Sacramento Bee Screws Up (Again, Sigh)

What ever happened to responsible journalism?

Why didn't the reporter's BS detectors switch to overload? Casey Serin's actions were no more "failed real estate investment" than bank robbery is a clerical overdraft error. He is a blatant and brazen criminal bragging about how he's defrauded banks, insurance companies, investors, friends, family, credit card companies, even Google. His actions have raised taxes in 3 states, lowered property values, removed needed housing from useful service, and will eventually cost us all millionsin prosecution and cleaning up his mess. He openly admits to everythimg he is accused of and more. Rather than feed his pathological need for attention the Bee's resouces and reputation are far better served finding out why this dangerous criminal remains free and comitting more crimes.

Count me as another "hater" coming out of the lurk.

We had dinner with friends, one of whom is a mortgage broker. He said that only 3 percent of fraud cases are prosecuted. I went on at some length about CS, but Friend countered with an example of a guy in Texas who has at least 43 properties using straw buyers and the guy's walking still around free.

Depressing.

The reporter's BS detectors didn't go off because he's not a reporter -- he's a columnist.

He has to fill about nine items every week, so he really can't be spending more than half a day on any one of them.

But I'm sure that when Casey's prosecution "costs us millions," the Bee will be most happy to cover it.

Clearly we won't be able to go after the parents for ailure to instill morals. Nor is the California educational system likely to receive their comeuppance. Evan all the people that we trust to preserve the American social contract; justice, fair play, equal enforcement of the law, etc. are not going to face their failures. But... what about the fraud prosecutors? Come on. He's been confessing to massive fraud with overtones of conspiracy with no intervention? Sure, go after Casey for everything but go after our prosecutors for their complicity in everything that's transpired in the last six months.

"Friend countered with an example of a guy in Texas who has at least 43 properties using straw buyers and the guy's walking still around free."

Yes but did this guy in texas create a blog, detailing every criminal activity he committed, and did he piss off a Legion of rabid bloggers that would love nothing better than to watch his downfall? I think not.
I don't know this guy in Texas, couldn't care less, but Casey, oh Casey, YOU we KNOW.

I was innocently reading the New York Magazine today and was reading an article about youngster's who put their lives on the internet and guess who was quoted: yes, our famous Casey... and I quote...

A lot of people wonder, "Aren't you embarrassed? Maybe it's naive but I'm not going run from responsibility. Once you put something online, you really cannot take it back he points out You've got to be careful what you say- but once you say it, you've got to stand by it. And the only way to repair it is to continue to talk, to explain myself, to see it through. If I shut down, I'm at the mercy of what other people say."

On page 102...for those of you who read the New York mag.

He can use it 15 min of fame to distract himself from reality for only so long. Within the next 3-4 months all the properties will have been auctioned off and the unsecured lenders will be the new wolves at the door. Even if he can BK out of that he faces judgments from lenders that he cannot BK out of. It will take a year or more for the full disaster to unfold and he will have crawled back under the rock he came from.

SPEAKING OF BLATANT CRIMINALITY, I happened to gaze into my handy crystal ball today to get a glimpse of what's in store for Casey. The crystal ball took a snapshot of his most disturbing future moment -- 10 minutes after he meets his two cellmates "Tank" and "Tiny":

http://www.geocities.com/tommy_hill_1999_99/caseyjail.jpg

Too Tasteless? ;-)

Anonymous said...

I honestly don't see Casey getting any jail time. If he had only taken out liar loans for one house, would any of us really care that much? I wouldn't. I realize that he took out numerous liar loans in short succession, clearly with the intent to get as many as he could from the banks before everything showed up on his credit report and the banks cut him off. That definitely makes him a criminal in my book. But he spread all of them out over four states.

If I recall correctly, he had one property in Texas, one in Utah, two in New Mexico, three in Sacramento, and one in Modesto. He got rid of one of the NM homes and one of the Sacto homes. The UT home is still sort of wrapped. Why would the local DAs in TX, UT, or NM bother prosecuting him? It's only one home in each of their jurisdictions. The Sacramento DA is probably the only one who would even consider doing anything about him, but then again it's two homes.

The only way I see any justice being done is by Casey getting no leniency in bankruptcy and having to deal with those consequences for the next decade. The worst I can see him getting even if he were charged is probation. Like OJ, I think Casey's going to skate on the criminal charges. Hopefully, also like OJ, they will be able to hit him where it hurts, in the dollars.

Anonymous said...

He can crawl under a rock or a cave, you will still be able to identify him because there will a bunch of feet sticking out of his ass

Well Judge you are assuming that lwayers actually do anything becuase of justice (look up OJ proceedings and the fame hungry judge ito) what the DA's will get however is ratings, airtime, and fame for putting this con artist with so much notoriety in the pen.

The columnist also didn't detect BS because the New Journalism is about Finding the Narrative, not about truth.

So the Narrative, to Casey's story, isn't "The Housing Boom was fueled by shady practices and is going to go kaboom," but was 'Oh, the housing boom is a wonderful opportunity for regular people to become rich (ie: live the American Dream), but look what happened to this immigrant kid who only wanted to Live The American Dream but was Led Astray."

Its the same reason I only watch the Olympics on Canadian TV anymore. If I have to sit through one more "And then she had to get braces in 4th grade and everyone made fun of her, so she took up polo to have something to feel special about and now she's leading our team to victory" sob story "personal interest" piece I'll scream.

Anonymous said...

PS: Casey doesn't just "admit to everything he is accused of."

He honestly doesn't GET that what he did was wrong.

That part bugs me more than the fact he's likely to get away with it.

And he's part of a whole generation of kids who think there's nothing wrong with cheating if it gets you what you deserve. And think that they deserve the bling bling lifestyle just by the fact they were born.

As always they were cheering everyone onward and upward to untold wealth and doing a heckuva job pitching the great opportunity of MEW.

Makes me want to puke even more than CS's situation because I know the MSM stoked the speculative fires over real estate for MILLIONS of dumba$$es like our FFF. Now us responsible types will end up paying the bill.

The End Game looks to be at hand, just as the Big Game has ended.

Here we are in February. The most expensive house Casey has, the Guadelajara Dr. house in Rio Rancho, comes up for auction on February 14th. Maybe Casey will pull another "Hail, Mary!" and get a one-month delay, as he did for Muncy in Modesto.

(By the way, that delay on Muncy also comes to a head in the next 2 weeks.)

Meanwhile, notices on the two Sacramento-area houses were filed in October-November, so they're wending their way toward auction.

And the deals with both Savvy Chris (Nouveau Riche University) and Duane LeGate have fallen apart. Casey has already borrowed all he can, I am surmising, from his relatives.

This will likely be the month that the Money Runs Out Completely.

Casey has said for at least the past 4 months that he wants to avoid bankruptcy. Sure, we all do. But the fact is that he's at least $500,000 in actual, owed debt (that is, not counting paper losses) and has a monthly nut of about $20,000.

(And yet he obsesses about getting a bank to refund an overdraft charge...while Rome burns.)

His blog appears to be trickling out, with moderation times getting longer and longer, with no major new news or screwball proposals (like forming a corporation to pay for his wife's debts, like buying a 100-unit apartment building).

Out of money, out of major publicity, out of blog entries, and, probably by a month from now, a couple more houses foreclosed upon.

The End Game. The king is plodding slowly around the board as the other side's knights and bishops and its queen are positioning for the kill.

Checkmate.

Looks like Casey's site is down ... maybe one of Duane's guys "accidentally" tripped over the network cable.

Anonymous said...

With respect to the SacBee columnist--I contacted him via email after the story first ran, asking about the absence of the fraud angle from his piece. His response indicated that he was aware of the fraud that Casey had perpetrated but at this point it was "alleged," and had not been proven in court, regardless of what he said on the blog. Papers are very wary of getting sued for defamation or libel.

In our previous election cycle in Salt Lake County, some individuals that had been treated very poorly by one of the local judges made a website to bring attention and exposure to the actions of this judge. It ended with this judge being voted out of office, which is a very RARE occurence here.

By the same token if enough people demand from the Sacramento DA to take action and put some consequences on his/her inaction, I think Casey will go to jail. It is up to us to demand that the DA protect the citizens from predators such as Casey....

Tim, can I please ask you to join the boycott of posting in IAFF. You are doing nothing more than enabling him and delaying his ultimate demise.

@ Tim

I think you're right about this being the endgame of Casey's RE "Empire." Before long the houses will be gone, and probably so will Galina.

But I think his blog could still have some life in it. The moderation time will probably never improve, and he will probably have at least another week of pointless mail-related posts or quiz result garbage ("What Star Wars character am I? OMG I am teh Death Star!!"). But he can still play the "hey, I guess you guys were right" card (whether he means it or not) to drum up new interest and suckers.

If he doesn't BK and tries to drop off the radar to avoid his debt, then his story will die. But if he gets prosecuted or declares bankruptcy I will still be interested. I want to know stuff like
- what his final debt total is
- can he BK
- how much (if any) of the debt gets discharged in BK
- how much he owes in taxes
- how much of that gets discharged
- how he feels about the organic toilet tank beer at Folsom

I'll actually be kind of bummed out if he just disappears and we never find out what the damage ended up being.

I get the same database connection error. Probably Casey screwing around and showing off his 1337 web skillz.

If the Need Lipo Ladies were really ballsy this would be a good time to go on the offensive now that he's lost his protector Duane.

I also had a good "Fun With Flippers" idea. Casey already owns that corporation from the corporate credit scam. Let's try to talk him into doing an IPO. If he only sells 1000 shares of Caseycorp at $100/share that will be more than enough to get his loans current and fund his 100 unit apartment complex downpayment. That should keep him occupied for a few days.

I was just watching a show about 2 guys in California who were trying to open a restaurant. Both failed actors - one owned his own hair salon, the other just graduated from cooking school. They hocked everything, bought a crack house to convert & open their business.

I should have known it would be a Casey-like experience when one explained the cuisine would be Soul Food. The other partner clarified, "Food for the Soul."

They seemed extremely clueless, no budget & had no money to speak of, juggled everything on credit cards.
The chef was trying to develop recipes the week before opening - the conconctions he described sounded horrific to me but the people from the "transitional" crack area seemed to like it. Opening night they had porta-potties out back for the customers. nice.

A major part of their money problems was one of the guys had a BK on his record. It was 4 months from being cleared but he was moaning that no one would touch him for a loan.

Just thought that was interesting & I wonder how many other stories like this are out there.

Carry on.

Positive thinking?!?! What!?

Casey needs positive action. Letting insurance lapse on properties is just inexcusable.

All you need to do is look at the rapacious rates that will be charged for lender-provided insurance, and you can see that "saving cash flow" by not paying for insurance is even worse than borrowing from CashCall.

This isn't even Real Estate 101; this is common sense. You can't call yourself a real estate investor if you succumb to lapses like that.

Then again, if you never intend to pay back the money anyway, does it really matter?

People have been asking a little about me in the context of the recent posts and new readership. I own a small SoCal computer services company and have in the last year divested of all real estate excepting personal use properties. Also if you are trying to keep it quiet for surprise, why mention it here..you know the simple one reads this blog...
I say bullshit, to the extent that is portrayed here...he may be getting investigated, but not to the extent laid out here. I don't really believe his ties either...maybe distant ones..like Is aid, they would have just shut him down a long time ago. Then again, maybe CASEY is staying in the spotlight to save his hide..can't just off him now can they?

Anonymous said...

Oh, Casey is going down. His fate was sealed, I think, when he published that stuff about the corporate credit scam. It then became clear that nothing would stop him BUT prosecution, which provided the justification for upping his case on the priority list.

He's made their job easy for them with the interview in which he confesses to the cash backs outside of closing and not revealing those contract addendums to the lender. I am sure that excon hopped right over to the feds with that. There won't be a trial - there'll be a guilty plea.

It is very possible that they have already gotten to him and he is now being used to cast the widest possible net. There's been a pronounced change of tone on his blog in the last few weeks.

With every note he signs the pit becomes greater. They'll collect evidence and then force him to give up his associates. If he doesn't squeal Galina will.

He could easily face a 20-30 year prison term now with what he has already confessed to on his blog. He'll do anything to ratchet that down and try to protect his wife, not to mention his family members who gave him money on these deals.

A group of long time readers and posters on EN do know who is investigating Casey. They know because they have filed the complaints and provided the documentation and have been contacted by "interested" parties.

They don't come on here and reveal every little detail they know. They thought the idea of this blog was to help bring justice, criminal and/or civil, to Mr. Serin.

What is hotter than a raging mad englishman?

If you really want to know, try calling a Scotsman like Gordon Ramsay an Englishman to his face...

(Glad to see you're getting Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares Stateside, though - it's a great show, isn't it? Have you had the one about the chef who couldn't even cook an omelette, or the one who, when sampling two different kinds of properly cooked pasts and a Pot Noodle, picked the last as his fave?)

prison loaf's right, the blog will die after the foreclosures.

There won't be any voluntary BK filing - no incentive and no way for the unsecured lenders to collect (he'll just ignore their letters)

As for anon 6:44's assertions, I'll point out, again, that there's no one tailing CS.

If he wants to drive to the border, abandon that POS Jetta, and walk into Mexico there's nothing to stop him.

Plenty of RE jobs down there as well (if you think RE fraud is bad here...)

It's clear you have to be a criminal on the order of Perry March to get deported from Mexico.
