A Little Beauty

"Ugliness is so grim, a little beauty can create harmony.

Anyone younger than about 40 has no idea how just one of her ideas forever changed Exurban America for the better. Her "Highway Beautification Program" failed but the intent was adopted nearly nationwide and today our highways are not tedious commercial advertising opportunities but rather scenic vista opportunities.

Plus -- She had a more interesting name than Lyndon Baines.

A paean to Lady Bird Johnson, huh?

"Highway Beautification" from a woman whose husband used to shoot game from the back seat of his Cadillac.

Wasn't a feature of this program getting prison work-gangs out picking up trash along the highways?

It's now called "Community Service"(used to be the "Chain Gang"...better singin' then).

Cryptic much?

At the time of their passing it is customary to highlight their achievements and likewise not dwell on their shortcomings.

Sharky, not prying or getting personal but are you old enough to remember or did you ever haer about driving the East Coast D.C. to Florida in the mid 60s? Calling the then situation visual blight is a kindness.

I hadn't caught the news about her passing yet when I posted.

Yes,(damn you!),I'm old enough,(barely),to remember when highways were linear trash dumps.

And when it was recommended to get a tetanus shot should you wade or swim in the Potomac.

Ahhh, mejustme, thanks for the reminder of Iron Eyes Cody. He was a few years later when that screaming liberal Nixon stuck it to all those heatless conservatives by forming the EPA.

Sometimes things that happen make you realize how fleeting life can be. While Casey runs around begging and trolling for 'sweet media', there are kids fighting cancer and parents trying to make sense of how they got dealt such a raw deal.

I used to follow the Casey story because it was aptly titled (on EN, I believe) irr-itainment...meaning it was so irritable but yet so fun to watch the trainwreck.

The utter hate some of the haters fomented towards that idiot I do not understand.
The utter disdain for an honest living and the incredible sense of entitlement from Casey I also do not understand. How someone can want media exposure more than his wife? I just don't get that...the idiot gains press exposure, but loses his credit rating, some of his friends, his reputation, his family and his wife. AND HE THINKS HE IS BATTING .500.

Guess what, chump? You're not.

I'll be labeled a hater and I don't care. I give up. I just found out a close friend's son has a brain tumor. Suddenly the casey-world and online bullshit doesn't seem as fun anymore.

Bad shit happens and makes me realize what is truly important. I hope the people reading this don't ever have to go through something like that to get their priorities straight. I will not judge casey more than I have already with this post, but suffice to say I now realize what is important, and part of that realization is posting it here so maybe, just maybe it might sink in for someone else without them having to go through HELL to realize this shit is UNIMPORTANT. I hope so, because then this rant will have been worthwhile.

I'm out.

Nice thread, Rob.

For the Highway Beautification Act and the National Wildflower Research Center, alone -- Lady Bird was okay.

Maiz,
Thanks for the reminder of the Wildflower Centers. I had forgotten. We forget lots of "good" things in the day-to-day partisanship and agenda battles.

Sorry to be off topic, but has anyone read the latest NAR forecast?
http://www.realtor.org/press_room/news_releases/2007/hef_july07_housing_prices_recover.html
"Home Prices Expected to Recover in 2008 As Inventories Decline"
So the NAR as written off 2007 now and is hoping for recovery in 2008. Almost everything in this release leads with the 2008 numbers.

Just curious, but is there anything wrong with shooting game from the back seat of a Cadillac? Would it be ok if it was a Ford?

Rob Dawg said...

ha3,
No problem. Things are back under control.

Yes, the NAR is serving a new flavor of kool-aid.

Think about what they are saying. They were wrong about 2006 and 2007 and refuse to use them to extrapolate two bad years into 2008.

Honestly they are only hoping people foreget their 2008 forecasts by the time they are current.

Casey's shutting down the blog! Again! I guess Mittens wins this one.
