit is free money, his to play with however he sees fit on a whim. It's not real, you can pay it back whenever you feel like it, or never, whichever works for you. And you can buy anything, even a unibrow hirsute wife!

The more debt he has, the more potential unrealized and "untapped income" he sees, and the bigger the payoff will be once he does hit it big. So sitting on his butt is *precisely* what he needs to be doing most right now. If he were to work, it would diminish his debt, er, unrealized potential, so no work for Sweetums. It's so sweet, it's allgood!

What's the deal with Casey? Is he pouting because we disrespected his blog? Are we all punished or something?

@ Anon 8:16

You're right, and I'm stupid. Whoops. :) So why would anyone think using an unregistered made-up name would cause Nigel to hunt them down and harass them?

Just make up a name so we can tell you anons apart. I fail to see how this is dangerous.

Let's talk about the idea of anonymizers, or just turning the modem/router/computer off for five minutes and getting a new IP address. You really think one pissant nobody whose every venture has been funded and supported by his mother has the wherewithall to harm you? If so, just use an anonymizer.

Here, start with this:

Tor anonymizer for Firefox 1.5 and up

----

Also, all you anons: the problem is, we don't care about Dawg's DUI . You're trying to trumpet this and running around screaming it at the top of your lungs, but we don't care. You can't post it elsewhere, because Rob isn't well-known enough, and there's no point in repeatedly posting it here, because, well.... yeah. We don't care. So what are you gonna do? You have nothing you can do with this not-earth-shattering information.

Casey's just mulling some things over. He's actually got some real opportunities to consider.

I'm going to go look at my new Boxster before I go to bed.

Nigel,

I'm only going to address why I don't give a rat's ass about the Rob's DUI once.

If Rob started a blog about sobriety or safe driving and was continually being arrested for DUI, then he'd be a hypocrite. On the other hand, if it was a single, non-recurring instance (which by all accounts, seems to be) and he didn't try to make a name for himself extolling the virtues of sobriety, then it's simply an instance of very poor judgment. Show me evidence that Rob REGULARLY and REPEATEDLY endangers himself and others, and I'll be among the first to condemn him for that. But so long as its a single offense that occurred back in 2004 (and the record that were dug up states that he has no prior offenses) and he's paid his debt, then I'm inclined to accept Rob's explanation and leave it at that. We all make mistakes. So long as we repent, accept the consequences, and don't repeat them, then we all need to just move on.

On the other hand, Casey has flaunted his reckless and illegal activities (liar loans and other schemes) and has shown no interest or effort in reforming himself as a productive member of society.

When I first started following the Casey Serin story, it appeared at first that he was just a naive kid who got suckered by the gurus and that he was serious about turning his life around and making amends as much as possible. Six months later, it's clear that he has no interest in ever bothering with honest work and will do anything to avoid the consequences of his bad decisions. Furthermore, if lenders allowed him, he would almost certainly defraud them and any partners for as long as possible. Until he demonstrates sincere remorse for his crimes and genuine interest in reform, he's a worthless excuse for a human being. As you, I, and pretty much everyone familiar with his story know, that starts with him getting a real, honest job to cover his living expenses and repay whatever debt he cannot be discharged by BK, foreclosure, renegotiation, etc.

So in summary, Rob made a very serious mistake over three years ago. According to your own records, it was his first offense and he has not repeated it since that time. In terms of contrition and reform, he has redeemed himself AFAIC. The same cannot be said of Casey.

What self-respecting adult California male DOESN'T have a DUI nowadays?

And who cares anyway? We are Haterzz because Casey is a FREAK! Having a DUI doesn't make you a freak... unless, of course, you have 2.2Million in fraudulent debt, a history of failed ponzi schemes and a blog documenting it all.

Whoa! Leave the PC to watch SOPRANOS (Hi Tony) and a few other things, and I miss tons of real-time drama.

The weekend parting shot:
NIGEL IS MISTER CLEAN!

Any and all Casey Fannnnnnnn contributions to the Casey web-mythos are released into the wilds of the public domain to be used forever for free, amen, the end, etc. Even Casey himself is welcome to "monetize" them.

And what's with the name: Nigel Swaby

Is it just me or are all these get-rich-quick guys immigrants.

Hey foreigners: Maybe in your countries you have to rip people off to make money, but here in the USA you can actually use education and hard work to make real money honestly.

"What self-respecting adult California male DOESN'T have a DUI nowadays? "

Well I don't, for starters.

FWIW, that line of defense--that DUI's are trivial offense--doesn't sit well with me. A few people that I knew growing up were killed in their early/mid-20s (one as a victim, one the driver) and a classmate of mine in high school lost her 17 year-old brother during our first week of high school. She was devastated. So please, do not say that DUI is not a serious offense. Personally, I find that as asinine as Casey claiming that everyone lied on loans. That's bullshit to the point of being offensive and insulting to one's intelligence.

The difference between Rob and Casey isn't in the severity of their crime (and I'll agree with Nigel that DUI can be considered worse than mortgage fraud), rather that Rob's was an isolated incident for which he immediately took responsibility for and did not repeat. Same cannot be said for Casey, IMHO. That's the difference between the two--not that Rob's DUI isn't a serious offense.

@walt526 -- yep, that pretty much sums it up. A DUI is nothing to be proud of, but I'd bet that the vast majority of us has done something equally if not more stupid at some point in our lives. I know I have.

Moving on.

Actually, I don't care about a DUI on somebody's record. Not so many people are so offended by this anymore, unless he wants to become president or something. Oh never mind.

Rob didn't take responsibility for it. He paid a fine. He spent three days in county jail, but now he blames some imaginary pills and the government as the real reason he got convicted. He was the victim.

The government are Robdawg haterz.

In summary since Tony Soprano isn't around, Rob Dawg still fucks pussy, Nigel Swaby still fucks sock.

walt526, I've got to say that I agree with you wholeheartly.

And sorry to hear that stopping by some open houses in Elk grove went so good.

Hey Nigel, where were you born? Don't say the USA because we don't name kids here Nigel.

Random Thoughts: Why are the two biggest spam scam locations Russia and Nigeria? Why is Casey from Russia and why does Nigel sound like the country Nigeria? Is it all coincidence?

flailing forward said...

I'm pretty sure that's coincidence. I haven't seen anything that suggests Nigel is an immigrant.

Nigel,

I think that you are splitting hairs on the "taking responsibility" and I don't really want to get into the game as his apologist (he doesn't need my help, and I don't really have an interest in it). Can we settle on the term that he "paid his debt to society"?

Showing up for court dates, promptly paying a fine, and/or doing jail time or community service constitutes "paying one's debt" as far as I'm concerned. Furthermore, not repeating a first time mistake demonstrates contrition and an dedication to reform. YMMV, but it's a no-issue in my opinion.

This DUI nonesense really needs to be put to rest. In California, it is quite common and an easy source of revenue. I've known a number of perfectly respectable people who have had DUI's.

FF, I'm sure he's not from Nigeria, but "Nigel Swaby" is 1st generation at best.

Tell us Nigel! Tell us the truth! What's your VISA status bro? Did you get that H-1 selling olympic pins or did your brother file the paperwork to bring you over?

El Gabo, Nigel was born in Jamaica according to an entry on his blog.
