I think that is likely what happened, too. Marty is taking the heat (and deserves it), but I think Casey would have restarted the blog one way or the other in a few days.

That explains what Casey was doing at his parents' house right before his trip. And I'll bet Casey even said to his parents, "Just front the thousand for a week or two, the money will be paid back with $1,000 from ad revenue". And the parents believed him.
Casey made up the story about the Canadian for three reasons.
First, he wouldn't be able to justify using his parent's money for the trip; saying it was a gift from a Canadian somehow validates blowing money in Casey's mind.
Second, he never mentions his parents on the blog. Thus, he can't reveal the real source of the money.
Third, Casey habitually lies, even when the truth sounds better.
If someone knows G's email, tell her to start her own blog telling her story. I am sure there are plenty of people who would support her and pay for donations/advertising.
If G. wanted to be in the spotlight things would have turned out differently along time ago. She constantly hounded CS to keep her out of IAFF blog. Obviously she is caught between a normal desire for privacy and the outrageous situation CS has put her in. I'm not interested in joining the infatuation brigade that congregates here, but I do think she has as good a chance as savekaryn.com at getting all of her debt paid off via donations. But if she did, she'd definitely need help (real help, not Marty-type help). Her site would get very popular fast with the press chomping at the bit for interviews and the new angle on an old story.
