"To what extent should justice end with flip-for-brains?"

I think the absolute minimum standard people want Casey to be held to is to "stop breaking the law". His illegal schemes have been ongoing, and this is quite frustrated.

Close behind that would be the requirement that Casey "stop borrowing money". In an ideal world, his impressive FICO would have all but put a stop to his borrowing, but Casey has repeatedly demonstrated his creativity in finding additional sources of funding. Unfortunately, he has progressed to the point where his borrowing is directly harming other people (i.e. Galina and Anna).

Those should be the fundamental commandments for our young hero:

"stop breaking the law"
"stop borrowing money"

Until he internalizes those, nobody can truly help him. Unfortunately, it may take judicial intervention to make that mantra stick.

Make no mistakes however, Casey is between a rock and a hard place. He is up to his eyebrows in debt. The normal advise for a person in his situation would be to declare bankruptcy and start over. After all, the law provides an out for people who honestly get overwhelmed by debt.

Tragically, Casey did not come upon his debt honestly. He committed fraud repeatedly and knowingly in order to borrow his $2.2 million dollars of "sweet leverage". Additional acts of fraud are suspected and may come to light. And those cruel, cruel, cruel statutes we know as "The Bankruptcy Code" contain one completely unfair provision that is proving to be Casey's undoing. Debt acquired through fraud cannot be extinguished by bankruptcy.

So, dear sweet Casey is stuck. His debt is his "rock". His ineligibility for bankruptcy is his "hard place". And the distance between said rock and said hard place is diminishing daily.

Instead of facing reality, Casey chooses to live in a fantasy land. He hallucinates grander and grander schemes with various "shades of grey" legality, whereby somehow he can leverage himself out of this dilemma and into the land of sugar and honey. It ain't gonna happen, he is only digging himself deeper, and he is now bringing those closest to him down as well.

Hence the need for intervention:

"stop breaking the law"
"stop borrowing money"

Only when Casey (willingly or unwillingly) begins to toe this line can a real way forward be found.

That way won't be pretty. It may involve prison, it may involve probation, it will involve a W-2 job, it will involve sacrifice, and it will involve debt repayment.

Casey will need a lot of help through what is to come. His family loves him, but he is alienating himself from them. Every professional who has gotten close to Casey to offer help has been driven away.

Casey doesn't think it is fair that other people are trying to tell him how to live his life. He thinks that only he can choose how he gets to live his life. But he doesn't understand something critical: 24-year old young men who fraudulently run up hundreds of thousands of dollars of unsecured debt don't get to keep the liberty of running their own lives. Sooner or later, the jig is up, and he will have to face the consequences.

The question is; "who gets to tell Casey how to live his life". The decisions Casey makes in the near future will help determine that. Worst case, it is a prison warden. Best case, it is his family and creditors. Most likely case, there will be judicial intervention involved.

The gears grind slow, but they grind fine. This debt will not be forgotten or fade away unattended. Casey will always be living in its shadow until he stand ups to face it, and his antics are only making the ultimate day of reckoning worse.

I was thinking about this possibility the other day. Snowflake was afraid to clear customs at SFO or LAX due to what might be waiting for him there so the next logical place would be SEA. Plus, it has the added bonus of being close to Canada. If it gets to hot here, it's simple to get to Cananda and be out of reach of U.S. LEO. He could probably do some major damage in a town like Victoria. Plus again, hookers are legal.

If anyone

@Murses

It can be anything you want. :) The photographers p there are beyond open minded.

In all seriousness, the work is artistic, with an erotic element, some is centered on stuff like that but it's all kinds of themes - like one I LOVE, a series of shots describing how to die from candy. Lots of goth stuff, vampires, body art, vnyl, rubber, and yes, pleather! ;)

No koi tho, you have to go to Tokyo for that.

So... Casey's jumping on his old hint from Dec/January-ish about fleeing to Vancouver? Hmmm... good one, Fliptard. Head out to yet another country w/a fairly airtight extradition treaty w/the US. Brilliant.

Or is Fliptard gonna try to shiver his frail little frame up the BC coast, through the Yukon, across Alaska, and hope that some Eskimo will ferry him across the Bering Sea to Siberia, and ultimately back home to the loving bosom of Mother Russia? Now that would be amusing!

That is what I am thinking. I haven't checked the flight schedules to se if he could have flown from AU or NZ, maybe lay over in Hawaii and clear customs and then on to SEA. Sure the East Coast trip was fun and kultural and stuff. Still there's places all over this great land I've never been . I was thinking about the Pacific Northwest. I've only been as far north as the Cali border. Is Washington State too far to drive? And how esay is it to slip across the border to visit Vancouver and B.C.? Of course we'll look at colleges so top shelf suggestions in the hard sciences are welcome. So, that's the question. Can we get away from all this Califonia madness in the Oregon, Washington, even British Columbia areas or have they already been Californicated?

I suspect from the regulars it's more a rueful grin and a grudging admiration: Rob played us, and he played us well. But y'know what? That's OK. Rob can be a right old tease sometimes: but he delivers the goods.

Similarly, Aaron/Michelle/HeyCasey trolled not just Casey but also EN: we swallowed the story of the turned-off supporter all too unquestioningly. Where's the backlash against Michelle? No: we were trolled, but we were trolled *well*.

The brakes on RE everywhere, it's just a matter of timing. The odds are very good that we've entered a twenty-year period of rising interest rates, and that will change expectations and behavior A LOT, but it will take several years before the trend is evident.

Real rates bottomed in 2003.

Dear Mouse and Pencil and StephanieJ,
I've seen photos a few years ago of the bizarre scene you two were discussing. More recently, I was watching one of my boys' favourite videos ("The Wiggles") and they had a musical number where 5 or 6 young girls showed up dressed in somewhat tight horse outfits and danced around shaking their butts at the camera. I puked in my mouth a bit at this, remembering the photos to which M&P is referring.

NR

PS The boys love the Wiggles but their tunes get sore on adults ears rather quickly; more specifically, the lyrics are stupid even for toddler songs.

And Casey wonders why people go all Haterz on him...

I agree it's not as impressive as Casey leaving Galina with tons of debt and potential jailtime for both.

Nor it as impressive as how Marty talked flipy in to paying Marty to screw Casey over even further.

Nor was it as impressive as how many illegal acts Casey confessed to in his audio recordings.

Yet, I, personally speaking on my own behalf, find it impressive that so few caught the subtext. I think it was fairly skillful. Either way, get a handle and people will take you seriously.

I'm sure Rob is having a great time looking at all the duplicate ip addresses posting under anony. I'm sure he has a rough idea as to who and where these students of rhetoric are coming from.

@NGB: CHJTS, Duane & LossMit. A number of times you guys have talked about Casey's intelligence.

I think the "personable" thing goes a long way. He is, in the immortal words of the SMH, "a likeable fast talker"; he's soaked up enough information to appear at least superficially informed; he's manipulative, but subtle about it, at least to those unaware of his tricks.

I can easily imagine he'd appear as charming and convincing in a short social meeting. I suspect, too, that as a manipulator he'd be quite good at steering such a meeting.

But the "so much damn potential" that LossMitPro credits him with? Like you, I'm not seeing it. Potential for *what*? The only endeavor he's shown potential for is further criminality.

Nigel's gone into Casey Ignore Mode, but he was notoriously an early champion of Casey's intelligence; his recent assessment was:

Casey does have some talent in marketing himself and making contacts. He has no fear of meeting people which makes him a natural born salesman, especially with making contacts, the hardest part of selling. He does know how to speak and respond under pressure, another valuable skill. He does know many aspects of running a Wordpress blog [...]. Casey definitely has some talent, but he has completely misused it.

We might also consider Bruce D. Collin's now much regretted use of "genius" to describe Casey...

I don't think it matters. Whatever revenue from his blog he's getting is probably going into a paypal account or some other account no one can get their hands on.

Totally agree. G had better have shut down the joint account by now if she wanted the $200-$300 in it. But I'm also sure it's a moot point. If she was so foolish as to have left it open, he'll have taken all of it and will never again make a deposit.

As long as the blog stays up and he gets a couple $K/month in ads, he'll live just fine in Seattle.

The only thing I believe that will get him back to Cal are the feds, or inter-state extradition; both of which are likely very slim. He may never be able to return to Cal again, but I'll bet that's just fine with him.

Anonymous said...

Another thing he has going for him is a rather large Uzbecki population between here in the PNW. That might work against him though if he isn't carefull. I agree, if he keeps the blog up, he can probably live here for quite a while while the heat cools in Sac. Plus, if it gets to hot here, he can be on the ferry to B.C. pretty quickly.

That article could not be more patronizing or misguided.

Teaching young employees how to find personal gratification in a job well done may also help them become better people and live happier lives.

You can't teach this and by college age it's a lost cause. Every generation has slackers and some of the worst are boomers. People take pride in a job well done because of their nature...age has nothing to do with it.

If Galina shuts down the joint account, Casey's chances of being able to open a new one are slim: he's got to be flagged pretty hard in ChexSystems by now, especially after stuffing Wells Fargo.

Unfortunately that doesn't stop him living off the advertising money in the PayPal account, via his PayPal ATM/debit card.

Ugh. He's here, dirtying up my city.

Seattle proper is pricy, if he's as snobbish as he comes across. (If he's not, I imagine there are still rooms for rent for almost ok prices.) Ultimately I don't think anything will happen, sadly. White collar crims just don't get the justice they deserve. The feds want at least $100k in theft before they'll even look at it and that doesn't mean anything will happen. The people that "lent" him the money for his various rackets you can bet are covering their ass the best they can. If they get called forward, other cases will be exposed for sure and that embarassment wont fly.

Fliptards post today showed his strategy. Fingers in his ears, LALALALALALA. He's probably going to keep running his blog as if nothing has happened. Don't be surprised if the mark villasenor posts and such disappear. He'll keep mooching off of people and living off blog revenue until he can work some "sweet deals". @ NoDebt re: NYT article--

As a Gen-Y member, most of the points in that article are correct. There's one point though that I think the author does a poor job of addressing, and that's the astronomical cost of college nowadays. For example, the cost of the exact same local state school that my parents and I both went to, 25 years apart, had quintupled in cost during that period of time. The author of the article seems to be lamenting the fact that kids who go to college nowadays are mainly doing it so that they can get better jobs at the end. Well, when even "cheap" state schools are nosebleed expensive and racing ahead of the cost of inflation, it would be stupid for most people of lower-to-middle-income backgrounds to go to college for any other reason. It's absurd to ask someone in their late teens/early 20's to take out tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt at the beginning of their adult life w/no payoff. While world travel is also an exhilarating/enriching experience, it's not worth running up massive debt early in life if it's not going to result in anything other than a few cool anecdotes followed by "I had a damn good time," which is what college mainly is nowadays, anyway. (Frankly, I saw it as high school, part II.) It was basically four extra years of pencil-pushing to hold a job that, while well paid due to the piece of paper I got at the end, is nothing I couldn't have done when I was 16 years old. Just saying that while the work ethic stuff in the article is largely true, the cost/benefit ratio of college today seems to be a big-assed white elephant that nobody seems to want to address seriously.

There was a post a couple topics back on the subject of 'narrative poisoning'. The idea, while not new in application to Casey, was worth reading (the writing was a little inflated, but anyway...) There was this part of Casey's last Talkshoe where, and this is a paraphrase, but he was asking, 'if I said I could get out of my debt and pay everyone back by traveling the world and telling my story- wouldn't that be crazy?' or 'you wouldn't expect me to just be able to pay off my debt by talking about it... riiiight?' One might say Casey's blurring of reality and fiction is representative of his crimes themselves... (the truth)

I always wondered how exactly it worked with PayPal. Isn't your PayPal account separate from you bank account? If the PP account is terminated it does not affect your bank acct or does it? When I used PP (long time ago) the money stayed in the PP acct and did not automatically go to your bank acct unless you requested them to. I'd be a little nervous to know that PP admins might have access or control over my bank acct.

Anonymous said...

Paypal has nothing to do with your bank account. Paypal allows people to send payments to another person via their bank account, credit card, etc. and the money gets deposited in your paypal account. You can then withdraw the funds via a paypal debit card, a check from paypal or a transfer to your bank account.

My personal feeling is that Casey will never go to jail. He'll just...well, do what he's doing now. But forever. He'll bum around, staying with "friends" and family until he pisses them off with his stupidity, or by staying too long, and is thrown out. He'll be the dead-beat relative that everyone half-forgets about because he only shows up once every 5 years or so when he needs something and has run out of any other suckers to give it to him. 5 years from now when Casey turns up to some family function Steve Serin's wife will say "I had NO idea you had another brother!" Eventually he'll "contract" some sort of mysterious illness with ill-defined and constantly changing symptoms that will let him live off social security and feel suitably short changed by life, in order to explain to his massive ego why he isn't more of a success. His ass will become permanently affixed on his couch, and his life will be filled with talk shows, as his waist slowly swells. Still, at least he'll never spread any Casey spawn, what with the enforced chastity such a life will bring.
