I can absolutely endorse this from my brother's experience of visiting friends there - Australia is notoriously tough when it comes to immigration.
Their current prime minister John Howard gets repeatedly re-elected on a platform of cracking down on illegal immigrants and potential terrorists, so from that aspect it's one of the worst countries Casey could have "emigrated" to.

They don't ask for all that stuff (they can) but don't normally.

I will stand corrected if this is so. I am suprised things have lightened up since 9/11. My last trip was a few years before that. I had no problem getting in but they made it clear I had to leave before my visa expired.
One thing I know has not changed: God help you if you are there AFTER your visa expires. You are going to jail and then you are deported.

When you apply for an ETA, you either do it as a tourist ETA, or as a business ETA. Business ETA is what you come in on for something like a trade show, or fact finding mission , etc. Both are electronic, and more or less automatic based on your name/passport being clear in their system.
Either ETA is 90 days. It can be extended electronically while still in Australia, (online form). The fee for this is about $200AUD.
Either version of the ETA specifically dissallows you from working for an Australian company. Which won't hire you without a tax file # (SSN).
Actual work visa are difficult to obtain and it is a bit of a process for "independent " executives, and no way he would qualify. (I have been through the process)
Anyhow, as much as I am a hater, until he overstays his visa here, there really isn't anything that he is doing wrong.
Yes, we have immigration detention centres in the desert. But we save those for real refuges found floating in the sea. Americans and Canadians get kicked out, and not allowed back when they leave. No one really looks for visa overstayers..there are like 50,000 visa overstayers "missing"

The politest interpretation is that he was gullible in the extreme - but I don't for one second believe that he wasn't entirely aware of what he was doing and the possible legal ramifications. But, as with literally everything else he's done, he thought he was untouchable.

Tavington, I'm genuinely fascinated by your posts. I'm assuming you haven't yet delved into the full gory details of Casey's activities over the past few months, because I simply cannot see how anyone familiar with even a fraction of what he's got up to can show him any sympathy at all.

Australian immigration has a hotline for dobbing in people who are here illegally, which I phoned about twelve hours ago. I spent about an hour talking to two different people, providing them with relevant URLs and any other information I thought might aid in nailing snowflake to the wall. That was, of course, before I heard the interview with Declan.
It's becoming increasingly clear that Serin did not intend for anybody to know he was heading to Australia. I also believe that he planned this in advance, and wouldn't be surprised if he managed to get some of that coffee tin cash into the country with him.

Loved the Declan interview. Casey sounded very, very down. It had nothing to do with him being up at 5:16 in the morning. I believe he's finally seeing his world blow up. When Declan asked him about not having control of the story anymore, Casey was truly distressed.
And it was great how Marty backtracked a little on how the Haterz may have gotten access to the JV agreement, etc.. Hey Marty, remember that "fresh eyes and experience are good to have!". So maybe you might wish to listen to some of your future potential readers of this upcoming trilogy of trash.
In looking at the JV agreement, I found it hilarious that PageDaddy.com has access to a 'highly targeted list of 25,000 real estate investors'. As for copyright, it's one thing to get close to a "look", but as long as you use different, unique elements, you're okay - you can't trademark or copyright a torn paper effect, or using a vignette of eyes from a classic work of art.
But you can't mimic the title itself - which is why you don't see many "XXX Code" ripoffs.
Add in they used the same background color, and the same general placement of type, and if you put the hack 'book" next to a copy of The Davinci Code, it's obvious that they are trying to use the fame of Brown's book to sell their own crap.
They are CLEARLY infringing upon the IP of Dan Brown, the publishing company, the movie company, and anyone who owns or has licensed legit merchandising rights. They are diluting a brand.
Put it this way: I can't get a band, call them Pistols and Petunias, and draw a cross with Jack O Lanterns in the same configuration as Guns N Roses Appetite For Destruction cover. I think Casey's book will sell relatively well (maybe not top 10 bestseller's list--but one never knows) because of the clever marketing technique being used to promote it.

If the time were to come when he had a paid-off house, two nice cars, retirement fund and medical coverage, only then COULD you say he was 'self-made'. However, even then you would be wrong because Casey has relied on charity and donations throughout this IAFF fiasco. The Begathon, the subsidized living at his sister-in-laws, the 'sponsor me' links, and even the free airplane ticket and housing he has now down under.
Tavington, while I will agree that someone will buy the book, I'm a little lost on how his story will sell 'relatively well'. What clever marketing techniques are being used to promote the book? Internet marketing? I'm not that internet saavy regarding the marketing of books, but please name 5 books that sold 'relative well' off of internet marketing. Don't be reaching into the mainstream bookstores with websites, cause Casey's book won't be there. First one of course is 'Chicken Soup for the Soul'. I can't think of anything past that.
You're right too that Casey is a self-made man. Not one that I would hold up as a role model, but that's just me. Inspirational story? How so? He's done nothing to inspire me other than spend a lot of time reading his story and other's take of it, online.

Wake up to this fact, please. How many people REALLY will buy an E-book? It's the smallest segment of the publishing industry and the majority of readers don't have PDAs to read these things on. You can go to a Borders and buy a Sony E-Book reader, but really now...the average person won't buy an e-book (except the 100 or so Casey supporterz).
They could do an audio book as that segment is growing BUT who wants to listen to Casey drone on and on?
This book seems to be folly in my opinion. Face it, the kid LOST and has written over and over on his blog how naive he is. The average person will never relate to a kid wasting 2.2 mil to get rich quick AND NEVER BECAME RICH.

Someone needs to edit out all the editorial parenthetical discriptors in the transcript of the Declan interview.
Things like "(sounds like he's about to cry)", "(half-realizing his mistake)" and "(grinding his teeth and sounding agonized)" are interpretations that betray the bias of the transcriber and give credibility to Casey's claim that people are spinning the truth to make him look bad.
The directly transcribed conversation speaks for itself (Casey and Marty hang themselves). There's no need to "interpret" the interview for the reader.
By the way, a transciber can't witness someone "(rolling eyes)" while listening to an audio file.

I may be wrong but I always understood e-book to refer to any sort of downloadable book regardless of format (Word, Adobe, etc.) Does it only refer to formats made for proprietary hardware?
Re - Aussie visas
Casey is still an Uzbek national travelling on an Uzbek passport isn't he? The rules might be different than for US/EU travellers.
BTW, almost all countries require travellers to have 1) onward ticket and 2) proof of funds, it's not an Aussie thing. However, enforcement varies tremendously from country to country and even from one port of entry within a country to another. It could even depend on the mood of the customs official or the appearance of the traveller. In my experience, it's something they may pull out if a traveller looks questionable but otherwise not.

State of mind is irrelevant for the crime of mortgage fraud-- i.e. it doesn't matter if Casey thought it was right or wrong or that everyone else was doing it or that a guru told him so or whatever. You do it, you've committed a crime.
PS -- I think the rules in general are that foreign visitors have an onward ticket, it need not be a return ticket to their home country. As long as they know you have plans to leave their country they don't care if you go back to your country of origin or just go elsewhere, as long as you're someone else's problem.

Most countries require an onward ticket for tourists, but checking is very variable. Usually such checks tend to focus in on those who are believed to be most likely to overstay their welcome, work illegally, commit crimes etc.
In practice, in the western world, it means that people with dark skin and/or from "developing nations" tend to get a lot of scrutiny. Those from other industrialized nations tend not to be checked unless they do or say something really stupid. I've never had anybody check my tickets in Australia.
