Sneaky Sneaky Apple

Classic "Bait'n'Switch" but the good kind.

iPhone Delivers...

CUPERTINO, California—June 18, 2007—Apple® today announced that iPhone™ will deliver significantly longer battery life when it ships on June 29 than was originally estimated when iPhone was unveiled in January. iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.* In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time. Apple also announced that the entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity.

Sad to say, I want one and I am well on my way to convincing myself that I need one.

Rob Dawg,

Me too. That's just like the gadget to end all gadgets

Lots of talk about purchase price but nobody sez anything about monthly fees/services. Forget whether it's "needed" as us Guyz can always find a completely logical argument to justify buying it.

How mucha month? anyone?

I want dvdPedia and not just because it sounds like Caseypedia. That way when you stumble across a DVD in the tore on sale you can wave the barcode in front of your iPhone builtin camera and have it tell you whether you have it.

This is such a great product now even better that I expect a massive sell off at the introduction.

I'm constantly told I gotta get a cell phone one of these days, but I hate the idea of being so damned available. It's nice to get into the car or go to a store or take a walk and know you are absolutely out of reach of other goddam people. iPhone is a cool toy, though. It reminds me of those tiny radio-controlled helicopters. Fascinating in the store, but a moment's thought makes you say "nah".

word on the street is that it's around 60 bucks per month

"Pricing and Availability
iPhone will be available in the US on June 29, 2007 in a 4GB model for $499 (US) and an 8GB model for $599 (US)"

Ouch...

so tempting, but add in the early termination fee of the cell contract i signed with sprint last month, and it's priced way out of my budget.

sure is nice though.

Not a "needed expense," but I will buy one anyway. Will require a data plan and probably double my monthly bill, though. I hope the data plan includes the ability to tether a laptop at no extra charge.

I won't be at the AT&T store on the 29th, though. I'm hoping the online order page holds up once they open the floodgates.

60 bucks a month?

Oh. Forget that then

The deal killer for me is AT&T - I refuse to do business with them ever again. I don't care if it's free, I won't use them.

I was SOOOO pissed when I found out Verizon passed on it.

It's very cool technology, and it's exactly what i want to tie all my address books and stuff together, but until they offer another carrier, no deal.

Plus, NEVER buy version 1.0 of anything. Wait until 1.1 ships, then buy, is my experience with Apple.

Plus, the real goodies are coming with Jaguar in October. I can wait. I know other carriers will get it, eventually.

The optical glass surface is good...very good...

I was upset when I heard Verizon passed too, and I'm no fan of AT&T. However, if you want to wait be prepared for a long wait. AT&T has a five year exclusive deal with Apple.

Personally I'm so POed with the various mobile phones I've tried I'm going to go with Apple and AT&T, even with version 1.0. I figure most of the iPhone is software so any bugs can be ironed out with firmware upgrades. AT&T and Edge sucks when compared to Verizon and EVDO, but my Verizon phone crashes so much I'll probably get more done with the slower speeds.

I do expect to be upgrading within a year though. Apple will announce a newer model with higher bandwidth fairly quickly I'm guessing.

$500 to buy and a $60 a month service plan with a crappy provider is a pretty steep price to pay. It looks cool but I definitely won't be buying. I can't see how that many people will be interested enough to make this anywhere near a blockbuster.

Then again, I said the same thing about the iPod so what the hell do I know?

Rob Dawg said...

I wouldn't sweat the 5 year. What's to stop APPL from rolling out iPhone 2.0 while honoring the letter of 5 years exclusive iPhone 1.0 with T? Heck, Apple has this funny stuff called cash. What if they buy a troubled wireless carrier?

This whole information convergence paradigm has got to be killing Gates.

Mouse And Pencil said...

I know about the 5 year exclusive, we'll see how exclusive it is. I been hearing things...

Anyway, I've got some companies I simply will not give a dime to - Earthlink, Pacific Bell, and AT&T are a couple of the biggies - been there, went through hell, won't go there again. (PacBell DSL is story that would make most grown men cry, it went on for almost a year, I've never been that frustrated, outraged, insulted, and convinced they have a policy to hire every malcontent, ignorant, incompetent person in the state of CA. Earthlink runs a close second - 6 fucking months to get them to release an IP. Weekly phone calls to the subcontinent of India, multiple notes on my account, escalated calls...)

(Let it go, ohm...ohm....ohm...)

I have a low tolerance for incompetence and shoddy customer service these days, I've had too much of my time wasted.

Comcast is about to make the list: my cable modem, when it works, is great. But the last two summers, it would go out for an hour, up to 24 hours, a couple of times a week. Only in the summer. All winter, it's rock solid - as soon as it gets above 90, it goes squirrely. This morning, it was out from 5:30 to about 7:10. Yes, i'm keeping a record this year. I've tried calling in, I get India, who told me they don't even have any way of checking the network, now sir, if you'd go to your Start Menu, and click on... I have a Mac....Please Sir, if you'll click on your Start Menu...sigh...

Sigh. I can't seem to find the magic phone number to talk to someone who can tell me why it's down so much, and what can be done to fix it.

I'm giving myself another month. If it's the same as last year, Comcast is fired and I'll get a wireless card through Verizon for my laptop.

DirectTV, Verizon, and Citibank, I have no problems with, had nothing but great service and customer support. I just don't do anything in the Verison stores, they WILL fuck it up.

I'd fire PG&E if I could, hate their guts with a passion.

Life is too short. Fuck 'em - and I don't give them my money. I'd rather do without.

I guess no iPhone for me. I'll live. I hate the phone anyway - I'd turn my cell phone off all the time, but i leave it on for emergency calls. I havent had a land line in over 4 years, and don't miss it at all, I have no need for one.

I cringed when I clicked on this Apple link and read this:

Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications.

Jesus, everytime somebody says award-winning I want to scream.

I'll just get one of my convergence cells from Virgin Mobile prepaid with a camera phone and music player for 100 bucks or so and see how that goes.

Just a note about AT&T's service. I have a friend who works at one of their call centers. She tells me that what they stress to their employees is to get people through the system as quickly as possible. They don't care about being kind, patient, helpful or competent, only that their calls should last 7 mins or less. No lie, they want to be done with you as quickly as possible and don't really care about resolving your issues. It's definitely something to consider. This is coming from on of their employees who knows the system. My friend is always getting in trouble for taking too long on her calls although her satisfaction from customers is 100%. They don't care how well she treats people only that she get done with them quickly. The higher-ups don't give a shit about customer service, so when your phone has a problem you're basically fucked unless you get one of the few people who actually cares.

I know what you mean!

Apple's awards are actually genuine - their designer Jonathan Ive must have picked up pretty much every heavyweight design award going over the past ten years - but the term has been so debased of late (and not just by Nigel) that it's hard to take seriously.

This is mostly speculation on my part, but if I had to guess, I'd say that Verizon passed on the iPhone because Apple wouldn't let them fuck with the OS. I like Verizon's coverage, plans, and customer service, but I cannot figure out why they insist on screwing with the OS of every phone they sell. I have a Razr from Verizon that has a different OS than every other Razr that Motorola ships. It has features disabled that make it absolutely infuriating to own (most notably, the ability to download pictures from the phone using USB without buying the Verizon data transfer utility).

I bet Verizon told Apple to change some stuff in the iPhone OS so that Verizon could sell some more add-on accessories, and Apple told them to pound sand. Nothing like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

The Chinese knockoff is half the price and comes with better features. I can just put my SIM card into it and not bother with a retailer. My last few phones have came from China and I've been very pleased.

I currently use a Moto L7 modded out and reflashed with more features than any retailer offers. See motomodders.net for examples.

The knockoff I-phone is probably better quality too. AAPL has had all kinds of quality issues lately.

I won't be getting it anytime soon, if ever. Sigh. Anyone know a good solid cell phone that works on Verizon and is WITHOUT a camera.

I work for one of the large defense contractors and company policy is NO cell phones with cameras on company property.

And, yes, at random intervals, all cell phones coming in are checked for cameras.
