All Election All the Time

As we draw so very close the Presidential election the only responsible thing to do switch to full time coverage of the process. Not. I'm a very involved politcal type and I'm sorry but a 2 year election cycle is destructive to the process. All this serves is to train a monkey to dance to the MSM tune. Not that there isn't relevant news. 9 of the 10 Rs oppose the immigration bill. Ron Paul won majorities in 3 of the 4 polls (vote.com, cnn, msnbc) but Fox put him in 2nd with only 24%. None of the pundits thought Paul was worth mentioning. On the D side it is equally interesting that they seem to be running for the position of "not the republican." And California is only 8 months away. No thanks, good candidates do not equate to good Presidents. Talk to me in November. The media love controlled stories; when, how long, ability to creatively edit, closed polls. They'll cover the campaigns unil we are sick of it. Voter fatigue is a goal for them. This is also why they are so lame in following the housing bubble. It is a story out of their control that won't unfold on their schedule. News in a cn now with 30% less content.

Anon,
Use a handle and read more carefully. The image says Libertarian, that's part of the joke. And there was no discussion of the candidates only how they are being spun in the media. Perhaps you meant?: "Ron Paul? Treated fairly in the media? HA! Puh-leeeeaaze."

I am a third generation Republican. I am going to vote Democratic in the coming National Election on general principle. Ron Paul is the only candidate that might get me to change my mind. As long as the Republicans are sucking up to the social conservatives at the expense of America, they need to be rejected.

A 2 year election cycle is ridiculous. Interestingly though, I think that this is to the detriment of the early front-runners. By the time January rolls around, "Clinton fatigue" will return to the American lexicon.

Which gives me some hope that the best qualified candidate (clearly Bill Richardson) rather than the top fundraiser or best campaigner has a shot (albeit a long one) at being elected president.

Although I'm probably being overly optimistic in that respect...

Casey brings more posts because
(1) Its easy to be snarky
(2) We have a reasonably unified position on him so posting on him is both safe and funny.

These other subjects are complex subjects where people have mixed emotions and the subjects are more important. People are less likely to post something they 66% agree with but don't have a better answer, than a snarky Nigel comment.

Ron Paul's history as a supporter of white supremacist groups and his alignment with far-right "Survivalist" groups in the 1990s is more than enough reason to drop him from any serious consideration for President.

Anonymous said...

I was a Ron Paul supporter until I found out he is anti-choice/pro-life. I find it hard to back a republican/libertarian that takes that stance. That rather hot button issue aside, he does make some wonderful points. Especially his views on the Fair Tax.

R-Boy said...

Sprez,

Where? I've not heard a peep out of that anywhere. He had a newsletter thing but that was way overblown, wikipedia summarizes it well enough.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_paul#Alleged_racial_remarks

In an April 2007 column on his official House of Representatives website,[65] Paul criticizes racism, saying:

"Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called "diversity" actually perpetuate racism. Their obsession with racial group identity is inherently racist."[65]

All of the other GOP candidates support of fundy's, their concentration on spreading fear as a tool to win elections, and their reality impaired world views; are more than enough reason to drop them from any serious consideration for president

R-Boy said...

I dont agree with Paul on the abortion issue either, but I do give him credit for being very consistent throughout the years (He is also anti-death penalty).

Bill Richardson is far from well-qualified, and he's looked like a total noob as of late on the media circuit and in the news. Stick a fork in him.

Didn't realize about the death-penalty, R-boy you're right at least that does show some consistency in his views. As for how the media is treating RP, I rarely hear anything about him outside of the blogsphere. Maybe a product of my location, Urban NC. I'm also waiting to hear what Fred Thompson will do, granted I'm too young to remember his work during the Nixon years, but I have agreed with some of his "talking points" at speeches dealing with the death of individuality and the rule of law.

R-Boy said...

No problemo LuluBear. I've followed Ron Paul for years and I'd like to think I know somewhat where he stands, which is why Sprezz's comments alluding to racism are really suprising.

Ron's a very interesting fellow. His deal with the Repubs is hilarious. The folks in his district love him, he gets re-elected either without opposition or by exceptionally wide margins

I don't hold out much hope for any mainstream candidates. Too much money in politics these days. Too short a time horizon to be held responsible.

Sprezzatura said...

In 1996, Ron Paul was one of only two candidates endorsed by Christian Identity leader Larry Pratt (who had previously worked with David Duke, and resigned from Pat Buchanan's team when his Identity role became public). Paul refused to repudiate the endorsement.

David Duke is also an ardent Ron Paul supporter.

Now, one could say that judging a candidate by his supporters is not fair. However, when people who embody far-right, racist and antisemitic hate groups endorse you, it's generally a prudent move to step up and disavow the support lest you be seen as welcoming it.

Paul has not done so.

R-Boy said...

I don't think that's very fair Sprezz, considering Paul's public statements.

I judge folks by their walk and their talk, not by who walks behind them

Anonymous said...

Your vote for president for the coming four years should be looked at more as a vote for two supreme court justices for the next twenty.

Hey look I'm anonymous again.

R-Boy said...

I mean, seriously, that's like judging Steve Serin because he won't disown his brother despite his brother's actions.

If you want to claim RP as racist, you're going to have to provide evidence from his actual behavior.

Often times I see fringe groups endorse candidates. Most of the time, they're so minor that the candidate in question just ignores them.

You can't judge a book by looking at a couple of people who bought it. And Ron Paul going out of his way to denounce David Duke just gives Duke attention he neither deserves or would have otherwise. If it weren't for people bringing him up all the time as a convenient boogeyman to protest against, Duke would have disappeared from the political landscape nearly 15 years ago.

Ron Paul was interesting in his day when he was in the 1992 race as a Libertarian. Back then his ideas would have worked well but now I don't think so. I might get to meet him on the 13th at the Colbert Report. I saw his monday appearance on the Daily Show and found him to be charming and intelligent but his views may be too limiting to fix the mess we are in and dare I say it...a bit simplistic. Although the part about following the constitution has appeal, since we have all but abandoned it over the last 5 years.

If anyone has an interesting question to fire at him I would be interested.

Oh, and even better: a full transcript of a 2004 Ron Paul interview. Here's an excerpt:

First question: do you believe there are secret forces at work that are attempting to dismantle the Constitution and the Bill of Rights?

Congressman Ron Paul - I don't know what the best word is, but secret is pretty good. They're certainly not known to a lot of people; it's actually what their doing. But then again, it's not absolute secrecy. If you look around you can usually get the information. There was a time when nobody even knew who was a member of the CFR or the Trilateral Commission. I think it's a bad sign that they're not as secret as they used to be. They're bolder now. But there is an agenda.

Sorry, but anybody who seriously believes that the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission are part of a secret conspiracy to undermine the US Constitution is a few cards short of a deck.

Sprezzatura said...

R-Boy: With all due respect, that's bogus. And it's certianly not "straight talk". It's more like weasel words.

The newsletter went out under his name. If he didn't read the copy first, he should have. He owns the words in it -- either because he wrote them, or he bought and paid for them to be written for his own purposes. To claim that he's somehow not responsible for what went out in an 8-page newsletter entited "The Ron Paul Political Report" is like a politician saying, "That thing I said? I don't really believe it -- it's just something my speechwriter cooked up."

I'd respect him more if he came right out and said,, 'Yes, that was in my newsletter, but I went too far in my arguments and I feel really bad about it now". That would be straight talk. But to say "gee, that wasn't me, I blame my staff" is like Casey Serin blaming his problems on the banks who loaned him the money to buy his houses.

FMW,

Sprezzatura said...

To follow up -- I can understand why people like Ron Paul. Americans love candidates who will discard the usual political rhetoric and 'tell it like it is". We're so used to the false language of politicians that if someone comes along and talks like a human being, he's going to stand out just for that reason alone.

However, you have to listen not only to how things are said, but also to the substance. If you find yourself saying, "gee, I don't really agree with Paul's view on X, and Y, but gosh, he's such a straight talker then I'm going to support him anyway" then that should be a big warning sign to you. Elections have consequences, and where people stand on issues matters deeply.

In the interests of full disclosure, I should say that I am a center-left Democrat, but I have also voted for some Republicans in my time. I do my best to judge candidates on their positions and their worldview fairly. There are Republicans I could vote for. Ron Paul is just not one of them.

Rob Dawg said...

I wasn't going to talk politics but rather the business of politics but thread drift happens so...

Right now Hilly owns the process. If no clear frontrunner emerges on the D side she and King Bill will cash in their favors. Does Richardson balance the ticket? Hilly on top (don't go there) locks CA, NY, IL and most of the rest of BosWash for a huge electoral advantage. Across the aisle Romney or McCain nominations could put California in play. Understand no D can get elected without CA and if they have to fight for CA rather than just hit us up for campaign money they are bound to lose several battleground states in the process. Obama does not have the experience to win over the middle ground. He might be popular with the Ds who are paying attention now but he cannot make inroads in the middle ground. R Paul has the same issue and the uncomfortable prospect to some of a weak Presidency.

Romney/Paul or Guli/Paul are balanced tickets. Put actor Thompson in any of those combinations as well. Back on the Ds right now anyone except Richardson garnering the nom is going to end up like McGovern in the gen.

Nigel gets Sweet Media in USA Today!!! (Cited at Housing Bubble Blog)

"Others, like Nigel Swaby, a 36-year-old mortgage broker in Salt Lake City, are reluctant stock investors. Fearing the prices on two investment properties he owned in Salt Lake City could decline, he sold them in 2005 and invested the money in stocks.

Swaby wants to get back into real estate and has been hunting for homes to buy, but feels prices are still too inflated. "There aren't a ton of deals out there," he says. So his money sits in a high-yield savings account, a diversified stock mutual fund and four stocks: Procter & Gamble, Nortel Networks, Revlon and United Airlines. "I want a higher rate of return than a savings account, and stocks are it, until the real estate opportunity presents itself."

Uh, Nigel, I thought that it was a great time to buy real estate in Salt Lake. You were selling two years ago?

Yes dipshit, you are describing inflation. Just like the McDonald's hamburger, property increases in nominal value over time, but depreciates in real terms. Which is what everyone with an IQ above room temperature understands about real estate and doesn't need your 8th grade student explanation to explain it. Also, everyone who understands basic economics either got out of the housing market earlier this decade or was not dependent on a historically implausible pricing bubble to continue indefinitely.

Idiot.

Nigel; he's priceless. Hamburgers. You can't make this shit up. ::sigh::

The hamburger pricing crisis may cause us to go to war with Argentina so we can tap into their beef reserves.

Hillary is to polarizing to be a successful president. I can see the Dems electing her to get back at the GOP and because her hardball playing prevents any other Dem from being the alternate.

I am hoping for Obama (not because he is good, but because he is not bad and is not polarizing) I would really like Gore, but I don't think it is realistic at this point

@Lurker
I'm with you on that one. I'm still on teh fence about Obama, but I think b/w him & Billary, I think it's the lesser of two (fairly) evils. I like Gore too--but he seems determined not to run.

I would love to see a female prez, but not Hillary. I'm thinking more of a Stephanie J type, who would go over and kick Congress in the balls if they were pissing her off. (Realistically, it would probably only be possible to kick the Senate in the balls. The House could take up to a week to rack properly.)

Rob,

As you may know my BiL studies demographics of the nation pretty darn closely. He sees demographics as destiny his analysis points toward a "D" populace in tghe SW. As for CA, I don't think Romney has a chance. Aahnoold is about as far right as they will go now.

As for working for the 55 you may be right, I have seen stranger things.

Romney is Satan. Don't let that Ken-doll look fool you.

Stpehanie - if you vote for Obamamamma, I would seriously have to reconsider us....

Ahhhhh who am I kidding... I Wish I Could Quit You!!!™

Whoa now, Gore? Are you not aware that Gore and the entire global warming MYTH is a front for communism? (This has been proven by Smithosity at SDCIA, who is afraid Gore will make him install double paned windows on his rental properties.)

Miranda Mayer said...

Nah. I'll wait a few more months before I decide.

I may just vote for that guy who talks to himself behind the 7/11. I think his platform of garbage-rummaging and public urination is extremely creditable.

Hey Rob,

Are you in Dornan's old district?

Rob Dawg said...

Metro,
I a great many things I also depend on demographics to shape my opininos of the future. When working to get locals elected i do some wierd sh!t.

Indeed urban voting patterns in the Soutwest and West are blue but they are also not as important in getting votes at the polls so it is still far more competetive than the demographics and registration would indicate. The SW and W also have very low loyalty. Thus Da Governator as you note. Now, ask yourself. A reverese carpetbagging Mormon Republican winning the MA governorship? And that is more likely than him winning CA?

Rob Dawg said...

You mean the fake Mexigals new district? NFW. I'm in a red county sir and don't you forget it. ;-)

Liberals to the left, Liberals to the right Ventura County 0.8% Republican and on the coast. The last bastion. Well okay, the SLO anf SD counties as well.

Romney when questioned said...

Q: What do you dislike most about America?

A: Gosh. I love America. I'm afraid I'm going to be at a loss for words because America for me is not just our rolling mountains and hills and streams and great cities. It's the American people. And the American people are the greatest people in the world. What makes America the greatest nation in the world is the heart of the American people: hardworking, innovative, risk-taking, God- loving, family-oriented American people. It's that optimism we thank Ronald Reagan for. Thank you, Mrs. Reagan, for opening up this place in his memory for us. It is that optimism about this great people that makes this the greatest nation on earth.
---------------------------------

I am afraid he might just be too whitebread. I bet he is a nice guy
but I don't believe that there is nothing he hates about America.

The winner of the presidency is 99% moot unless a non-DLC dem candidate wins and manages to dodge a flurry of knives in the back.

Stephanie J must be in rehab. Her comments are only half Casey now. But her views are still "blond"! Looks like the dawgs keep you around for a lil T&A. But they've only seen the T, where is the A?
We, that think that some of you are morons are not Nigel or trolling. We are just tired of the Casey rhetoric.

OMG wants me.

My posts have *always* been less than half-Casey; the other half have been about ME... Being a shameless non-blone attention whore. But fear not... If I ever do show my A.. you can kiss it, darling.
