Why so defensive?

What 2 crooks told me over lunch

By Herb Greenberg
Commentary: "You cannot accept information at face value" [Marketwatch]

Antar was chief financial officer of Crazy Eddie, a New York electronics retailer that in the 1970s and 1980s claimed "our prices are inSANE" as it bilked investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars. He stayed out of jail by turning on several others, ...who claims to suffer from a bipolar disorder and serious insomnia. (I can vouch for the latter because his e-mails and postings on blogs come at all hours, mostly in the middle of the night.) "Criminals don't sleep," he explains.
...
A mistake, maybe, but one other people can learn from. "Do not trust verify," was his mantra as the meal began.
...
He adds: "Criminals are scared of skeptics and cynics," he says. "We are petrified when you verify our representations."

Here's an ugly scenario... what happens if The Casey Show comes to fruition, or if some idiot actually invests in him as he's claimed?

Would it save him?

My inclination is to say no; even if he does find someone to do a successful fix-flip job (in today's market, with today's prices, and he's not getting scammed), what's he going to make? $20,000? Divided by the number of investors?
Even $50k wouldn't help that much.

And what about The Casey Show? Would it be as unquestioningly pro-Casey as he'd want it to be, or are they going to have Stephanie and Ogg and Rob and Sputnik on there to make a laughing stock of him? And the whole point of reality shows is that they're cheap; the subjects usually get very little pay compared to an actor. What might he get out of it, in cash? Tens of thousands of dollars? Again, not touching the debt much. And since he's in no position to actually fix and flip, it'd probably be a pretty dull show.

And then finally, what about jail? If he has any kind of success, they'll have to act on him. And won't PRLinkie have something to say about his little contract?

The real reason for the Utah trip was a friendly game of baseball -- Nigel's playing "pitcher" and Casey's playing "catcher". :-p

Anybody who touches Casey at this point is going to eventually pay for a room full of lawyers regardless of guilt or involvement. Every DA in every jurisdiction is going to have to answer the question: "why didn't you do something?" They may be taking their time now but come election season...

Side note; I give Flickr two weeks before they throttle the Casey content.

From Barry Minkow's Wikipedia profile:

"Behind the scenes, however, Minkow's company was little more than a front to attract investment for a Ponzi scheme. Zzzz Best did not clean anywhere near as many carpets as claimed. It generated a fraudulent paper trail to fool potential investors. Interstate Appraisal Services was formed as a separate company to support this fraud. Minkow raised money by factoring his accounts receivable for work under contract. He hired reputable accountants and lawyers to boost his image. Upon indictment, he claimed that he had intended to form a legitimate business empire and pay back everything before he could be found out."

Sound familiar?

Rob Dawg said...

Benoit, I'll uhhh.... take your word for that. ;-)

Katie, EVERYTHING about Minkow and Antar sounds familiar. People were asking about Casey in a few years and I thought of these guys. Bernie Ebbers lost his appeal yesterday in the Worldcom fiasco, Ken Lay gone. Anybody who thinks Casey will get away with anything doesn't understand the power of the mob.

Haters,

Now that our trip is coming to an end, I have something to say.

Doing sweet deals with Casey has been very juicy. And do you know what's better than doing Wheatgrass shots with Casey? Doing protein shots.

Rather than make fun of someone when they are down, I do the opposite. I never leave by buddies behind.

It's been my observation that Snowflake has no intension of shutting down his "auto self destruct sequence". Seriously, this kid appears to be about as self destructive as they come. Recall the many times he claims to have failed to submit a short sale package in a timely manner. Hell, the very existence of his blog seems to show that he has it in for himself on some level.

So even if a show or investor came along that could save him, I strongly suspect that Snowflake would find some way to scuttle it.

Anonymous said...

Any show with Casey appearing will only exist to embarrass him. There's not a lot of money in his future. Only jail.

Watching something with him on it would be funny for a half hour or so. After that, it would just get old. Like his blog.

Anonymous said...

If Casey thinks a show is going to make him a star, I point to his appearance with Kiyosaki as proof the kid has no presence.

Also, when I have run small companies with friends we would always inflate our actual worth. It's done all the time. I know a guy who runs a small, one man company who always refers to himself as us (as in employees).

If some network were dumb enough to produce a show starring Casey, I will be writing every sponsor and pointing out this dork's toxicity.

The TV show is a joke.

There is no TV show. For a TV show to exist as we know it, it has to be pre-produced, shot, edited, and sold to an outlet to be seen. For every show you see on TV, there are dozens that have been passed over by networks and distributors. For those dozens, there are probably hundreds that never see the light of day.

(Dolph, if you're still snooping around, some clarity from someone in the entertainment biz would be helpful.)

"Making" a TV show is no big deal, just bring money. Not to mention the fact that there are plenty of production mills that work along the same lines as the "Become a Model Today!" lines, sucking star-eyed hopefuls into a chain of audition tape fees, headshot fees, etc.

Hell, about five years ago, I was "offered" a spot on a TV show about the exciting world of business sales, and Shatner was going to host! Joy! Excitement! And it's only going to cost $50k! What? See, the thing is, they got my name from a trade publication. They didn't know me, didn't know anything about me, other than what was in the trade rag.

A TV show? Yeah, right, whatever. Who's paying for it?

Okay, I've had it. You guys need to all shut up and stop hating on me. I haven't done anything wrong!

And stop calling me and Nigel gay. Just because we had some experimental sex in mormon country doesn't mean we're gay. We just tried stuff--just like he tried the wheat shot.

Galina did not leave me. She just went to stay with her mom indefinitely. It's for the best anyway 'cause I she doesn't get along with Nigel too good, and she'll take some time to get used to the idea of his living with us. We could really use the income he's providing and I could really use an ally against all of you hater jerks.

We're also thinking of investing in a B&B in Provincetown, MA. I hear the sand-dunes there are kickin'. And MA has lots of sweet deals. With my invaluable contacts, me & Nigel can make lots of money. We'll be rich, and you all are still going to be in your cubicles, paying off your stupid student loans.

And seafood is not meat!

I heard that Nigel and Casey are going to take a side trip to Wyoming, to look for sweet deals on Brokeback Mountain. just hope they use protection; and I don't mean "buckle up".

anyhow, looks like Casey will have a new cellmate -- Scooter just got convicted, and is facing jail time.

oh wouldn't that be sweet. Casey and Scooter in a 3 person cell with Bubba. Bubba would truly have a "sweet deal", and might even convert to Mormonism, since he now has two wives...

So, do we get a parallel post to Casey's Utah trip posting? I posted some comments, but who knows when they'll go through on his site. In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone knows what building that is with the globe in it (maybe the Wells Fargo building in downtown Salt Lake? nah--Casey's probably staying as far away from there as possible.)

Ogg the Caveman said...

It seems that most of the Casey bashing for the last couple of days is about gay sex. Is that a reaction to the trip with Nigel (who does set off the ol' gaydar, not that there's anything wrong with that) or are we running out of things to say?

I suspect a bit of both. Whatever the cause, I find the sheer volume of it a bit distasteful. We need Snowflake to do something new and spectacularly stupid so that we have something to talk about.

I mean, what am I supposed to say? "Ogg not eat at Macaroni Grill, and Ogg only caveman?" Seriously. I need new material.

Funny how the trip to Utah was a "success", but without any tangible results.

I guess Casey is still massaging those deals until they are ready to be juiced...

LOL @ Ogg.

Yes, I agree. His stuff is getting recycled and Casey doesn't pass anything I post. I guess words like Nigel butt buddy, Nigel reach around, and all the things I did to Galina while Casey and Nigel were playing butt darts just don't pass muster.

I've run out of things to say so I resort to gay sex. Well, not literally......

I know, that's the funny part. He tries so hard to negate the influence of his haters, and then totally panders to them by delibarately going to Macaroni Grill and Jamba Juice.

T said...

I hold a contrary view than most because I certainly hope Casey does get a television show. I also hope it's a HUGE success. In fact, it'd be the closest thing to work that Casey's done in the past year or so and in all honesty, his pre-pubescent girlish good looks are about all he's got going for him, so if he can find success in that, good for him.

Cause for real, it'll be the only way he'd ever even BEGIN to repay what he owes. And hopefully Cashcall would be the first of many creditors standing in line with their hand out.

It's obvious he wants to be a celebrity. I just hope that celebrity culminates in some loan repayments. At the very least, the more publicity he gets, the less likely he'll be to slip under the radar.

Ogg,

I honestly don't see you getting any new material. As one poster put it last night, this (Utah trip) is Casey's last hurrah and he knows it."
There is no fun kicking someone who is so far down the gutter he is truly circling the drain now to be washed away by loads of unbearable crushing debt.

The reason Casey made it fun to hate him is that he is an incredibly easy target or an 'easy lover'(ask Nigel). If he does come up with something new it will most likely be a variant of something old. The party is almost over everyone. Problem for Casey is that he's the only one who has to clean up.

Take a look at the pictures from the Utah trip, lots of little clues as to what he's up to in there. For what it's worth, it looks like Casey's been sniffing around northern Utah County, which is where the housing appreciation has been the highest (around 19.5%, maybe more), and where I *strongly* suspect that there's a lot of speculative activity going on (scratch that, if Casey's there, I *know* there's a lot of speculative activity going on.)

Also, those houses on South Mountain are a speculator's dream, McMansions with a view. Too bad anyone who's actually duped into living in one doesn't realize that they'll be all but stranded when big snowstorms hit, and that the wind up there blows *constantly*.

@Everyone,

I think the mission's aim has been fully exposed here:

To rile up the hatred on this board, to instigate a flood of traffic to his flagging blog.

Hell it was probably the best $7 Nigel ever spent, although I half believe there was no "G" and that Nigel himself was the money-man. The motel shot, STAGED. Too many things here make it obvious that this was a pure traffic play:

-Macaroni Grill

-Blue shirt both days

-Ultra gay getup and "organic hair wax" (was that something Nigel produced? Anyone remember There's Something About Mary??)

-Murse attached to shoulder even while eating

-Wheatgrass shots at Jamba

-Scoping out $2+ million homes

-Making fun of the locals Hick tendencies

-Eating blatantly non-vegan garbage

Trip to Utah was a success and yet nothing but photos to show for it. Now he'll lazily reply in the comments section to push traffic along from there, and Nigel will post something later to drive traffic on HIS site.

So obvious. Too bad we take the bait every time.

Honestly, what I'd like to see Snowflake do is declare bankruptcy, work to pay off whatever debts are not discharged (likely hundreds of thousands), and blog about the whole process. I think that would be very interesting, at least for a while. It would also make a great cautionary tale.

Won't happen though, not unless a judge orders it as a condition of his probation.

TK said...

Additionally, there may still be a speculative market, but nobody, not even a "money guy" is gonna put money behind snowflake despite the Subprime meltdown (and today's fairly apparent Sucker Rally).

I just took a peek at a house on flkr that KC is touting as being a discount at $2mil. Notice his referral to an "appraiser" who puts the value at $2.45. Wondering if the appraiser is one of Nigels friends.
You all must know that most appraisals produced for mortgage sellers are hardly worth the paper they're printed on. Most players in that game have goto appraisers who are nothing more than form fillers. It surprises me that the lenders and investors would accept these appraisals given that they back up risky loans (for reasons like no docs for instance, low credit score, etc) to begin with.

But for a self proclaimed real estate investor not to be able to derive a semi accurate market value
of a property is un acceptable. You'd think with the contacts that
Nige and Case have they could do a search of the MLS themselves, and also get some other info that is either on a public data base, or a for fee data base that one of their contacts have. It's pathetic if he's believes what the appraiser tells him for the value, the only thing that counts for him is if the number works for the loan to be approved. But a real player would know his market and wouldn't rely on a form filling appraiser to determine a market value for a give n property.

Nigel on IAFF:

I paid for the Jamba Juice. It was my treat. It was well worth the expense ($7.47, cash, no overdraft) to be able to tell Casey face to face to get a job. That’s something the “haters” would “kill and die” to do.

Oo, now we're having a contest to see who can be the most 133t h8t3r!

My entry:

On the Western Union send-money form, you can enter a message for the recipient. You can check a box to say that it's OK for the message to be read aloud. I want to send Casey $20 and a message to be read aloud: "Get a Job!"

@Anonymous 12:11

Seems obvious - the appraisal was high for another illegal "sweet" cash back at close situation, only a more significant amount than on previous deals and potentially enough to help him get the current monkeys off his back. Never mind they'd foreclose this property as well. He'd better get cracking before anyone gets wise - although he seems greedy enough to think the deal is not so sweet after all.

Eth Real said...

Note to stupid: If it is *WORTH* $2.45m, it would be selling for $2.45m. Ever heard of market value? It's what someone will pay for it and it is not worth $2.45 if you can get it for less than $2m. Even if it appriases. I guess they didn't cover that basic point in yoru $15,000+ edumacation.

BTW, hands up every siuccessful business person who takes photos of their busienss trips.... No hands? Hmmm. What a surprise.

Whoever said...

I agree with TK, there was no "G-man." Casey was flying solo with Nigel. All of the pictures were taken by one of them or the other of them (or the schmoe behind the Jamba Juice counter). Why is no one else in the Macaroni Grill? Anyway, what sort of moron would front a ticket for both himself AND Casey to go and galavant with Nigel and yet fail to appear in any of the photos? Why are all the photos a bunch of dumb stuff? If they were in "meetings all day" why do the photos indicate a lot of daylight variation? Looks like they just did a lot of driving (after sleeping until the 11AM checkout time, of course).
Anyone familiar with Salt Lake City know which buildings have granite globes in the lobby? And which would have "meetings" on Sundays/Mondays?

Jim Bob,

Yes, you would be correct. Unless the studio or production company foots the bill with a guarantee from a network, most investors create the programming with the hope of getting it picked up.

Think of a kid making a low budget movie with his mommy and daddy's money. He will take that to various festivals and hope that a studio will pay him to pick up his film. In TV, you could produce a 30 minute "infomercial" and make it look like a tv show. You'd buy a block of late night on TLC or something and sell the extra ad space during the show. If the ratings are good you could get somebody to professionally produce your show and let somebody else assume the risks of production.
