Illegal Housing Units

Moorpark man arrested after flames consume his home

A 49-year-old Moorpark man was arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail Tuesday night on suspicion of setting a fire in his home....
The converted garage was attached to a home, which contained two additional housing units. At the time of the fire, a family with two young children were in one of the units. No one was home in the third unit.

No injuries were reported and firefighters stopped the flames from spreading to the house, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Nothing like illegal units to put people and property and emergency personell in danger. Meant to post this one but vacation and such distracted me. Let's talk about the housing aspect here please.

There we go got my game back !

Now did he set this fire to grill some hot dogs to keep his family fed ?

Could all this just be a big misunderstanding?

I start fires at home all the time -- I started one this morning to make scrambled eggs, and I've even had a steady fire going for a few hours at a time in the form of a candle...

What was this, a botched insurance scam...?

Richard Bergeron, 49, and his caretaker were in the garage at the time of the fire, and arson investigators said they believe Bergeron intentionally set the fire while his caretaker was in an adjacent bathroom.
Seems like attempted murder.

No mention of the units (or garage conversion) being illegal?

That joins my question of whether people ever get inspections done when they make changes or remodels to their homes. I am not talking about additions that will come up at the time of a sale but bathroom and kitchen remodels or basement finishing. I have not met anybody yet that actually got permits for that type of stuff.....

Anonymous said...

If the California inspectors find a addition that was built with no permits, they can make you take it down. But most likely you pay fines and leave it up...then taxes on the addtl rooms.

The Dude said...

my....how can I call this....gray area IT skillz[tm] use.

....and that's why all your FIRSTS are tainted.

Back on topic: While the story doesn't go into permits and such, there's little doubt the garage conversion and living conditions weren't up to code. What gets me is the $500k bail! That's pretty damn steep for arson. Something is causing bail to be set that high....wonder what?

Anonymous said...

Not uncommon. In my 'hood there is a landscaper that houses 10 of his "employees" in his garage. The garage has not been converted, just has sleeping bags everywhere.

Rob Dawg said...

A few illegal rooms, children, substandard conditions, attempted murder. What's all the fuss? These people just want a better life, a few health and safety laws shouldn't be an issue. Why should the government have any say in this at all? A hundred and fifty years ago we didn't have planning and we built a great nation. Shouldn't those same rules apply to modern living conditions?

Permissive Will? Is that your gay lover?

Well 150 years ago we had this:
Dred Scott v. Sandford,[1] 60 U.S. (19 How.) 393 (1856),[2] also known as the "Dred Scott Case" or "Dred Scott Decision", was a lawsuit, pivotal in the history of the United States, decided by the United States Supreme Court in 1857 that ruled that people of African descent, whether or not they were slaves, could never be citizens of the United States, and that Congress had no authority to prohibit slavery in federal territories. The decision for the court was written by Chief Justice Roger Taney.
That is a sobering decision from the Supreme Court.

Rob Dawg said...

Ha38349,
See? We have to go back to that for the same reasons we have to go back to open borders. Not. Things change and open borders is no longer a rational option. But back on subject. Cities around here have some cases of horrible overcrowding. The costs of this are both in blood and treasure. Unfortunately because of our nonenforcement of existing immigration law there's nothing to do but suffer and pay up.

"A few illegal rooms, children, substandard conditions, attempted murder. What's all the fuss? These people just want a better life, a few health and safety laws shouldn't be an issue."

Crap like this just serves to give the people trying to equate being against illegal immigration with being racist more ammo.

By the way, Rob, while we are discussing the economic and societal burdens we are forced to bear from the illegal immigrant population, let's talk about the 300,000 deaths and $75 BILLION/year that obesity in our country causes. Because let's face it, "those people" are really a drain on the United States. And you, sir, are a fat fucking walrus.

(As a sidenote, drunk driving accidents produce a $114 BILLION/year drain on our economy. Would you like to comment on "those people?")

Idiot.

What crap? We are talking about housing, density and overcrowding and illegal housing units? You are the racist for seeing race where there is none. I even deleted the name so that no one could even make assumptions about race. There is a whole blog dedicated to to your other questions/comments. More your style anyway. More people are in danger from ignorance and hate than obesity yet I don't see you doing anything to address your problems in those areas. Move along you small hateful person.

Yes, it is much easier to provide "witty" commentary on others when you cover your eyes as you pass by the mirror.

"What crap? We are talking about housing, density and overcrowding and illegal housing units? You are the racist for seeing race where there is none."

Give me a fucking break. The last week of threads have been full of commentary on illegal mexican immigrants, including a hilarious "mexifornia" image that was sure chuckle inducing. So chuckle inducing that you quickly closed the thread to comments.

You can tell me to move along.

I'll tell you to go fuck yourself.

I admire you for hanging around and taking the abuse. You've talked a lot of shit for quite some time here - are we to believe that we will actually see some results for all of your recent talk about Casey and Marty? Cause to date it looks empty trash talk. I'm a dyed in the wool HATERZ lest you wonder about my motives. My personal motive is to watch this dickbag suffer some consequences for his transgressions.

300,000 deaths per year? I suggest you back up your claim with fact!
171,490 coronary heart disease deaths
39,679 diabetes deaths
53,087 cancer deaths
10,000 cerebrovascular deaths per year.

Doesn't add up to 300,000..

And where are you getting the cost.??
Just a nit.. but a big nit. See also.

Anonymous said...

What happened in the claim of 300,000 was that the researchers extrapolated by claiming coronary, diabetes, cancer and cerebrovascular deaths were all due to some form of obesity. Bad study.

What housing aspect?

It's a tragedy all around. Guy is so despondent that he cooks up (pun intended) this scheme. I'm sure it'll be repeated all throughout the country.

But it's an aberration. The bottom one percent of the bottom one percent of the bottom one percent. You're asking why wrestlers are so quick to kill their wives and kids.

Surgeon General being confused? Why am I not surprised? Very political position. In the '40s, the Surgeon General was pushing a diet in the military that was destined to create coronaries.. Meat/Potatoes.. no vegies. Very unbalance diet.

ha38349 said...

I wonder what percentage of vegies are picked by illegal labor? Or for that matter how much beef, pork, chicken, etc.. are processed by illegal labor? And what would happen to prices if/when that labor is removed.

Also, if we can discredit Surgeon General testimony because it is political and industry sponsored, I guess we can also ignore the Heritage Foundation links to immigration information?

”I admire you for hanging around and taking the abuse.”

Hey thanks for noticing, although I get paid (quite handsomely) to take abuse each and every day. So if there’s any doubt it doesn’t bother me, consider the former? No hard feelings, truly, its water off my back. (And if you knew me the way some have come to know me, you’d see the truth in that statement.)

”You've talked a lot of shit for quite some time here - are we to believe that we will actually see some results for all of your recent talk about Casey and Marty?”

Ya think? Well it’s more than chit-talk I’ll say, and if I didn’t have the goods on what Casey & Marty are up to? Why would I make claim to that end when yaw’ll know my real name, practice details and so on..? Did I talk shit when calling out Marty for the blowhard he is? Have I ever stated anything here that was refuted by other trusted Haterz? (Oh, ye of little faith -- wink!)

”I'm a dyed in the wool HATERZ lest you wonder about my motives. My personal motive is to watch this dickbag suffer some consequences for his transgressions.”

Naw in reality I don’t question anyone’s motives (other than the idiot Troll-anons), because I understand that every right thinking person whose watched this mess wants to SEE the consequences; not just hear about them in development. So in short you’ve my word, you’re about to witness just that... And hey I may not win everything sought but I’m prepared to scrap and battle hard, which is far more than my opposition has demonstrated to date (irrespective their public bravado). Sure while I may “talk,” I can also walk-the-walk.

KB reported a loss of $148.7 million, or $1.93 per share, for the period ended May 31. A year ago, the company posted net income of $205.4 million, or $2.45 per share.

The latest period included a pretax charge of $308.2 million to reflect the decreased value of unsold homes on its books and for walking away from deposits on land it no longer wants to buy.

"Our second-quarter results reflect the current oversupply of new and resale housing inventory, a difficult situation compounded by aggressive competition and continued weak demand," Chief Executive Jeffrey Mezger said in a statement.

Whew;

this blog is jumpin'!

Man, open up the illegal immigration issue and watch dem threads roll by!

Actually, I'm kinda rethinking outta the box, here.

Maybe these "Open Borders" characters have the thing right...partially.

We invade, conquerand annex the Northern tier states of Mexico.

Seal THAT new border tight,(it isn't as long as the present one), and offer citizenship to the residents.

If they accept, they stay and can freely move aboutthe restof the USA, just like any other gringo schmuck.

If they don't, we deport them to the new "leaner and meaner" Mexico.

The upsides?

We get the oil, we get all the spiffy new factories, and we get a few hundreds of thousands of decent, church-going, hard-working new Americans, (albeit ones with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism, thanks to their Native American heritage...although no-one held that against the Irish, Poles or Russians...much).
And...the beaches.

Okay...the downsides...anyone? anyone?

Can I hear it for neo-Imperialism?

If YOUR population is so mistreatedandfucked-over that it wants to live "here", we'll change our concept of "here" to include YOUR "there".

Permit me a Casey-related interjection here... I came across the following in unrelated reading today and instantly knew it had to be posted here. It's a bit long but highly recommended. Might shed some light on things a bit. Sorry, no link, its quoted from a "dead tree"-style book with real old-fashioned paper pages, referenced below the passage.

*************

"..[He goes] through terribly crippled, like a man who is deaf, or blind, or paralyzed. [For he] has no conscience.

"Conscience doth makes cowards of us all," but conscience is what gives us our humanity, the factor that separates us from the animals. It allows us to love, to feel another's pain, and to grow. Whatever the drawbacks are to being blessed with a conscience, the rewards are essential to living in a world with other human beings.

The individual with no conscience -- with no superego at all -- has long been a focal point for study by psychologists and psychiatrists. The terms used to describe the individual have changed over the years, but the concept has not. Once it was called a "psychopathic personality," and then it became "sociopath." Today, the term in vogue is "antisocial personality."

To live in our world, with thoughts and actions always counter to the flow of your fellowmen, must be an awesome handicap. There are no innate guidelines to follow; the psychopath might well be a visitor from another planet, struggling to mimic the feelings of those he encounters. It is almost impossible to pinpoint when antisocial feelings begin, although most experts agree that the emotional development has been arrested in early childhood -- perhaps as early as three. Usually, the inward turning of emotions results from a need for love or acceptance not filled, from depravation and humiliation. Once the process has begun, that little child will grow tall -- but he will never mature emotionally.

He may experience pleasure only on a physical level, as an excitable "high," and a sense of euphoria from the games he substitutes for real feelings.

He knows what he wants, and because he is not hampered by the guilt feelings or needs of others, he can usually achieve instant gratification. But he can never fill up the lonesome void inside. He is insatiable, always hungry.

The antisocial personality *is* mentally ill, but not in the classic sense or within our legal framework. He is invariably highly intelligent and has long since learned the proper responses, the tricks and techniques that will please those from whom he wants something. He is subtle, calculating, clever, and dangerous. And he is lost."

Eviction Monitor is an online service provided in collaboration with the National Advocacy Group. Eviction Monitor was founded by Ron E. Medley and is an offspring of the mortgage field services he provided in the 1990′s. Operating a field service company allowed Ron to assist lenders, banks, mortgage companies, government agencies, credit unions and leasing companies in resolving delinquent loans.

The chief aim of Eviction Monitor is to provide an Independent Third Party Source to verify that a property owner is not in, or currently facing foreclosure or bankruptcy. This procedure will help a potential, or existing tenant make an informed decision before releasing their “hard earned” money to a landlord. Many states have failed to implement laws to protect tenants against predatory landlords. It is not uncommon for state regulatory agencies to overlook, or abandon complaints concerning consumer fraud. Eviction Monitor is dedicated to empowering consumers from being victimized by unscrupulous business practices and predatory landlords.
